First
of flood victims
laid to rest
Pallbearers in Cambridge, O.,
delivered the body of Roger E. DeNoon for burial following the flash floods
near Shadyside, O.
Family believes man died
in attempt to help others
CAMBRIDGE, O. -- The body of Roger E.
DeNoon was one of the first to be found after a flood ravaged the Ohio Valley
community of Shadyside last Thursday. Yesterday,
in a silent hillside cemetery here, DeNoon was the first to be buried.
Shortly after a military burial in
Guernsey County Memory Gardens, members of the grieving family said they
weren't sure why the 51-year-old man was taken from them, but they think they
know how he was swept up in the flash flood.
DeNoon, family members said, was
waiting for a ride from his wife, Gloria, and one of their daughters, Kelly
Ann, at a nearby grocery store. He was
walking home from the Shadyside VFW Post, but stopped at the store on his way
home because it had begun raining.
Before Gloria DeNoon and her daughter
could travel the few miles from their Wegee Creek home to the store, DeNoon had
disappeared.
"We think he heard people screaming
down in the creek and went to help them," said Roger DeNoon Jr., one of
DeNoon's two sons. "He wouldn't
have been walking in the rain if he had a ride coming. That valley was full of screaming
people. We know he went down in there to
help someone.
"He's a hero in our book."
DeNoon was a veteran of the Marine
Corps and the Army. He hasn't worked
since 1973, when he fell 2 1/2 stories from a scaffold while installing
aluminum siding on a house in Illinois.
As he fell the siding in his hands struck a live electric line, sending
12,000 volts of electricity through his body.
He suffered severely burned hands and legs and seriously damaged his
back.
"He survived that," Gloria
DeNoon said. "But not this. But it's not in our control. It's God's decision."
Family members spoke proudly of DeNoon
who they say would do anything for anybody.
He was a person who, Roger Jr. said, "would give you the shirt off
his back if you needed it."
Though the family had moved to Shadyside
only eight months ago, they apparently had made a lot of friends. About two dozen people drove the 45 miles to
Cambridge from Shadyside, where private services were held.
The family and others gathered in the
Bauknecht funeral home to pay their respects.
During the service, several small groups of people stood outside,
waiting to lay to rest Edna and John Andrecht, an elderly couple killed by the
torrential waters.
"We want the people of Shadyside
who have family members missing to know they're not alone," said Roger
Jr. "We lost a lot, because we
loved my Dad a lot, but there are others out there who lost everything."
Gloria DeNoon said that since the
accident in 1973, her husband had often been in pain. "But his pain's over now," she
said. "He's with God."*
