Miller, Daniel Henry Miller

Source: The Harlem [Montana] News; 29 Jul 1992

by Mary O'

For a few minutes last Wednesday I was transfixed back into a period of time belonging to our ancestors who helped settle this country.

The scene I viewed couldn't be happening today!  But it was!

I watched teary-eyed as the beautiful farm wagon rumbled along so naturally in its coat of green paint with red wheels.  The large, beautifully groomed, graceful Belgian horses pulled proudly as they carried their cargo north.  Their manes bounced in time with the hooves clipping on the road with heads held high and steps firm and precise.

This was the final tribute to Dan (Soak) Miller traveling his last miles to Harlem Cemetery.

Wagonmaster Ralph Snider and friend Joe Brown, dressed as real western gentlemen, sat tall and proud on the wagon seat.  The beautiful coffin, topped with flowers, rode majestically in the wagon box.

Outriders were Soak's friends and pallbearers.  Their horses pranced and danced their way along, following the wagon as guardsmen.  The riderless horse, an old western custom, and always a touching scene, accompanied the outriders as they rode the trail with their friends for the last time.  What a wonderful, beautiful, dignified trip for a cowboy or rancher, out here in the west, under the big sky.

*Submitter’s Note: A photo of the horse-drawn wagon carrying the remains of Dan “Soak” Miller to the Harlem Cemetery accompanied this article.
