Source: The Canton [Ohio] Repository; 11 Aug 1987
I. W. Abel, age 78, of 7267 Canton Rd.
NW, Malvern, Passed away Monday afternoon in his residence after an illness of
four months.
He was born in Magnolia on
Aug. 11, 1908, son of the late John F. and Mary Anne Jones Abel, and resided in
the East Sparta and Canton area until 1952.
Mr. Abel, who had made his home in Sun City, AZ, for a number of years
since his retirement in 1977, had changed his residence to Malvern about a year
ago.
Mr. Abel joined the labor
movement as a young man during the Depression, when the only work he could find
was firing kilns in a brickyard for 16 cents an hour, 12 hours a day and seven
days a week. From his job in the
brickyard, Mr. Abel was, in succession, an officer and eventually President of
USWA Local #1123, which he helped organize, at The Timken Co.; a member of the
Steelworkers Organizing Committee, forerunner of the USWA; Director of District
27 of the Union from 1942-1952, when he was elected International
Secretary-Treasurer. In 1965, Mr. Abel
was elected International President of the United Steelworkers of America for
the first of three terms. He served as a
Vice President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial
Organizations (AFL-CIO) from 1965 until his retirement. He was still a dues paying member of Golden
Lodge Local #1123 at the time of this death.
Mr. Abel was an advocate of community
service by Steelworkers, urging by word and deed that Union members take an
active role in civic, political and charitable works. He himself served on many such bodies,
including the National Advisory Commission of Civil Disorders (Kerner Commission), which investigated the disorders in
American cities in 1967 and made recommendations for remedial actions, and as
an alternate delegate to the U.S. Delegation of the United Nations. Mr. Abel was
appointed as a member of the General Advisory Committee on Arms Control and
Disarmament by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
He also was appointed a member of the President's Task Force on Air
Pollution in 1969. He was a member of
the Board of Directors of the Americans for Indian Opportunity. On Oct. 22, 1971, President Nixon appointed
Mr. Abel as one of the five labor members of the the
Pay Board under the Stabilization Program.
Mr. Abel, and the other two AFL-CIO members of the Board, resigned from
the Board on March 22, 1972 in protest against the Board's policies. On July 11, 1973, Mr. Abel was named a member
of the 10 member Labor-Management Advisory Committee to the Cost of Living
Council under Phase III of the President's wage-price control program.
Mr. Abel was the recipient of numerous
awards, including the Medal of Freedom presented by President Gerald Ford;
honorary doctorates from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA; Alliance College
in Cambridge Springs, PA; and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received the first labor award presented
by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change in 1976, which cited
him for his "contributions to the social and economic well-being of American people of all races and origins." He was named "The A. Philip Randolph Man
of the Year" in 1965 by the Negro Trade Union Leadership Council of
Philadelphia and Delaware County for his many years of dedicated service in the
cause of organized labor, civil rights, equality of opportunity and the general
welfare of the people.
In addition, the State of Israel
honored Mr. Abel for advancing the cause of democracy through exemplary
leadership for working men and women, and the Four Freedoms Foundation
presented him the Franklin D. Roosevelt Award for perpetuating the spirit and ideals of the late
President, and for helping keep alive the principles of the Four Freedoms.
Mr. Abel was the first President of the
Steelworkers Organization of Active
Retirees (SOAR), which was to activate steelworker retirees similar to the
enthusiasm he engendered into the members of the USWA.
He was a member of Willowbrook
United Methodist Church in Sun City, the 79er's Lions Club, member and founder
of the Union Club of Sun City, the National Council of Senior Citizens,
Mayfield Senior Center of Canton, and was a Life Member of the Magnolia Area
Historical Society.
