Mrs. Freda Ripley Armstrong, 65, of
Jefferson Street, Newell, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1989, at home
after suffering an apparent heart attack.
She was born June 26, 1924, in New
Martinsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late John W. Mercer and Iva Walker
Mercer.
A retired potter, Mrs. Armstrong had
been employed 34 years at the Homer Laughlin China Co. She also retired from Waterford Park after 15
years as a mutuel [sic] clerk. She was a
member of the Sheriff's Advisory Committee, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6450
Auxiliary in Chester and American Legion Post 114 Auxiliary in Newell.
Her husband, Marl D. Armstrong, died in
January 1969.*
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs.
Ronald (Carol) Dunlevy of Ashland, Ky., and Mrs. Charles (Gloria) Richard of
Newell; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Cora) Booher and Mrs. Esta Smith of Newell, and
Mrs. Grace Lockhart and Elaine Rose of East Liverpool; two brothers, Homer J.
Mercer of East Liverpool and Brady G. Mercer of Hallandale, Fla.; six
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are planned at 1:30 p.m.
Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home.
Burial is to be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Ruth Ella Hogue
Baker, 54 of 33224 Railroad Street, Lewisville died early Wednesday morning
January 25, 1989 at the Good Samaritian Hospital, Zanesville. She was born December 16, 1934 in Monroe
County a daughter of Virginia Smith Hogue of Lewisville and the late Roy
Hogue. She was a member of the
Woodsfield Church of Christ.
In addition to
her mother Virginia Smith Hogue, she is survived by her husband, Gary
Baker, Lewisville; four daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Debbie Hogue) Gardner,
Graysville, Mrs. John (Sharon Headley) Huffman, Jerusalem, Mrs. Steven (Jeanie
Thompson) Carpenter, Whipple; Shirley Thompson, Lower Salem; one son, Russell Headley, Woodsfield; three
step-daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Carla Baker) Foraker, Caldwell, Mrs. Mathew (Tawyna Baker)
Singleton, Columbus;16 grandchildren; one brother, James Coy Hogue, Lewisville.
Friends were
received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services will be
held at 1:00 p.m. Friday with Harry Summers officiating. Interment will be in the Friendship Cemetery,
Lewisville, Ohio.

Rev. Wayne* Baker
Rev. W. Wayne Baker, 76, Grace Village,
Winona Lake, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the Grace Village Health Care
Unit. He had been in failing health
three years.
He was born Feb. 23, 1913, near
Ashland, Ohio, to George W. and Grace Jacobs Baker. He was married to Eunice Morrill, who
survives.
A member of the Eagle Creek Grace
Brethren Church, Indianapolis, he moved to Grace Village in 1981 from
Indianapolis.
Rev. Baker was a minister of the Grace
Brethren Church and retired in 1978 from the Third Brethren Church,
Philadelphia, Pa. During his ministry,
he served in churches in Iowa, Pennsylvania, California, Ohio and Maryland.
In addition to his wife, survivors
include two daughters, Mrs. James (Joyce) Renick, Lancaster, Pa., and Miss
Vivian Baker, Polk, Pa.; two sons, Dr. Glenn Baker, Brownsburg, and Dwight
Baker, Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one
brother, Lyle Baker, Nankin, Ohio. One
son, two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Services at 10 a.m. Monday will be in
the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, with the Rev. Paul Woodruff, Indianapolis,
officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood
cemetery.
Friends may call in Titus Funeral Home,
Warsaw, Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., then at the church on
Monday, one hour prior to service time.

Services were held Friday afternoon at
Crawford-Bowers-Brown Funeral Home chapel for Lawrence Andrew Ballard, 68, of
Copperas Cove. Ballard died Dec. 25 at a
Temple hospital.
The Rev. Gary Hocker officiated at the
funeral, and burial followed, at Copperas Cove City Cemetery, with full
military honors.
Ballard was born Aug. 18, 1921 in Sand
Springs, Okla. He was a retired U.S.
Army veteran of 26 years. He belonged to
the Nazarene Church, Good Sam Club, Copperas Cove D.A.V., Copperas Cove VFW
Post 8577, the Friendship International Travel Club, Lone Star Travel Club, and
Hoppin' Sam's Travel Club of Copperas Cove.
Survivors are his wife, Olive Ballard
of Cove; two sons, Dennis L. Ballard of Charleston, S.C., and Paul Edward
Tobalt of LaPorte, Ind.; three daughters, Linda Kay Harper of Burbank, Calif.,
Lynda A. Kittle of Bastrop and Nancy Anne Smolen of Copperas Cove; mother,
Sarah Jane Ballard of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Harrison Streeter Ballard
Jr., of Springfield and James Ballard of Bonner, Kan.; five sisters, Mary
Weaver and Fannie Buttram of Grove Springs, Mo., Lovie Still of Fairgrove, Mo.,
and Lois King and Dorothy Brickey, both of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.

WAKEFIELD - Elizabeth Luter Beasley,
75, died Friday, Jan. 27, in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in
Richmond.
She was born in Isle of Wight County.
She was a member of Wakefield Baptist
Church and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 172, Waverly.
Survivors include her husband, James L.
Beasley; one daughter, Mary B. McGrady of Richmond; one son, Lonnie F. Beasley
of Charlottesville; one sister, Edith Sadler of Springfield; three
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Monday at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Parker Hooper. Burial will
be in Wakefield Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7
to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home

Services for Hazel Berg, 93, were held
Oct. 7, in Palmer-Pickering Chapel with Don Sing officiating. Carol Meyer was organist; and Tina Dennis,

F. Aichley, Earnest Greek, Kenneth Ealy, Ronnie Blankenship, James and Rucker
Arnold. Services were conducted by
Palmer-Pickering Funeral Home.
Hazel Lillian, daughter of Carlos and
Beatrice Kinkade Arnold, was born May 24, 1896 in Dahinda, Illinois and died
Oct. 4, 1989 in Lebanon.
Hazel became a part of the Lebanon
community in 1917. On Jan. 20, 1920 she
was married to Emil Berg. She was
preceded in death by her parents, her husband on May 28, 1968 and two brothers,
Charles Raymond Arnold and Glen Andrew Arnold.
Hazel was very active in many community
affairs and was always helping people.
She was president of PTA of Kapp
School District and was a cook for the Rotary and Lions Clubs when they met at
the old Community Center. She was a
member of the VFW Auxiliary, Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary and was a
50-year* member of the WPFA.
She is survived by two sons, Loyd of
Springfield and Clyde of Hattiesberg, Miss.; two daughters, Bonita Randolph,
Lebanon and Fern Rodgin, Modesto, Ca.; a sister, Jessie Walters, Lebanon; seven
grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Pogue Road, St. Clairsville, died Wednesday in Wheeling Hospital. She was born July 28, 1913 in Clarington, the
daughter of the late Oscar and Fannie Kurtzman.
She was a Methodist.
Surviving are her husband, Roy Beymer;
two sons, Richard of Woodsfield, Chester of Moundsville, W.Va.; two brothers,
Glenn Staib and Paul Staib, both of East Liverpool; four grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren.
Services and burial were held at the
convenience of the family on Friday.

Bledsoe were held April 7, in Colonial Chapel with Lee J. Elam officiating. Music was by Rusty and DeLores Shadel. Burial was in Lebanon Cemetery. Serving as escorts were Gene Smith, Roscoe

Haskel Clyde, son of the late Charles
Marshall and Bertha Ellen Baysinger Bledsoe, was born Jan. 27, 1910 at Long
Lane and died April 5, 1989 in St. John's Regional Health Center.
In September of 1937 he was married to
Gladys Kinkade. He was preceded in death
by a daughter, Judith in February of 1947, and a sister, Hazel. He professed his faith in 1950 and was
baptized by Rev. Leo Kachel at Taylor Avenue Church of God.
Hack enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his wife lived on the farm east of
Lebanon on old highway 66 for 45 years, moving to Lebanon a year ago.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two
sons, Jim and Jerry; and two daughters, Joyce Donald and Joann Myers, all of
Lebanon; a brother, Hershel of Kansas City, Ks.; a sister, Helen Waterman of
Lebanon; and four great-grandchildren.*

wife died about 3 years later, her obituary said she left "seven
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren."

worker.

Born June 26, 1896, in Greene County,
she was the daughter of William and Ellie (Hinebrook) Boyd.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith
Boyd of Linton; two nieces; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
husband Jesse Britton, who died in 1986.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. today
at Switz City Cemetery with Gladys Hayes officiating.
There will be no visitation. Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in
charge of arrangements.

NILES -- Robert Junior Brown, 53, 616
Nebraska Ave., died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday in Warren General Hospital following
a six-month illness.
He was born March 19, 1935, in
Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of Clyde C. and Stella J. Thompson Brown.
He was a resident here for 16 years,
coming from Woodsfield, where he was employed at Woodsfield Ice &
Creamery. He also worked for Nelson's
Tree Service in Canfield before retiring several years ago.
Survivors include his mother in
Graysville, Ohio; four brothers, Donald of Graysville, Ronald of Dayton,
William of Mineral Ridge and Melvin of Ithica, [sic] N.Y.; and four sisters,
Mrs. Mary Bartlett, with whom he lived, Ms. Katherine Brown of Youngstown, Mrs.
Ora Wallace of Warren, and Mrs. Alice Serasch of Warren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at
1 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where residents can call today from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in
Kerr Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by

Joseph Burkhart, 94, of 56888
Temperanceville Highway, Barnesville, died Sunday in Barnesville
Hospital. He was born July 25, 1894 in Temperanceville, a son of the late
Peter and Sara Jeffries Burkhart.
He was a retired coal miner, a Protestant, and a veteran of World War I.
He was also a member of the Barnesville DAV.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clem Burkhart; four sisters, Ida Watson,
Victoria DeLong, Anna Cater, and Emma Gallagher Doudna.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Harper Burkhart; a daughter, Mrs. Homer
(Evelyn) Price of Temperanceville; several nieces and nephews.

Casey, 64, of Sarahsville R.D. 1, died at 5:55 P.M. Saturday (Dec. 20, 1986) at
Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville, following a short illness.
She was born June 6, 1922, in Noble County, a daughter of
the late Ellis and Maude Carpenter Leach. Mrs. Casey was a housewife and a
member of the Bates Hill Church of Christ.
Preceding her in death were her son, Rex, an infant son,
two infant daughters, a brother, sister and grandchild.
She leaves her husband, Charles, whom she married June 23,
1939; a brother, Clinton Leach of West Lafayette; three sisters, Mrs. John
(Nancy) Moore of Coshocton, Mrs. Carl (Edith) Bates of West Lafayette and
Phyllis Leach of Mount Ephraim; three grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

CALDWELL---Charles E. Casey,
71, of Sarahsville R. D. 1, died Monday (Feb. 27, 1989) at Bethesda Hospital,
Zanesville following an lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Noble County, son of the
late Joseph and Clara Casey. He was a retired employee of the former Imperial
Clevite plant in Caldwell and a member of the Caldwell Eagles 2952.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty J. Leach Casey,
in 1987; two sons, including Rex Casey who died in 1977; twin daughters and one
grandson.
Mr. Casey leaves three sisters, Mrs. Neva Bichard of West

Burl Cates, 75, Cisne, the owner of the
former Cates Western Auto in Cisne, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 1989 in
the Flora Care Center in Flora, Ill.
He had been in poor health for some
time.

p.m. Thursday (today) at Cisne Cemetery with Rev. Ed. Endsley officiating. Hosselton Funeral Home of Cisne was in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Cates was born March 17, 1913 in
Cisne, the son of Louis and Chloe (Carins)* Cates.
On Nov. 25, 1935 he married Opal Brown
in Fairfield.
He was the retired owner of the Cates
Western Auto Store in Cisne. He was of
the Baptist Faith and a member of the Cisne Masonic Lodge.

Surviving him are his wife, Opal of
Cisne; one daughter, Judy Mix of Farmer City, Ill. and three granddaughters,
Jill Mix of Quincy, Ill., Jan of Normal, Ill. and Joy Mix of Peoria, Ill.

Paul ‘Pete’ C. Christman, 84, of 205 Roy Street, Woodsfield
died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, 1989 at his home following an extended
illness.
He was born at Woodsfield, Ohio on September 7, 1904 a son
of the late Samuel and Maude Montgomery Christman. He was a member of the
Richfork Church of Christ near Woodsfield, Ohio, and a retired carpenter.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Christman, two
brothers, Ronald “Dick” Christman and William Christman, and one sister, Adda
Masters.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred ‘Midge” Dearth Christman
whom he married on September 7, 1944, and two daughters, Mrs. J.D. (Patricia)
Hupp of Canton, Ohio and Mrs. William H. (Doris) Weddle of Woodsfield, Ohio,
four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home,
Woodsfield where services were held Sunday with Virgil Long officiating. Burial

Route 2 died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 1989, at his parent's home in
Sarahsville.
Mr. Clift was a self-employed truck
driver. He attended Zanesville city
schools and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1981. He was confirmed into the Methodist faith in
December of 1974, and married Shari D. Forshey June 14, 1986.
He was born Dec. 21, 1962, in Marietta
Memorial Hospital. He was the son of
Charles B. and Sandra (Neuhart) Clift.
Surviving are his parents; his wife and
two daughters, Charlie Dee Clift and Cassandra Rose Clift of the home; six
brothers, Darrin B., Keenan C., Charles T., Dwayne F., and Patrick M. Clift,
all of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Anthony R. Clift of Sarahsville; paternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Clift of Sycamore Valley; and his maternal
grandmother, Waive Richardson of Zanesville.
Services were held Wednesday at the
Murphy-McCurdy Funeral Home in Caldwell with the Rev. William Pickenpaugh and
the Rev. Stan Kashuba officiating.

died Tuesday at Greene County General Hospital.
Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Greene County,
he was the son of Floyd J. and Myrtle (Flake) Cox. He retired in 1976 from the Milwaukee
Railroad as a foreman and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Frank Courtney American
Legion Post No. 22, in which he was a life member. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars
in Linton and Brotherhood of Maintenance Away.
Survivors include his wife, Irma J.
(Cunningham) Cox*; three daughters, Carolyn Floradis* of Linton, Terry Robinson
of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Vicki Cox of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Floyd J. Cox*
and Danny Cox*, both of Linton; three sisters, Thelma Henico, Helen Workman and
Wilma Dove, all of Linton, and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and two brothers.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at
Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Linton. Military graveside rites will be conducted by
Frank Courtney American Legion Post No. 22.

KEOSAUQUA -- William W. Garrett, 65, of
Keosauqua died Monday, Nov. 6, 1989, at University Hospitals in Iowa City,
where he suffered a stroke following heart surgery. He was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Oskaloosa, the
son of Arley W. and Thelma Mitchell Garrett.
On May 21, 1948, he was united in marriage with Miladean Bennett at
Montezuma.
He graduated from Oskaloosa High School
in 1941, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and had lived in
Montezuma, Monroe, Corydon, Albia, and in Keosauqua since 1979. He operated Van Buren Body Shop in
Keosauqua. He was a member of
Beer-Barker Post 113 American Legion in Keosauqua, Farm Bureau, and had been
active in Little League baseball in Albia.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Thomas of Adel, Kelly of
Oskaloosa, and Scott of Davenport; two daughters, Dana Shehan of Fort Madison,
and Theresa Major of Goldsboro, N.D.; eight grandchildren; his mother of
Oskaloosa; three brothers, Robert of Carlsbad, N.M., Donald of Des Moines and
Keith of Oskaloosa; and six sisters, Dorothy Hazlett of Kansas City, Mo.,
Arlene Salway of Oskaloosa, Betty Plate of Pella, Margie Black of Oskaloosa, Mary Lou
Beyer of Searsboro, and Elaine Brown of Oskaloosa.
The body was donated to the University
of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Service of Des Moines.
A memorial service will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Rev. Bob Patterson
officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home,
1101 Broad Street in Keosauqua. Burial
will be at a later date in Purdom Cemetery in Keosauqua.

preceded her in death.

Dunson of Kenton, Margaret Ray of Kentucky, Mrs. Walter (Donna) Salyers of
Arlington, Mrs. Ed (Sally) Ward and Maxine Peterman, both of Findlay; 39
grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker, and a member of
the Church of Christ in Christian Union.

Mrs. Graber was born Sept. 17, 1908, in

Spring-Holzwarth Department Store.
She had previously lived in Alliance
for several years, before moving to Clearwater, Fla.
Mrs. Graber was a member of First
Christian Church. She was preceded in
death by husbands Beryle Stuller and Adolph Graber.
Surviving are a son, Arthur Stuller of
Beloit; a step-daughter, Jean Irwin of Canton; two stepsons, Donald Graber of

in the Courtland Quality Care Nursing Home after a short illness.
She was born Dec. 2, 1901, in Matamoras
to Albert N. and Susanna Kinney Morris.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Second Christian Church at
Warren where she was a member of the Tower Sunday school class. On June 11, 1921, she was married to Bert P.
Graham who died in 1977.
She is survived by six daughters, Mr.
Paul (Dorothy) Hupp and Mrs. Denzil (Betty) Holland, both of St. Marys, W.Va.,
Mrs. Fred (Marcelene) Olson of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Harlan (Ann) Woodward, Mrs.
Thomas (Frances) Bohyer, and Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Moldovan, all of Warren; 12
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter;
three sisters; and two half brothers.
Services were scheduled for 2 p.m.
today in the Robert H. Roberts Memorial Home, 180 Garfield Drive N.E., Warren,

Volmer professed his faith in Christ
and united with the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Grovespring. He was a farmer and also worked in
construction. He enjoyed fishing in his
spare time.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of
the home; three sons, Darrell of Pomme de Terre, Harold of Grovespring and
Jerry of Bates City; one daughter, Kay Earls of Conway; one sister, Dessie

Education Assn., and Kappa Kappa Iota teacher's sorority in Lawrence.
She married Broer Gordon Gustafson on
Jan. 26, 1935,* in Oklahoma. He died Dec. 16, 1987.
Survivors include a son, David E.
Gustafson, Topeka; a daughter, Nancy A. Dando, Oakton, Va.; a sister, Margaret

Rt. 5, Moss Run, died at 12:04 a.m. Monday, June 19, in Heartland of Marietta.
He was born June 4, 1900, in Lawrence
Township to John and Caroline Mosser Gutberlet.
He had lived in Lawrence Township all his life. He had been employed at Remington Rand and
later at Marietta College. He was a
member of Moss Run Community Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher
and a member of the choir for many years.
He married the former Bertha Blanche
Patterson on Jan. 2, 1924. She preceded
him in death on Nov. 15, 1986.
He is survived by one son, Glenn of
Marietta; two daughters, Naomi Moore of Marietta and Mrs. Don (Betty) Frazey of
Junction City, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three
great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Ray V. of Marietta.

Lawrence Township except for four years, during which he served with the U. A.
Army in World War II.
He was a graduate of Lawrence High
School in 1934. He was employed at
Cardex until his retirement in 1980. He
organized the pony league and little leagues baseball programs at Dart and was
a member of the Little Muskingum Grange.
On Jan. 1, 1947, he married Marjorie Tullius.
He is survived by his wife; one son,
Keith Gutverlet of Marietta; two grandchildren, Mitchell and Jill; two
brothers, Clyde Gutverlet of Rt. 5 and Larry of Rt. 5; one sister, Margaret

April 24 at Akron General Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sterling, Mr. Hanzie resided in
Seville for three years, previously residing in Wadsworth for 36 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World
War II, and plant manager of the Wadsworth Foundry for Scovill Inc., retiring
in 1985 with 34 years service. He was a
member of V.F.W. Post 1089 and American Legion Post 170, and enjoyed
woodworking.
Mr. Hanzie is survived by wife, Mildred
L.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Kathy of Guilford Township; daughter
and son-in-law, Linda and Neil Peterson of Wadsworth; five grandchildren;

348 Vennum Ave. died Monday evening in Mansfield Memorial Home after an
extended illness.
He was born Oct. 24, 1914, in New
Martinsville, W. Va., living in Mansfield most of his life. Mr. Harper was a retired employee of the
Tappan Co.
He was a member of the Mansfield Lodge
35 F&AM, AARP and American Legion McVey Post 16. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World
War II.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Beverly
Snavely of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Betty Uhlich Harper of Mansfield; a
number of nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Jane Parr Harper of
Mansfield.
He was preceded in death by one brother,
B. Lee Harper, and one sister, Marybelle Silver.*

Mansfield cemetery.

The name of a deceased sister --
Marybelle Silva -- was spelled incorrectly in the obituary Wednesday on page
5-A for William F. Harper of Vennum Avenue, Mansfield. Also, it was omitted that Mr. Harper was a
1932 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School.

KILLED IN CRASH
Marshall N. Hasson, 25, Dies When
Plane Crashes In Alabama.
Marshall N.
Hasson, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Hasson, Sr., 417 North Second street,
a civilian flying instructor, formerly at Parks Air College, was killed
yesterday in the crash of a light army training plane six miles south of
Tuscaloosa, Ala., the parents were notified by the public relations office of
Van De Groot Field, Ala.
For the past two
and one-half years Hasson was instructor in the Air College at Tuscaloosa and
lived thee with his wife and young son, Marshall N. Jr. His parents here operate the Shiloh Valley
Airport, six miles east of Scott Field, which is used by the Civil Air Patrol
of this area. All fields of this type
and schools are operated under U. S. Army supervision.
In the accident a
flying cadet, whose name has temporarily been withheld, also lost his life. The plane was demolished but did not burn.
Hasson was an
instructor under the Army Air Force’s training program at Alabama Institute of
Aeronautics, Tuscaloosa, Ala., the past 2 1/2 years and previous to that time
was co-operator of the Curtiss Flying Field, East St. Louis.
Five weeks ago he
was in Belleville to visit his parents at which time he told his father that 76
students he had trained were now in the flying service overseas. He has a brother, George H. Hasson on
overseas duty who is the flight engineer on a bomber.
He was born in
Sharon, Pa., and his wife's former home was Akron, Ohio. Surviving him besides those previously named
are the brothers and sisters: Frank L., Chicago; Mrs. Alice Atterbury, and Miss
Janet, St. Louis; and Dorothy Dorris and Arthur, with the parents, here.
The parents will
leave for Akron, O., tomorrow where funeral services will be held.

Alma L. Bigler Highman, 89, formerly of 210 Center Street, Woodsfield, died
Feb. 13, 1989 at Scenic Hills nursing home, Gallipolis. She was born June 23,
1899, at Woodsfield, a daughter of the late Edward and Emma Menkel. She was a
member of the United Methodist church, Woodsfield, VFW auxiliary, American
legion auxiliary, Woodsfield and a long time member of the former I. O. O. F.
lodge of Woodsfield.
She was preceded in death by
her first husband Lawrence Bigler, her second husband A. H. Highman and one
son, Lawrence Bigler, Jr., is survived by two daughters, Grace Drepperd,
Merritt Island, FL., Thelma Blanchard, CA.; two sons, Ray Highman,
Reynoldsburg, Gilbert Bigler, Indiana; several grandchildren, several
great-grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren.
Friends were received Feb. 15
at the Bauer-Turner funeral home where services will be held today a 11 a.m.,
with Rev. Dennis Bewley officiating. Interment in the Oaklawn cemetery,

Hill, 90, of 829 N. 7th St. died at 4 p.m. Saturday in Vermillion Convalescent
Center. He was a retired coal
miner. He was born May 2, 1899, in
Megan* County, Mo., to Frank Hill and Ollie Schutt Hill. Survivors include his wife, Lola Eubanks Hill
of Clinton; two daughters, Elsie Huffman of Paris, Ill., and Josephine
Trueblood of West Terre Haute; two step-daughters, Mabel Foster and Maxine
Davies of Dennison, Texas; two brothers, William and Lloyd of New Goshen; one
sister, Sadie Revesz of Universal; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren;
and great-great-grandchildren. He was a
member of the United Mine Workers.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Frist Funeral Home with
the Rev. Joe Sollars officiating. Burial
is in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation
is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Lester A. Hodgkiss, age 61, of 2131
Amherst Rd. N.E., passed away Sunday morning at his home following a two year
illness.
Lester was born in Wheeling, WV, and lived
in Massillon since 1961. He was a member
of Christ Lutheran Church, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of the
home; daughter and son-in-law, Niki and Rock Yager; son and daughter-in-law,
Neal H. and Karen Hodgkiss both of Jackson Twp; grandchildren, Kendra and
Krista Hodgkiss, and Kyle Yager; mother Mame Hodgkiss of Morristown, OH;
sisters, Mrs. Betty Lavitchka of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Fern Coleman, Mrs.

MADISON -- David Hoplight, 48, of 1148
Grand Ave., died Friday at Memorial Hospital of Geneva.
Born May 3, 1941, in Erie, he was a son
of William and Irene (Rood) Hoplight and lived in the Madison area for the past
six years.
Mr. Hoplight was employed by the U.S.
Postal Service and was a letter carrier in the Thompson Township area. He retired from service in the U.S. Navy
after 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, the former
Cindy Nagle, three daughters, Jacklyne* Emlee and Kristene Williams, both of
Tulsa, Okla., and Sonya Hoplight of Madison; two stepsons, Charles Jarvi and

"Windy" Jaggers, 72, of Wingfield died at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday at the
Medical Center in Bowling Green after a brief illness.
The Indiana native was a retired
farmer, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Ollie United Baptist Church,
Veteran of Foreign War Post 6937 and Disabled American Veterans.
He was a son of the late Solomon and
Laurie Jaggers.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at
Otter Gap Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation is in progress at Gravil Funeral

Wilford Jarboe, 73, of Evansville, died
at 10:30 a.m. yesterday at Deaconess Hospital.
Mr. Jarboe, a member of Central United
Methodist Church, retired in 1981 as director of the Media Center of the
Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp., after 42 years of perfect attendance.
He was a former teacher and principal
in Spencer and Vanderburgh counties.
Mr. Jarboe taught defensive driving
classes for the Vanderburgh County Misdemeanor Traffic Court, and was assistant
state coordinator of the southwest district of 55 Alive.
He was on the board of Central
Library. He received the Audio Visual
Instruction Director Service Award for outstanding contributions to
audio-visual instruction, and the Edgar Dale Award, a national audio visual
award for outstanding contributions.
Mr. Jarboe, A Kentucky Colonel, was
past president of the Breakfast Optimist Club and the Evansville Retired
Teachers Association.
He was a graduate of the University of
Evansville, and received his master's degree from Indiana University. He was past president of Phi Delta Kappa.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine
"Jo"; daughters, Patricia Ann Buchanan of Columbia, Mo., and
Priscilla Sue Wilson of West Lafayette, Ind.; his mother, Edith Jarboe of
Bloomington, Ind.; brothers, Dr. Everett Jarboe and the Rev. Morris Jarboe,
both of Bloomington; and, grandsons, Andrew and Adams Wilson, both of West
Lafayette.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m.
tomorrow at Central United Methodist Church.
The body will be cremated.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Alexander Funeral Home North
Chapel.
The family said friends, if they wish,
may make memorial contributions to the Evansville Retired Teachers Association
to establish a scholarship for a high school student pursuing an audio-visual
degree or to the Santa Claus, Ind., campgrounds.

HUDSON -- Effie G. (Ellis) Johnson, 81,
died Tuesday in Akron General Hospital.
She was born in Eagleville Jan. 26,
1908, a daughter of Charles and Fanny (Pratt) Ellis. She lived in Ashtabula 35 years, in Pompano
Beach, Fla., 11 years, and for the past nine years, in Hudson. She retired after 25 years of service from
Farmer's National Bank, Ashtabula, where she was employed as a teller.
Mrs. Johnson enjoyed poetry and wrote
many poems; played the organ at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Pompano
Beach; was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hudson; and of Order of the
Eastern Star, Ashtabula Chapter.
Survivors include her husband of 55
years, Carl; a son, Carl Herbert Johnson of Houston, Texas; a daughter,
Patricia Lucille Wiley of Hudson; two grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a brother,
Earl Ellis.
Service is 2 p.m. Friday in Gloria Dei
Lutheran Church. Interment will be in
Crown Hill Cemetery, Twinsburg.
The family will receive friends 1 p.m.
Friday until the time of service in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

He was born in Grandview, Ind., was employed at Tell City Chair Co. and was a

GAMBRILLS, Md. -- Mary Ola Jones, 75,
of Gambrills, formerly of Belpre and Charleston, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 8, in
Anne Arundel General Hospital at Annapolis, Md.
She was born July 21, 1913, in
Matamoras to George Warren and Lydia Goodballot McCamey. She was a member of Rockland United Methodist
Church and the Methodist Women. She was
a nurse at Staats Hospital in Charleston, W.Va., from 1937 to 1950 and at St.
Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg from 1960 to 1976. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star and
White Shrine at Charleston.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary
L. Dobish; one grandson; one granddaughter; and one brother, Pete McCamey.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Andrew Russell Jones, in 1976.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at
Rockland United Methodist Church at Belpre with the Rev. Dennis Ditto and the
Rev. Maurice Bailey officiating. Burial
will be in Rockland Cemetery. Friends

Ruth Elvena Jones, daughter
of William and Florence Huffman Lallathin, born November 2, 1906, departed this
life July 23, 1989.
On February 16, 1928 she was
married to Homer Jones. To this union were born three daughters and two sons.
Hazel Barker of Sardis; Gladys Lytton of Bridgeport; James W. and Carl E., died
in infancy; Dorothy Bayes, Benwood Road, Sardis; ten grandchildren and twelve
great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the
Church of Christ, West Union, for many years and attended regularly as health
permitted.
Services were held at the
Rush Funeral Home, Sardis, with Alvin and Donald Thompson officiating on July
26. Interment in West Union Cemetery.

age 15 days, of Ukiah was at 10 a.m. today at the Ukiah cemetery. The Rev. Gary Lombardi of St. Mary's Catholic

the service. The King infant died
Wednesday, Oct. 18 at a San Francisco hospital.
He was born Oct. 3, 1989 in Ukiah. He is survived by his parents, Philip and
Janine King of Ukiah; his twin brother, Philip Warren King; older brother Joel
Thompson and older sister Rachel Charlotte King; grandparents Kathryn and Duane
Thompson and Mark and Nancy King, all of Ukiah; and great grandmother Charlotte
King.

of 3173 Carson Highway, Adrian, Mich., formerly of Newcomerstown, died Sunday
evening, Aug. 13, 1989, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in
Adrian.
Born Feb. 19, 1948, in Cambridge, he
was a son of William F. Kinkade of Cumberland and Charlene (Beiger)* Kindade
[sic--Kinkade] Moore of Newcomerstown.
A 1966 graduate of Newcomerstown he was
employed with Bohn Aluminum in Adrian.
He also was a member of Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club.
Kinkade was a former member of
Kimbolton Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents
are a son, David Kinkade of Paulding; three daughters, Mrs. Kelly Edwards of
Van Wert, Mrs. Fawn Watson of Georgia and Taletha Kinkade of Marrietta [sic--Marietta];
three stepbrothers, Larry Porter of Kimbolton, James Porter of Rockwell, Texas,
and Craig Moore of Newcomersatown [sic--Newcomerstown]; a sister, Mrs.
Robert (Linda) Arnold of Grove City; stepsister, Dixie Moore of Newcomerstown;

Mrs. Kinkade died Thursday in a local
nursing home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1902, in Comanche
County, Texas, and lived in Texas until moving to Cache when she was 15. She was a resident of the Cache area until
moving to Lawton six years ago. She
married William R. Roach, Oct. 26, 1918, in Cache; he died March 17, 1956. She later married Orville A. Kinkade, Sept.
1, 1958 in Lawton. She was a member of
the Church of Christ in Cache.
Survivors include her husband, of the
home; a son, Charles Roach, Chelsea; two daughters: Peggy Gibson, Chelsea; and Marie Huddleston,
of Tulsa; a stepson, David Kinkade, Lawton; two stepdaughters: Geneva Lynch and Juanita Weger, both of

from high school in Frederick, Colo. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in the fall
of 1987.
He is survived by his parents of

James Earl "Jim" Kruger, 55,

Road, Duffy, died Friday morning, November 24, 1989, in the Monroe County Care
Center, Woodsfield. He was born June 17,

in New Martinsville, W. Va., a veteran of World War II, a member of American

former resident of Washington County, died Saturday afternoon, March 25, in
Elyria United Methodist Home after a 14-month illness.
She was born July 2, 1917, at Schley. Her home had been at Elyria for the past 23

Baptist Church at Elyria.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs.
Adrian (Jean) Shriver of North Ridgeville; three grandsons; two

sisters, Mrs. Elva Ramsier of Grafton and Mrs. Vera Czuprun of North
Ridgeville.
She married Lyle D. Martin on Nov. 7,
1936. He preceded her in death on Sept.
1, 1971. She also was preceded in death
by one son, Richard Martin, in 1967.

Sarah Marie Matheny, 90,
formerly of 1319 Cottage St., died at Griffeth Nursing Home Monday evening
following a long illness. She was born Dec.
31,1898, in Monroe County, the daughter of James and Mary Drake Smith. Mrs. Matheny had been a resident of Ashland
County most of her life. She was a
homemaker. She worked in the food service department at Ashland College several
years ago. She was a member of Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, William, in 1966.
Surviving are one son, Eugene
Lucas of Chicago Heights, III.; one daughter, Marjorie Bone of Ashland; one
stepson, Ralph Matheny of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Gertrude
Bouchard of Columbus and Louella Smith of Wayne, Mich.; several grandchildren
and greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Anne Lallathin of Woodsfield.

Clarence G. Matz, 100, formerly of 614 Western Drive,
Wooster, died January 24, 1989 at Horn Nursing Home, where he had been a
resident for the last four years.
Services were held January 27 at Custer Funeral Home,
Wooster with Reverend Armin C. Bizer and Reverend Richard Wierwille officiating
followed by burial at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Matz was born in 1888 to Phillip and Elizabeth
(Ripper) Matz in Monroe County. He moved to Wooster in 1924 from
Lewisville. He worked for various oil fields, a sheet metal shop,
Rubbermaid, and later for the City of Wooster at the Sewage Treatment
Plant. He was an Army veteran of World War I, a 70-year member of the
Woodsfield Masonic Lodge, and WWI Legion in Wooster, active in I.O.O.F., and a
member of Trinity United Church of Christ.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Kaye) Hess
and Mrs. Carl (Betty Lee) Byler, both of Wooster; three grandchildren; and
three great grandchildren.
His wife, Elsa Harmon Matz, died in 1984. Two brothers
and four sisters also died previously.

Willie T. Matz, 79, of 1011 Orange Road,
Ashland, died June 19 in the Samaritan Hospital in Ashland following a short
illness. A native of Monroe County, he was born June 08, 1910, the son of
Charles and Mary Ann Neibch Matz. A resident of Ashland for the past 32 years,
he was a former employee of the Eagle Rubber Company retiring in 1972. Mr. Matz
was a member of the Steele Avenue Church of Christ in Ashland.
On Nov. 08, 1933 he was married to Nellie
L. Morris who pre-deceased him on Aug. 13, 1987.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul
(Normalee) Wilson and Mrs. Troy (Bertha) Cranmore, both of Ashland; two sons,
Walter of Ashland and Clyde of Polk; 17 grandchildren; one brother, Harry Matz
of Dalton.
Services were held June 21 at 2p.m. From

Motorcycle crash
kills Bedford man
A Bedford man was killed in a
motorcycle accident late Friday while visiting friends in eastern Pennsylvania.
Police said Ralph S. McGrew Jr., 30,
died after his motorcycle hit a utility pole while he was trying to make a left
turn. He had been traveling east on Pennsylvania 120 in Clinton County, Pa.
He had worked for six years as a welder
at Clifton Steel Co. in Twinsburg. He attended Bedford High School and
graduated from West Technical High School in Cleveland.
Surviving are his wife, Paulette; sons,
Ralph S. III and Jamie; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at
the Johnson-Romito funeral home, 521 Broadway Ave., Bedford.

ROBERT H. (RED) MCWILLIAMS SR., 65,
Canton, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 2, 1989, at Memorial Hospital in
Towanda. Mr. McWilliams was born March 6, 1924, in Alba, a son of Louis and
Louise Foust McWilliams. He was retired in 1988 after 25 years of employment in
the maintenance and electrical department of the Swayze Folding Box Co. Inc.,
Canton. Prior to his employment at Swayze's, he was a self-employed plumbing
and heating contractor. Mr. McWilliams attended the First Baptist Church,
Canton. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, a member of the Canton
VFW Post 714, and Canton Moose Lodge, No. 429. His hobbies included sports and
photography.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Hallie Trent (Weldy), with whom he celebrated 12 years of marriage May 26,
1989; a daughter, Maureen McWilliams, Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Donna
and Eddie Wallace, Simpsonville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, David and Sandra
McWilliams, Canton; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Duane Wrisley,
Burlington, Patricia and Carl Pipp, Horseheads, NY; step-son, Thomas Weldy,
Towanda; three grandchildren, Chris Wallace and Derek and Joshua McWilliams;
five step-grandchildren, Patrick and Jeffrey Wrisley, Michelle Pipp and Sean
and Sonya Weldy. He was predeceased by a son, Pfc. Robert H. McWilliams Jr.,
who was killed in Viet Nam, Dec. 29, 1967, and his first wife, the former Jean
Machmer, July 29, 1974.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at
the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton, with the Rev. Norman Pierce, his
pastor officiating. Pallbearers were, David Myers, Russell Machmer, Patrick
Wrisley, Jack McNett, Jerry McNett, and Elwin Roberts.

Clarence F. Mercer, 86, of Reynoldsburg, died
at 6:55 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Louis A. Johnson Medical Center after an
extended illness.
He was born in Middlebourne Aug. 23,
1902, a son of the late Emil H. and Mary Wells Mercer.
His wife, Myrtle, preceded him in
death.
Surviving are one sister, Gladys
Lancaster, Paden City, one cousin, Mont* E. Harris, Reynoldsville, with whom he
made his home for the past 23 years and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one
brother, Clyde and a half brother, Jim.
Mr. Mercer was a veteran, having served
in the United States Army from Aug. 21, 1942 to March 17, 1945, when he was
discharged from the convalescent hospital in Fort Story, Va. He was Protestant.

the Margaret McGlumphy Mortuary, 260 East Main St. A graveside service will be held in the West
Virginia National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Rochle* Stricklen*

Former chief of staff of the Morgan
County Memorial Hospital, Dr. Robert J. Miller Sr., 80, 5245 State Road 37
South, died Wednesday, March 8, 1989, at Bloomington Hospital natural causes.
The son of Roscoe and Leona Kohlmeier
Miller, he was born Oct. 23, 1908, in Somerville. On Sept. 5, 1936, he married Burnice Snyder,
and she survives.
Mr. Miller graduated from Indiana
University in 1933, Indiana University Medical School at Indianapolis in 1937,
and in 1938 served his internship at Detroit, Mich. In 1940 he opened his office for practice in
Evansville and continued there until 1961.
He served six months at the Fort Peck, Mont., Indian Reservation under
the Kennedy Administration.
In 1961, Dr. Miller came to
Martinsville and opened his office in Paragon, retiring on July 4, 1976. During World War II, Dr. Miller served in the
U.S. Air Force with the Flying Tigers in China.
For three years the captain was head of the field hospital there.
Dr. Miller attended the Eastview
Christian Church, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American
Legion, Moose Lodge, Theta Chi and Phi Beta Pi fraternities, Indiana University
Alumni Association and Indiana Medical Association.
The 2:30 p.m. Saturday funeral will be
at Cure & Hensley-Costin Funeral Chapel.
The Rev. Gary Cornwell will officiate.
Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
Friends may call 3 to 9 p.m. today.
The American Legion and Veterans of

CHINOOK -- Floyd F. Miller, 72, a
retired Montana Power Co. employee, died Tuesday of natural causes at a Havre
rest home.
His funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Edwards Funeral Home with burial in Kuper Memorial Cemetery in Chinook.
Born at Hampton,* N.D., he attended
schools in Savoy and graduated from high school in Harlem.
In 1941, he married Dorlene Friede at
Great Falls.
He was a World War II Army
veteran. He worked for 32 years in the
gas fields south of Chinook and retired from MPC in 1982.
Survivors include his wife; children,
Larry of Harlem, Lorraine Schwenke of Landusky, Judy Brady of Wyoming, Marilyn
Huft of Plentywood; a sister, Nora Anderson of North Dakota; nine
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Road, Randolph, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Wednesday at Robinson
Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Mr. Minear was born March 22, 1947, in
Akron,* to Harley and Eleanor Herman [sic–Hartman] Minear, and was
employed as a truck driver for Anstram Cartage Co. He was a member of New Testament Baptist
Church in Ravenna.
Mr. Minear is survived by his wife,
Glennis (White); two daughters, Debra and Connie, and a son, David, all of the
home; his mother of Toronto (Ohio); four brothers, Frank of Deerfield, Roger
and Virgil, both of Akron, and George of Toronto; and a grandchild.
His father and a sister, Louise, both
died in 1985, and a brother, Paul, died in 1979.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at
the Atwater Chapel of Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Lanham

Oak Grove neighborhood. She was a member

teacher in the Sunday school. She was
past president of the Oak Grove Missionary Society and Muskingum Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, Oval
Morris, whom she married Oct. 18, 1924; one son, Pat of Williamstown; four
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rd., Galion, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 1989 in the Galion
Community Hospital Emergency Room after a long illness.
Born Aug. 6, 1923 in Martins Ferry, he
was the son of Harry Nalley, deceased, and Freda (Bloominhaur) Nalley Glasser,
who survives in Wheeling, W. Va. He was
married March 25, 1978 to Ruth A. Weaver, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs.
Thomas (Cheryl) Poole, Painesville, a son, Sgt. Raymond E. Young Jr., United
States Marine Corps, Irvine, Calif., three grandchildren and a sister, Elsie
Roof, New Carlisle. He was preceded in
death by two sons.
Mr. Nalley had worked as
a conductor and was a 38-year employee of Conrail. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was a
member of VFW Post 2920, Crestline, American Legion Scarborough Post 243,
Galion, and Polk Township AMVETS Post 1979.
He was also a member of Galion Moose Lodge 303, U.T.U. Railroad Union
and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Hospital following an extended illness.
She was a member of Woodsfield First Free Methodist Church. Born March 15, 1906 in Middlebourne, W.Va.,
she was the daughter of the late David and Margaret (Leach) Hissom.
Her husband, Allorenza Piatt, preceded her in death in
1965.
Mrs. Piatt is survived by three sons, Arthur Piatt of
Ashland, Ohio, and Archie Piatt and Paul Piatt, both of Lewisville; two
half-sisters, Dorothy Crosby of New Concord and Mary Nalley of Graysville;
several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in
death by three brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter, one step-daughter, one
step-son and one half-sister.

CARDINGTON -- Richard E. Pletcher, 54,
formerly of County Road 46, Mount Gilead, died Saturday afternoon in O'Bleness
Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born June 24, 1935, in Marion County,
he was the son of Floren and Luella (Miller) Pletcher. The father survives in Cardington and the
mother survives in Marion.
A member of Blooming Grove United
Methodist Church, Mr. Fletcher had been a machinist with Perfection Steel in
Galion. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He also is survived by two daughters,
Jennifer Pletcher of Galion and Amy Pletcher of Johnsville; two brothers,
Kenneth E. Pletcher of Caledonia and Jerry L. Pletcher of Marion; and three
sisters, Norma Jean Rakes of Mentor and Ruth Ann Dutton and Betty Jane
Stanforth, both of Marion.

Lewisville, died early Sunday evening, Oct. 15 at the Barnesville
Hospital. He was born Feb. 14, 1911 at
Woodsfield, a son of the late William C. and Minnie Buchanan Polen.
He was a retired plumbing and
electrical contractor; a member of Lewisville Methodist Church, the Masonic
Lodge No. 189 of Woodsfield; a 32nd Degree Mason; a member of the Scottish Rite
of Cambridge, the Aladdin Temple of Columbus, the Monroe County Shrine Club,
Monroe County Park Board, and the Regional Planning Commission.
He was preceded in death by one
brother, Clelland R. Polen in 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Lela DeVoe
Polen of Lewisville; one sister, Mrs. Geneva Paulus of Woodsfield; several
nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the
Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services were held at 1 p.m. Oct.
17 with Rev. Lester Flauhaus officiating.

9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pope died Sunday, July 16 at home.
She was born Sept. 19, 1926 in Arkansas
and lived in Ukiah 39 years. She retired
as a psychiatric technician from the Mendocino State Hospital and belonged to
the California State Employees' Association.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph
Pope of Ukiah; children Carol Faye Scott and Patricia Ann Smith, both of Ukiah,
and Vernon Edwin Smith Jr. of Oroville; six grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, a sister, Jessie Faye Branch of Mt. Olive, N.C., and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith Kinkaid* Porter, was born March 1, 1934 in Lebanon and died March 31,
1989 at his home. On May 9, 1958 he was
married to Georgia Ruble. He was
preceded in death by his son, Everett.
In addition to his wife, Georgia, he is
survived by three sons, Allen and David of Berwick Maine, and Paul of Lebanon;
a daughter, Barbara Carson of Berwick; his parents, seven brothers, Roy, David,
Bob, Kenny, Jim, Bill and Sherman, and two sisters, Wilma Bowling and Freda
Berry, and his parents, all of Lebanon; also seven grandchildren.
Fay grew up in the Lebanon area and
served for nine years in the United States Army. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church
and enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

she was united in marriage to John Porter.
She was preceded in death by her father and two half-brothers.
Lois is
survived by her husband, John, of the home; her mother, Thelma George, Lebanon;
two sons, John Porter, Kansas City Missouri and James Porter, Conway, Missouri;
two daughters, Betty Scott and Pauline Smith, both of Lebanon; one step-son,
Danny Porter, Lebanon; two step-daughters, Connie Jones, Lebanon and Jeanie
Barker, Stoutland, Missouri; one sister, Geraldine Brown, Lebanon; a number of
grandchildren; also a host of other relatives and friends.
She made
her home in the Lebanon area all of her life.
She accepted Christ as a youth and attended the Pentecostal and Baptist
Churches.

enjoyed sewing, crocheting and taking care of her family.
She will
be fondly remembered as a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and a
caring friend.

He was born May 1, 1915, at
Stanleyville in Fearing Township, to Samuel P. and Emma Williams Schwartz. He graduated from Marietta High School in
1933 and later served in the U.S.Army as a paratrooper during World War II in
Australia, New Guinea and Panama.
His home has been in Marietta since
1945. He was a member of Christ United

5108 Veterans of Foreign Wars; Pioneer City Chapter 52, Disabled American

On May 6, 1944, he married Bernice
Oliver, who survives with two daughters, the Rev. Nancy Schwartz of Belpre and
Shirley Schwartz Klosek of Jacksonville, Fla.; one granddaughter, Cathy Klosek;
one brother, John Schwartz of Marietta; three sisters, Mary Lou Burnworth and
Glenda Johnson of Marietta and Alice Schwartz of Columbus; two half-brothers,
James Schwartz of Cortland and Charles Schwartz of Cardington; two
half-sisters, Audrey Keller of Marietta and Goldie Yates of Belpre; and a
number of nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his brother

Smith, 67, Retired Potter
Richard R. "Porkey" Smith,
67, of Washington Street, Newell, died at 7:53 a.m. today, March 14, 1989, at
City Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in East Liverpool Sept. 29,
1921, a son of the late Charles Smith and Marian Smith Rose.
A 42-year employee of the Homer
Laughlin China Co. before retiring, Mr. Smith has resided in Newell since 1984. He was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1941, and had served with the U.S. Army
during World War II. He was an honorary
member of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers
International Union, a member of East Liverpool Masonic Lodge 681, and a 32nd
degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of
Steubenville.
Survivors include his wife, Esta Mercer
Smith, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Robin) Haynes of Fredericksburg, Va.; three
sons, John T. Smith of Smithville, Ohio,
Terry L. Smith, at home, and Jeffrey S. Smith of East Liverpool; two sisters,
Mrs. James (Vera) Reed of Orrville, Ohio, and Mrs. Donna Briggs of Hanoverton;
seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Charles Parry of the pastoral care
department at the hospital is to conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the
Dawson Funeral Home. Burial is to be in
Spring Grove Cemetery.

Aaron Junior Snyder, 65, of Sandyville died
Monday, April 17, 1989 at Jackson General Hospital following a short illness.
Mr. Snyder was born October 27, 1923 in
Jackson County, a son of the late George W. and Jessie Dillon Snyder. He was a World War II veteran.
Surviving: wife, Florell Randolph Snyder; son, Bill of
Sandyville; daughters, Cindy Butcher and Judy Whited, both of Ripley, Dollie*
Snyder, Emily Jones and Linda Jones, all of Sandyville and Carolyn Metz of

2223 Ranfield Road, died Wednesday at Altercare Nursing Home in Ravenna after a
long illness.
Born Aug. 5, 1912 in Pine Grove, W.
Va., he was the son of Amos and Stella Stackpole.
Mr. Stackpole worked for the Lawson
Milk Company as a maintenance person before retiring in 1974 after 28 years of
service. He also was a deputy with the
Portage County Sheriff's Department until 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia
(Staley); sons Clifford and Robert both of Randolph; daughter, Shirley
Smithberger of Rootstown; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers,
Donald of New York, and Paul and Richard both of Columbus; and sisters, Gladis

Staib Sr., 77, formerly of Bloomfield Road, East Liverpool, who died at 5:45
p.m. Friday, June 16, 1989, at Hutton Nursing Center II of Salem following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 3, 1912, at
Clairington,* Ohio, a son of the late Oscar J. and Fannie Staib.
A resident here most of his lifetime, Mr.
Staib was a molder 28 years at the former Crucible Steel Co. before retiring in
1968. He was a member of the Northside
Church.
His wife, Margaret Trembly Staib, whom
he married Oct.12, 1932, died Aug. 16, 1982.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
James (Phyllis) Swanson of Riverside, Calif.; two sons, Eugene Staib of
Cuyahoga Falls and Paul W. Staib Jr. of Salem; a brother, Glenn L. Staib of
East Liverpool; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Beckley, died Saturday, Dec. 24 in a Charleston hospital, following a car
accident in Braxton County, according to the Braxton County Sheriff's
Department.
Born May12, 1977, she was survived by

Miss Staley attended the Lincoln
Elementary School where she was a sixth grader.

He was born in Belington, WV, a son of

He was a Presbyterian by faith and a veteran of World Ware [sic--War]
II where he served with the Sea Bees in the Aleutians. He was a member of the St. George Masonic
Lodge No. 200 in Bermuda. He was a
member of the 32nd degree Masons with membership in the Parkersburg Scottish
Rites Bodies. He was a member of the
Nemesis Temple of Parkersburg, the Tyler County an [sic--and] Marietta
Shrine clubs. He was a member of the St.
Marys Lodge 1701, BPOE.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Mary
Locke Thacker; three sons, Allen J. Thacker and Thomas L. Thacker, both of St.
Marys and John D. Thacker, of Cary, NC; one sister, Arline Thacker of

years, retiring Jan. 8, 1982. Tiemeyer
was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Cushman Club of America and
Vintage Club, and was a phonograph collector.
Born Jan. 8, 1927, in Bartholomew
County, Tiemeyer was the son of Martin F. and Ada Volland Tiemeyer. He married Dorothy Wimmer on July 12, 1953,
at Milroy. She survives.
Also surviving are daughters, Donna M.
Tiemeyer of Columbus and Staff Sgt. Anita S. Tiemeyer of San Antonio, Texas;
sisters, Betty Unger and Martina Tiemeyer of Columbus; and several nieces,

He is survived by one son, William

died Feb. 19, 1989 in Lakeland, Fla.
Mr. Tuel retired in 1972 as a
millwright after 13 years’ service at the Terex plant, a division of General
Motors. Prior to that, he worked for
Kent Machine in Cuyahoga Falls. He was
born in New Matamoras, and lived for 50 years in the Tallmadge area. He was a member of the Chapel in University
Park and Calvary Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fla.
He was preceded in death by parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Tuel; three sisters; and two brothers; and is survived by
wife, Melba; sons and daughters-in-law, John and LaVerne Tuel of Brimfield,
Richard and Faye Tuel of Missouri; six grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

Bridge, died Thursday, March 9, at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville.
Born July 2, 1918, at Delmont, Pa., to
Joseph Walton and Ken- ____________________,* he moved here from Collinsville,
Okla., in 1982. He was a member of the
Community Lost Bridge Chapel. A retired
Navy lieutenant commander, serving in the American, Asiatic-Pacific and China
and Philippines areas during WWII. He
received the Good Conduct, National Defense, and Presidential Unit Citation
medals. He was a member of the Retired
Officers Association, and VFW Post 3077.
Survivors are his wife, June Walton;
two sons, Rick Walton of Anahiem, Calif., and Merle W. Walton Jr., of Havasu
City, Ariz.; four daughters, Diane Goodman of Fernley, Nev., and Pricilla
Walton, Jennifer Rochte and Heidi Walton, all of California, and a brother,

of the Lowell and Marietta area, died at 1:35 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph
Hospital at Parkersburg, after a long illness.
He was born March 11, 1916, in Lowell
to Leo G. and Laura B. Born Wetz. He had
lived for several years in Peebles and since May had been a resident of the
Arcadia Nursing Home at Coolville. He
was a retired truck driver having worked for various companies in this
area. He was a World War II veteran
serving in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by one son, James E. of
Parkersburg; three grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Evalyn Ketsdever of Albany,

the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with Theodore Koroluk of
the Briscoe Run Baptist Church of Vienna, W.Va. officiating. Burial will be in Highland Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Matthew Alan Willis Jr., 1-day-old son
of Angela and Matthew Willis Sr. of 1523 N. St. James Boulevard, died at 2:57
p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Surviving in addition to the parents
are grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Willis of Chandler, and Mr. and Mrs.
James Suter of Newburgh; and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Willis of
Chandler, Hazel Lemmons of Evansville, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Suter of Boonville
and Lawrence Carpenter of Rockport.
Graveside services were scheduled for
today at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Willis officiating.
There was no visitation at Perigo
Funeral Home in Chandler.

Flodie F. Yost, 87, of Middlebourne,
died Tuesday, August 23 at home. She was
preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1974. Surviving are four sons, Edward of
Sistersville, Jerry of Middlebourne, George and Pete, both of New Martinsville;
three daughters, Exelee Minks, Ellen Porter and Lucille Gulley, all of
Middlebourne, 28 grandchildren; nine gerat-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Furbee Funeral
Home, Middlebourne, where services were held Friday, Aug. 25. Interment in Mercer Cemetery, New
Martinsville.

HOLMESVILLE -- Charles A.Young, 87, of
Ohio 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the home of his son in Wooster, following a
brief illness.
Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
at Johnston-Schlabach Funeral Home in Shreve with the Rev. Jeff Starkey
officiating. Burial will be at Nashville
Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m.
at the funeral home.

He was born in Monroe County in 1902 to
Henry and Anne Weber Young and married Mary E. Fishburn Feb. 16, 1932. She died Dec. 12, 1984.
He was a retired farmer and a 50-year
member of the Clinton Grange.
Surviving are three children, Gerald W.
of Wooster, Barbara A. Price of Loudonville and Betty J. Phillips of Wooster;
eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one brother, Ernest of
Loudonville.
Two brothers, Raymond and George, a
grandson and two great-grandchildren died previously.

James J. Zwick, age 56,
formerly of Sherman Church Ave. SW, and more recently of 152-43rd St. SW,
Canton, was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at Guernsey Memorial Hospital in
Cambridge after having an apparent heart attack. He was born in Lewisville, OH and had lived
in Canton since 1951. Employed by the Timken Company with 38 years of service,
member of Golden Lodge and St. Mary's Catholic Church. An Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survived by his wife, Rita;
one daughter, Krista A. Zwick of the home; five sons, David of Canton, Donald,
Michael and Robert, all of the home, and Ronald of East Sparta; one grandson,
Michael of Canton; three sisters, Kathleen Mays of Canton, Many Ring of
Woodsfield and Mrs. Roger (Donna) Stanley of North Carolina; one brother,
Francis of Harrisburg, OH.
Mass of Christian Burial will
be Thursday at10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Sommer,
M.S.C.as Celebrant. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4
and 7-9 p.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave.
