City Man Dies in Downtown
Shootout
by Mark Pawlosky
William Clarence Crisp, 84, holed up in
his Franklin Street apartment with a .22-caliber rifle, exchanged a volley of
shots with city and state police late Friday afternoon before he was mortally
wounded by officers.
Crisp died shortly after the shooting
at Major Hospital. Lee Fisher, county
coroner, said today after Crisp's autopsy that a slug fired from a .357-caliber
handgun entered the lower chest area and caused severe damage to the victim's
liver and kidney before exiting from the back.
Crisp also took a full blast in the
left side from a riot shotgun, removing part of his nose and causing his left
lung to collapse, Fisher said.
"It's hard to tell if he was shot
more than once with the shotgun because of all the pellets," the coroner
said.
"Either of the two shots could
have been the fatal wound. It's strange
and it doesn't happen often, but either one could have been fatal."
Fisher, who said Dr. Jerry Stransky from
the Community Hospital conducted the autopsy, added there was "massive
internal bleeding" from the liver wound sustained by Crisp.
Officers had been summoned to the scene
after Crisp shot his neighbor, Sylvester Hitch, 53, in the left hand, said
Asst. Shelbyville Police Chief Russell Mason today.
Mason did not know what provoked Crisp
to shoot Hitch in the first place. Hitch
has been admitted at Major Hospital.
State Trooper Jeff Hammond and
Patrolman Jim Stephens were the first officers to arrive at the dilapidated,
musty-smelling apartment building on the northwest corner of the intersection
of N. Harrison and Franklin streets.
State Police Lt. Richard Jones and city Det. Lt. Mike Dagley showed up
seconds later, Mason said.
The officers had been alerted about
Crisp by Kathy Fritz,* who ran to police headquarters and blurted out
"someone has been shot." The
woman, apparently shaken by the incident, could not tell officers how to get to
the building. Instead, she had to ride
with the officers, pointing down the streets to turn on.
The woman, who lives on N. Pike Street,
and another man were in Hitch's apartment when the shooting of Hitch took
place, officers said.
The officers first tried to get Hitch out
of his apartment, which adjoins Crisp's upstairs (second-floor) four-room
flat. However, Crisp started yelling
through the closed door of his apartment, Mason said, and the officers then
turned their attention to him.
According to Mason, the officers knew
that it was Crisp in the room because during their efforts to persuade him to
give up, one of the officers called out Crisp's first name.
By this time, two other city officers--
Patrolmen Mike Shaw and Jim Casey -- had arrived, Mason said. Dagley, Shaw and Jones were in the east-west
hall and Hammond (who lives in Shelbyville), Casey and Stephens, in the
north-south hall, said Lt. Jones, also spokesman for the Indiana State Police.
The officers spent several minutes
trying to talk Crisp out. The only
response they received was "some incoherent muttering," Mason said.
The officers stood silent for a moment
in the arms-width hall before Crisp let out another shouting outburst followed
by six shots fired rapidly behind his closed door, based on what reporters
could hear from hallway.
"We did everything possible to
talk him out," Jones recalled.
Inside Crisp's meagerly furnished
apartment are six apparent bullet holes in a closet door on the north side of
the room. Also, the south wall, which
adjoins the door leading out of the room, is peppered with what appear to be
more bullet holes.
After the six shots were fired,
officers kicked in the door and the opaque glass in the top part broke. Reporters then heard several shots, which
rang through the narrow hallways, apparently fired by the officers. Crisp then exited the room and turned his
rifle on Trooper Hammond.
"A slug passed so close to Trooper
Hammond's head that it was not a hand's width away from striking him,"
Jones recalled.
The officers then opened up, and one
was heard to say "he's (Crisp) down."
None of the officers was struck in the exchange.

A second
skeleton discovered
There is no evidence of a connection
between two human skeletons found since Friday within one-half mile of each
other on Barren River Road, according to Kentucky State Police.
Two hunters found the second skeleton
about 7:45 a.m. Sunday in a barn four miles north of Bowling Green.
The skeleton was found about one-half
mile north of the location of a skeleton discovered Friday in a wooded area on
Barren River Road.
The hunters stepped into a barn to get out
of the rain and found the decomposed body partially covered with hay, according
to Det. Benny Bowles.
The barn had not been used by the owner
for several years and is located on a farm that is not being used for planting,
Bowles said. The owner of the barn is
not a suspect, he added.
The skeleton has been tentatively
identified, but police are not releasing the name until there is a positive
identification, Bowles said.
State Forensic Anthropologist David
Wolf examined the skeleton and determined the cause of death to be gunshot
wounds. The skeleton was in the barn
about six months, Bowles said.
The skeleton was of a white man about
30 years old.
There is no suspect in the case, Bowles
said.
Police also have tentatively identified
the skeleton found Friday but are not releasing the name until positive
identification.
That skeleton of a man approximately 25
years old was found about 1:30 p.m. Friday by a man who was training his bird
dog.
It is believed to be the body of a man
reported missing in March 1978. No cause
of death has been determined.
There is no evidence to indicate the
two deaths are connected, Bowles said.

Warren County
Bodies Identified
BOWLING
GREEN -- Authorities have positively identified two skeletons found in
the Warren County area over the weekend.
The body discovered last Friday is that
of 24-year-old Michael Ray Gregory of Woodburn, Warren County Coroner J.C.
Kirby said Tuesday.
He said Gregory apparently died on the
same date he was reported missing, which was March 3, 1978. Gregory was identified by his dental records,
Kirby said, adding that the cause of death had not been determined.
Another skeleton, which was discovered
Sunday, was identified as Bobby Joe Dethridge, 29, of Bowling Green. Kirby said Dethridge had been reported
missing since May 7, 1980, and added that the cause of Dethridge's death was a
gunshot wound.
Gregory's skeleton was discovered in a
field just off the Barren River Road about four miles north of Bowling
Green. Two days later, a pair of hunters
discovered Dethridge's skeleton in a barn about a half mile from where
Gregory's skeleton was found.
There have been no arrests.

The death of Gene Gandy was included in a very long article about a mass
shooting in Texas. This is only part of
that article:
A Bloody Sunday
in Texas
-- Gunman Kills 5 in
Church
Daingerfield,
Texas
A heavily armed man dressed in battle
gear burst into a crowded church service yesterday, shouted "This is
war" and opened fire, killing five persons and wounding 10.
Authorities said the gunman, who was
scheduled to go on trial today on an incest charge, then went to a nearby fire
station and shot himself in the head with a .22 caliber pistol. Police said the suspect only grazed
himself. He was hospitalized in stable
condition in a Tyler hospital and later taken to a hospital in Galveston,
almost 300 miles away. He was moved because
the Galveston hospital has a criminal detention unit, a Tyler hospital official
said.
The gunman, Alvin Lee King III, 45, a
former math teacher at Daingerfield High School, allegedly tied up his wife
Gretchen, at their rural home outside Hughes Springs yesterday about 9 a.m. He
eventually made his way to the First Baptist Church, filled with about 300
worshippers, and opened fire about 11:30 a.m., authorities said.
Police said King was wearing Army
fatigues, a helmet and bulletproof jacket and carrying 300 rounds of
ammunition, an M-1 rifle with bayonet, an AR-15 rifle equipped with scope and
bayonet, the .22-caliber pistol and a .38 caliber pistol.
Church officials said King, described
by a former student as an atheist, had never attended the church and they were
uncertain why he chose First Baptist as his target. However, Morris County Attorney Bill Porter
said King had asked several members of the church, the largest in the town of
2600, to be character witness in his incest trial.
. . . Killed trying
to stop the gunman were City Councilman Kenneth Truitt, 50, who was hit in the
chest, and J.Y. (Red) McDaniel, about 55, of Lone Star, who was shot in the
head. Jennifer Linam, 7, Lone
Star, died at the church after being shot in the head and Thelma Richardson,
78, died of head and back wounds.
Gene Gandy, 50, died late last night at
Medical Surgical Hospital in Pittsburg, authorities said. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the
stomach.
. . . A total of seven persons were
treated at the Hospital of the Pines . . . .

Area man's

in California
probed
San Bernardino County, Calif.,
sheriff's deputies say they have no new leads in the Saturday knife slaying of
Paul L. Minear, 29, formerly of Akron and Atwater.
Minear, a carnival setup worker, had

Minear had gone with some of the
carnival workers to a bar to play pool.
He and a suspect in the case, a man about 22, walked out of the bar to a
parking lot across the street, where an argument and fight occurred. Minear was stabbed once in the chest.
Friends drove Minear by van to Bear
Valley Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis O'Rourke said
deputies are trying to learn the identity of the suspect.
