Fuhrer, Gene Fuhrer

Grisell Online Obituaries, Clarington, Ohio, dated, September 17, 2007

Fuhrer, Gene, born November 6, 1920 in Clarington, Ohio, died September 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. at his Clarington home. His wife of sixty-three years and his son survives him in his immediate family. His sister Romaine Fuhrer, living in Clarington still survives him as the last member in a family of five siblings, Isla, Charles, and Alma. His interest included his work, wife and of equal importance, his garden. He loved planting produce and flowers. As in his life, his dying was one of courage without fear of death. During World War II, as Chief Pharmacist Mate in the Navy he served this country stationed in the Philippines as a medic.

In private life, he was former owner of the Clarington Grocery until the new Route Seven came through Clarington taking the building. Following, he was employed with Equitable Insurance for Monroe County area. After retirement from Equitable, he became treasurer for Clarington, where he saved the town charter from being dissolved. When the EPA required sewage hookups village wide.

Gene Fuhrer accommodated the people of Clarington with a grant through the EPA and Army Core of Engineers to pay a significant amount of the initial costs for installation followed with regular partial payment for line maintenance. These payments were monthly cost savings for the residence in Clarington on their sewage bill.

As in the service of the nation, where he was rewarded the Purple Heart as a hero for saving lives in the Philippines, he lived an honest and conservative life with beliefs resulting in the preservation of the town of Clarington and the American family ideals.
