Police: Divorcing couple dead
in murder-suicide
Kathleen A. Curtis filed for divorce in
January. She cited "incompatibility" as the reason she wanted to end
her marriage to Howard L. Curtis Jr.
But he ended it yesterday morning when
he shot and killed her and then killed himself at the North Side home they
shared, police say.
"My stepfather just said he killed
my mother," Jeff Green told a 911 dispatcher at 7:14 a.m. yesterday.
Green, 33, said he was awakened by a
loud popping sound. He told Columbus police that he had been staying over at
his parents' house at 2272 Colfax Ave. on the North Side.
He said that Howard Curtis admitted shooting
his wife and told him to call police, according to a police report.
When officers arrived, they found the
couple wounded in the basement. Both had gunshot wounds to the head, homicide
detective Patricia Dailey said.
Mrs. Curtis, 54, died at 8:16 a.m. at
Ohio State University Medical Center. Mr. Curtis, 58, died at 10:14 a.m. at
Riverside Methodist Hospital.
The couple married on Aug. 30, 1999, in
Bourbon County, Ky. Their divorce case was pending in Franklin County Domestic
Relations Court.
Mrs. Curtis was the city's 99th
homicide victim this year.
