Family    members    shocked    by    shootings

The Easter Sunday deaths of a young military couple, which police are investigating as a murder-suicide, has left family members uncertain about what happened.

The preliminary autopsy report for Marcianna Bennington, 18, indicates that her manner of death was a homicide and that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

The report from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences at Dallas indicates suicide was the manner of the death of her husband, Shannon Bennington, 22. His cause of death also was given as a gunshot wound to the head.

"He is loved and will be missed, and so will Marcianna, and the rest I don't understand, either," said the elder Shannon Bennington, Shannon's father, who lives in Ohio.

Marcianna's mother, Rhoda Forsythe, of North Hampton, N.H., could not believe the speculation about her daughter's death.

"It just doesn't make any sense, nothing makes sense," Forsythe said.

She recalled events and conversations she had recently with Marcianna about the couple's future.

"They had gone out on Thursday and Friday to look at property to purchase," said Forysthe, in tears. "They wanted us to move down there."

Marcianna was a paranoid girl, Forysthe said. She cannot believe that the doors had been left unlocked for Marcianna's friends to enter the dead couple's house, where their bodies were discovered Sunday.

"She was super paranoid," Forsythe said. "She always locked the doors.

NORTH HAMPTON — MarciAnna Yvette Rivera, a 2006 Winnacunnet High School graduate, was killed Easter Sunday in her home in Killeen, Texas, in what police investigators are calling a murder/suicide.

Police believe Shannon Bennington shot Rivera, his wife, in the head and then turned the gun on himself, according to Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith.

The couple lived in Killeen, where MarciAnna, 18, was in the Army and her husband was in the National Guard.

“I don’t believe that he could have done this,” said MarciAnna’s mother, Rhoda Forsythe, of North Hampton. “I love her so much. She was my baby girl. ”

She said the last time she spoke with her daughter was by telephone on April 6.

“She was so happy,” Rhoda said. “They were talking about buying property.”

Rhoda said her daughter was a combat medic in the Army and recently got word she would be going to Iraq.

“She chose the Army field because she wanted to help,” said MarciAnna’s father, Victor Rivera, holding back tears. “She was a good solider, a good person. She was my baby daughter, and I miss her very much.”

MarciAnna graduated from Winnacunnet High School early at age 17 and signed up for the military soon after. Both her parents are in the military, and she was a member of the Winnacunnet ROTC.

“We never encouraged her,” Rhoda said. “She just wanted to serve her country at a time of war. She did everything right. She made all the right decisions. She knew exactly what she wanted and went out and did it.”

Rhoda said her daughter had a smile that would light up the room.

“My daughter was very outgoing,” her father said. “She loved to do things for other people and would do so at the drop of a hat.”

Rhoda said her daughter met her husband while she was at basic training and the couple were recently married on Nov. 13 last year.

“He was an all-American boy,” Rhoda said. “We are horrified. This is just a tragedy.”

Smith said police have no motive and do not know why Shannon Bennington would have allegedly shot his wife.

Neighbors found the couple laying in a pool of blood on the floor of their home on Easter Sunday.

Winnacunnet High School Principal Randy Zito said he was saddened by the news. Zito said MarciAnna stopped by the high school a couple of months ago.

“She just came in to say hello to everyone,” Zito said. “She told us that she was getting ready to be shipped over to Iraq.”

Zito said he received word on Thursday about MarciAnna’s death via an e-mail. She is the sixth Winnacunnet High School student in 49 years to die while serving in the armed forces.

Rhoda said her daughter wanted to become a physical therapist after her she finished her duty in the Army.

“She was only 18 years old,” Victor said. “She was so young and didn’t deserve this.”

Dunning, Robert Keith Dunning

Source:   Portland [Maine] Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram - Dec. 6, 2007

Bob Dunning

BRIDGTON -- Bob Dunning, beloved son, husband, father, and friend, died of a heart attack Friday, Nov. 23, 2007.

Born August 15, 1950, in Western Pennsylvania to Ruth and Daniel Dunning, he attended the University of Pittsburgh where he met the love of his life, Sally. While working in Pittsburgh, he began his career of historic restoration carpentry, which he continued when they moved to Bridgton in 1975.

A master craftsman, he saved, restored, and enhanced many of the historic homes in Bridgton and the surrounding area. Maine Preservation recognized him with the 2000 Statewide Historic Preservation Honor Award for excellence in restoration carpentry and contracting.

One of his greatest joys was sharing his love of old buildings and tools with others; he was a mentor and resource to many in the building trades. He volunteered frequently to demonstrate carving to children at school art festivals. He was a founding member of the Bridgton Historical Society's annual Woodworker's Show. He fascinated visitors at the Scribner's Mill 'Back to the Past' gathering in Harrison. Vice president of the Rufus Porter Museum, Bob had led workshops for their Cultural Heritage series presented each summer. This fall he gave the keynote speech for the Art in Architecture project in Bridgton.

Bob Dunning selflessly served his community. He was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years and an insightful member of the comprehensive plan and recycling committees. When the DOE threatened the Lakes Region with a nuclear waste facility in 1986, Bob was a primary researcher for the Citizens Against Nuclear Trash (CANT). He wrote thoughtful essays for the Earthnotes Series in the Bridgton News, and was a familiar face at selectmen meetings, providing cogent views on many diverse town issues.

Bob was a frequent blood donor and in recent years made regular platelet donations. His final contribution was as a tissue donor.

A life long learner, Bob was a devoted fan of public radio and television. An avid hiker, he had scaled many of the White Mountain's 4,000 foot peaks with his children as companions. He relished the challenges of winter camping and cross-country skiing.

Bob Dunning was a spectacular father to his own two children, who brought him the greatest pride and joy. He was a father of the heart to many others.

A deeply spiritual man, Bob was well attuned to Native American teachings and Eastern philosophies. He was regularly seen performing the graceful moves of tai chi, in keeping with his goal of mindfulness in all situations.

Bob Dunning will be sadly missed by his wife of 33 years, Sally; his daughter and son-in-law, Jessie and Mike Toohey, his son Dan and Dan's sweetheart Caitlin Matthew; his mother, father; and two sisters of Florida, and his brother of Illinois. Bob leaves a host of friends who quite simply adored and respected him.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at 1 p.m., at the First Congregational Church on South High Street in Bridgton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider donations to Maine Preservation, The Appalachian Mountain Club, Bridgton Public Library, Maine Public Broadcasting Network, or your local fire department or hospital.
