TACOMA -- Police combed Pierce County
today for a masked man who walked into a restaurant bar at 10 last night and
shot six persons, three of them fatally, authorities said.
Killed were Donald Wayne Williams, 41,
Steven Vincent Allen, 37, and Robert J. Cassiss, 51. Wounded were Bobby G. Knight, 39 of Lakewood;
Dale McCombs, 54, and Glen Vanzel, 58, both of Tacoma.
Two of the victims were killed
outright, and a third was wounded fatally.
The gunman reportedly went in a side
door to the bar area of the Yorktown Restaurant and fired eight shots. There were conflicting reports, however,
whether the man chose his victims or fired indiscriminately.
Wally Nordquist, manager of the
restaurant in the Lakewood area about 7 miles southwest of Tacoma, said the
gunman passed up some restaurant patrons and shot at others.
But Henry Supranowski, chief criminal
deputy in the Pierce County sheriff's department, said the man fired randomly.
Jim Hall, bartender on duty at the
time, said the man fired his rounds and was gone in less than 20 seconds. He said there were about 20 people in the bar
at the time.
Hall said the man knew the layout at
the bar and knew who he was firing at.
The people were regulars at the neighborhood bar and always seem to sit
in the same area, he added.
All three men who were killed were
employes or former employes of Western State Hospital, the state mental
institution, which is about a mile away.
Williams was a hospital attendant who
had worked in the mentally ill offenders unit since February. Cassiss, a five-year employe at Western
State, previously had worked in the mentally ill offenders ward. Allen left Western State in June, but
previously had worked in the mentally ill offenders unit.
None of the wounded was a hospital
employe. Of the wounded, Knight is a
vacuum-cleaner salesman, and Vanzel is retired from the Air Force.
Knight said he was sitting at the bar
and heard two explosions close to him.
Knight, who was shot in the face, was in stable condition at St.
Joseph's Hospital. Vanzel was in very
serious condition, and McCombs was in satisfactory condition, both at Madigan
General Hospital.
The weapon was believed to be a
.45-caliber pistol, Supranowski said.
Supranowski said the gunman was about 5
feet 9 inches and extremely slender. He
was wearing dark clothes. There are no
suspects.

Heavy Rain
Factor in Rural
Crash Fatal
to Local Woman
Nelline Sue Burch, 48, Route 12, was
killed this morning in a two-car collision on Road 650E at Road 100S.
Mrs. Burch, who resided on Elizabeth
Street in Eastridge Manor, worked afternoons and evenings as a part-time
district route manager in the circulation department at The Republic.
Emergency Medical Technicians with
Medic 1 said Mrs. Burch died on the way to Bartholomew County Hospital, but
doctors in the emergency room tried for 15 minutes to save her life. She suffered leg, head and abdominal injuries
in the accident.
Shelia Moenning,* 635 Jackson Park
Drive, Seymour, driver of the other car, suffered cuts, bruises and head
injuries. She was taken by Athens
Ambulance to the emergency room where she was being treated this morning.
The accident occurred about 8:20 a.m.
today in a heavy rain storm.
Bartholomew County Sheriff's Deputy
Keith Foster, who investigated, said Mrs. Burch was driving south on Road 650E
and stopped at a stop sign at Road 100S.
He said she pulled out into the path of the other car which struck the
Burch vehicle on the driver's side door.
Foster said Mrs. Burch was trapped
behind the wheel of her car for 15 minutes.
They said they used their "jaws of life" to free her.
Foster said visibility at the
intersection normally is good but that heavy rain at the time and the gray
color of the Moenning vehicle could have contributed to the accident. "There wasn't anything either driver
could do to avoid the collision once she pulled out into the
intersection," Foster said.
Mrs. Burch was born May 17, 1931. She formerly was assistant manager of the
Diana Shop which was in downtown Columbus.
She attended school in Washington, Ind.,
and was graduated from the high school there in 1948.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer,
who works at Reliance Electric Co., and a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Moir of
Columbus.
*Submitter's Note: In another obituary published in the Seymore
[Indiana] Tribune on July 14, 1979, the name of the other driver is given as

4 drownings over
weekend
by Sandi Collins, Times
Staff Writer
Drownings during weekend claimed the
lives of a brother and a sister in a Warren Township pond and two people in the
Ohio River.
Argie Hall Jr., 14, and his sister,
Donna Jean Hall, 13, of Marietta Rt. 4, had tied themselves together with a
rope to go frog-gigging Friday in a neighbor's pond when one of them got in too
deep and dragged the other to death, reported the Washington County Sheriff's
Department.
Matthew Newbanks, 15 of Little Hocking
Rt. 1, and Johnny Harold Barnhart, 26, of Guysville Rt. 1 drowned early Sunday
morning when a boat overturned in the Ohio River near Mustapha Island below
Parkersburg.
The parents of the brother and sister
had notified the sheriff's department about 7 p.m. Friday that the teenagers
had been missing from the home since about 2 p.m. Their bodies were recovered from a pond on
the nearby Hann* property about 9:45 p.m. by the Warren emergency squad. They were pronounced dead at the scene by
Washington County coroner Kenneth Owen, who ruled death by asphyxiation.
The other victims apparently were
picked up by a flat-bottom aluminum boat containing Barry Russell and J* Ann
Dotson, both of Coolville, and were heading to a party on an island between
Wood County, W. Va., and Athens County when the boat overturned and capsized,
said the Wood County Sheriff's Department.
Dotson and Russell swam to safety, but Newbank and Barnhart couldn't
make it, the sheriff's department said.
Newbank's body was pulled from the water a short time later, but it was
five hours until Barnhart's body was recovered.
Dr. Charles Barnhart, Wood County
coroner, ruled the deaths were due to drowning.
Submitter's Notes:
*The last letter in the right hand
column of my copy of this obituary was cut off all the way down. Most of the words were obvious, but since

Lattea,
Donald Franklin Lattea
Source: The Clarksburg [West Virginia] Exponent
Telegram; Sunday, 26 Aug 1979
The body of a young Harrison County man
was recovered from a Salem area dam late Saturday afternoon after he drowned
while swimming.
The Harrison County victim was
identified by State Police as Donald Franklin Lattea, 21, of Box 60, Salem.
Lattea, according to Trooper G. W.
Lemasters, drowned at approximately 2:50 p.m. Saturday in the Stonestreet Dam
near Salem with the body being recovered by Salem Volunteer Fire Department
members at about 3:55 p.m.
The cause of the drowning is not known,
Lemasters said, adding that the body was viewed by Harrison County Medical
Examiner Dr. Keith Pickens, who ruled the death to be accidental.
The trooper said his investigation shows
that Lattea dived from the shore line into the lake, which is approximately 15
feet deep, and came up once. He added
that the young man then dove in again and failed to resurface.
When Lattea failed to come up,
Lemasters continued, his brother, John Lattea, and friend,
Carl Thompson, dove in, but were unsuccessful in finding Donald Lattea,
the trooper continued.
Someone was sent to the Salem Volunteer
Fire Department, more than three miles away, in order to get help. Salem volunteers quickly began dragging operations
and were able to find the body in the area where Lattea had last been seen.
Lemasters was assisted in his investigation
by Troopers B. B. Flanagan and J. M. Manning.
Also aiding were the Reynoldsville and West Union volunteer fire departments.
Donald Franklin Lattea was born Jan.
15, 1958, at Clarksburg, a son of Junior Lewis and Ruby Fay Harper Lattea, who
survives [sic--survive] at Sawyers
Run.
In addition to his parents, he is

four sisters, Anna Ash of Sedalia, Barbara Swiger, Parkersburg, Cora Arnett,
