Mason Valley News, [Yerington, Nevada]; Friday, 15 Apr 2005
Our
lovely and compassionate Vicki passed on April 3, 2005. Vicki Ann (Rebrook)
Hill loved life, had music in her heart, and warmed those who she touched. We needed her much longer than a meager 62
years.
Vicki
was born to Mary Jane and William E. Rebrook, II, in
Mt. Vernon, OH on March 20, 1943. Her
formative years were in Clarksburg, WV.
Thereafter, much of her life was spent in the Washington, DC suburbs of
Virginia and Maryland where she attended the University of Maryland. She took a break from the DC area in the
early 1970s to live in Scottsdale, AZ, where she became enraptured with the
grandeur of the west. In 1995, she returned
to the west with her husband, Elwood Hill, to reside in the beautiful Carson
Valley. Vicki was a "waterperson" and deeply taken by the enchantment of
her very favorite place, Lake Tahoe.
During
Vicki's career she enjoyed many different jobs, most as legal secretary with
Washington, DC law firms. Her favorite
position was a five-year tour as a legislative assistant with the U.S. House of
Representatives during the period of "Watergate." She also loved adventure which was
highlighted in 1972. She and a friend
traveled much of the U.S. and southern Canada while staying in many YWCA's and
working temp jobs for sustenance. Since
moving to Carson Valley, Vicki has spent her time enjoying the rural
atmosphere, wonderful friends, the lake, and even helping her husband with
research on historic mercury contamination of the Carson River.
Vicki
was preceded in death by her father and a brother, David. She is survived by her husband; stepchildren

and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for

tent meeting being conducted by his father, Earl G. Hissom
Sr., located at the corner of Madison and Randolph Streets, the current
location of Sav-A-Lot and Agsten
Manor. Before joining the Church of the Nazarene in 1945, the Rev. Hissom sold Bibles, held tent meetings, conducted revivals
and preached whenever and wherever he could. He then pastored at Uneeda and Seth. When the Seth church was organized into a
Nazarene Church by District Superintendent Dr. Oney,
he lost his pastorate. Dr. Oney said, "That's
okay, son. Don't be upset. The Church of the Nazarene has lots of places for

Handley, Hooverson Heights, Colliers Way, Capitol
View (now known as South Hills Church of the Nazarene) and the Church of
Emmanuel in Charleston, and Gap Mills. The Rev. Hissom
served as a mentor and encourager for many young, aspiring ministers, such as
John Hancock, Harold Runyon, Carl Gray, James Withrow,
Paul Nester, Tony Costello and many others. During a recent telephone call,
Mrs. John Hancock expressed their deep appreciation for the tremendous amount
of time the Rev. Hissom spent with them in their
early Christian lives. After his retirement from the Nazarene Church, the Rev. Hissom operated a Bible selling business, pastored the Hissom Holiness Tabernacle and the Church of Emmanuel,
Charleston, and Harry Peyton Tabernacle, Hinton. He continued to hold revivals
across the state of West Virginia, preach whenever and wherever he was called
and frequently conducted radio broadcasts. He also worked as a fundraiser
throughout the state for fire and police departments, emergency services and
health clinics through RMJ Studios. The Rev. Hissom
was a renowned Bible scholar. His favorite pastime was studying the Bible,
preparing sermons and discussing the scriptures. His hobbies were walking,
hunting and watching old westerns on TV.

Chief Ronald
Hopper: Former
fireman proven leader
One person who exemplified leadership,
strength and bravery and had a strong command presence on the fire ground was
former San Bernardino Fire Department Battalion Chief Ronald Hopper.
Hopper, former resident of San
Bernardino, died April 13 at his home in Collins, Mo. The cause of death was
colon cancer. He was 65.
"He was a good-natured guy, easy
to talk to. He wasn't intimidating unless he needed to be. On the fire ground,
you knew who the boss was, when he was leading his crew. He was a company man.
He followed the SOP (standard operating procedures). He was a by-the-book guy,'
said colleague Mike Bush of Yucaipa.
Hopper was born on Oct. 12, 1939, in
San Bernardino. He graduated from Colton High School in 1957. He attended San
Bernardino Valley College.
One of his jobs before he joined the
Fire Department was working as a butcher for Stater Bros. He joined the San
Bernardino City Fire Department in 1969 and served there for 26 years. He
married Dorothy Scott in 1969. He retired as a battalion chief in 1995, moving
to Collins, Mo.
"He is probably responsible for
saving quite a few lives. He gave more than he took,' said Bush.
Childhood friend Duncan McGregor of
Rialto said, "He got caught in the middle of the Panorama Fire. He was
driving in a truck coming down the mountains. The fire swept over the truck. He
kept that thing (the truck) running through sheer will.'
In his spare time, his hobbies were
hunting, fishing, attending gun shows and buying, selling and collecting
antique firearms.
"He was always very intelligent.
He loved the outdoors. He was bound in curiosity about everything,' said
McGregor. "He had his own ocean boat. He spent a lot of time out of the
ocean, fishing.'

Diego; stepsons, Jimmy Callahan of Texas, and Danny Callahan of Collins, Mo.; a
stepdaughter Linda Brown of Jarrell, Texas; a brother Gary Hopper of Oceanside;

James L. "Gump" Joseph, 83,
of Madison is now at peace, without pain and sorrow. He can now be with his
loving wife, Beryl, with whom he shared a life for 53 years. His favorite song,
"He Stopped Loving Her Today," is now a reality for his family. Our
father and grandfather passed away of a broken heart on Saturday, May 21, 2005,
at Meadowbrook Assisted Living, Camp Creek.
He was born May 4, 1922, to Bannie and Elmer Joseph of St. Albans.
Coming to Madison in the late 20s, he
and his mother, brother and sister made their home on Miller Hill with Uncle
John. He was raised to be a farm hand but when his country called him to duty
in 1941, he became a soldier. He first served in the U.S. Navy, then enlisted in the Army where he was a sergeant and
platoon leader. He was awarded four Bronze Star Medals, the Good Conduct Medal
and a Purple Heart for his actions in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and
Central Europe. He was a life member of VFW Post 5578, Madison.
He married his childhood sweetheart,
Beryl White, in 1945 and they had two daughters, Beverly and Alice. In the
spring of 1948, he was asked by John Byrnside to help with an opening and
closing of a grave in Boone Memorial Cemetery. He then became caretaker after
J.D. Craddock retired. Then, in 1980, Ira and Judy Handley became his employers
and friends, where he remained loyal and faithful, giving his loving care to
help others with their bereavement for over 63 years.
His life cannot be measured by the
material things, but by the kind deeds he did for others. Our family has surely
been blessed with, not one, but two loving parents. Our father was a kind and
honest man who loved music, a good joke and a game of cards.
He was preceded in death by his wife,
Beryl White Joseph; mother, Bannie Joseph; father,
Elmer Joseph; a brother, Lynard Joseph; and a sister,
Beatrice Perdue.
He leaves behind daughter and their
husbands, Beverly and Teddy Martin of Charleston and Alice and Barry Rider of Haddleton, with whom he made his home for the past year;
granddaughters, Amber Parks of Columbus, Ohio, Tara Parks of Cross Lanes, Kelly
and husband, Ray Bennett, of Foster, Shellia and
husband, Sgt. Jamie Johnson of Jacksonville, N.C., and Natalie and husband,
Adam Brown of Haddleton; great-granddaughters, Lilly
E. Bennett and Shelby Johnson; and one great-grandson, Griffin James Bennett.
