Death Cause
Remains Mystery
Blood Test
Results Awaited; Lawmen Treat
Case as Homicide
by Jack King
Staff
Writer
"We do not have a cause of death at this
time," Greene County Coroner Erwin Busiek said today following the autopsy
of a 19-year-old Springfield woman, whose nude body was found Monday afternoon
in a wooded area near Strafford.
The woman, Debra Leroy Barker, was
identified by authorities as a possible homicide victim, and investigations
continue. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Leroy Barker, 1718 North Ozark, she had been gone from home three days.
The Region II Major Case Squad was
activated to investigate the woman's death after Elmer Robinson, 29 of 3165
Rountree, spotted her body in an isolated area while he was hunting
blackberries. The man was walking in
woods about three-tenths of a mile west of the I-44 truck weigh station and
about 20* yards north of old U.S. 64* at 2 p.m.
Even though Greene County Sheriff's
Det. Charles Whitlow said there were numerous small bruises and marks, like
scratches, on the woman's body, Coroner Busiek said preliminary autopsy
findings revealed no severe obvious injuries, internal injuries, or
bleeding. Busiek said a blood sample
will be tested -- results won't be known for several days -- but there is
"little of a chance" the exact cause of death will be determined.
Whitlow said he thought the young woman
may have been dragged face down into the woods and left in that position, and
she may have been
strangled.
Coroner Busiek said it could not be
determined if the woman had been raped.
During a press conference this morning,
Deputy Sheriff Bert Miller said the major case squad had conducted 17
interviews in connection with the death.
He said investigation would continue, even though preliminary results of
the autopsy indicated no foul play.
Reportedly, there was no clothing on
the body, when it was discovered. Robinson contacted the state highway patrol,
who in turn called the sheriff's department.
A spokesman for the patrol said they are assisting in the investigation.
Miller said investigators are trying to
determine the woman's whereabouts since 7:30 p.m. Friday. That's when her mother, Mary, said she last
saw the 19-year-old wearing slacks with roses and a white, long-sleeved Western
shirt.
"She left and walked across the
street and said she was going to the Blue Ribbon, (a tavern at 338 East
Commercial," Mrs. Barker said.
A young man, whose name the sheriff's
office would not release, said he had been with her Friday. The man reportedly was the woman's boyfriend.
Mrs. Barker said her daughter
frequently went "to the lake" on weekends and returned home Sunday
evening, "but I felt something was wrong this time. When she didn't come in by 7 or 8 Sunday
night I began to worry. Leroy, my
husband, said something must be wrong."
Mr. Barker, after being contacted by
officers at 7:30 p.m. Monday, said he identified the body. Miller said he did not know how detectives
identified the body and located the family.
Barker noted that she had three tattoos, a "DB" inked on the right shoulder,
"DC" on the left shoulder and a star between two fingers, and thought
those marks helped officers trace the family.
Mrs. Barker said her daughter attended
Central High School without graduating and was doing housework for a friend of the
family, Mrs. Helen Glidewell, who lives at the corner of Ozark and Pacific.
"She was a real good girl,"
she added.
The young woman had two children, John,
2 1/2 years old, and Cheyenne, 1 1/2, and Mrs. Barker said she would take care
of them.
Mrs. Barker has a 17-year-old son,
Ricky, in the Navy and the family was attempting Friday to contact him through
the Red Cross. She said her son's ship
left Japan recently and she did not know where he was.

Cause of
Death
Is Undetermined
The cause of death of a 19-year-old
Springfield girl whose body was found Monday near Strafford may never be known
because of inconclusive autopsy results and the difficulty of pinpointing the
cause through blood tests, according to Greene County coroner Erwin Busiek.
Busiek said Thursday an autopsy that
morning failed to indicate the cause of death and that a blood sample will be
tested in Texas but the results won't be known for several days.
Busiek added that there is "little
of a chance" that the exact cause of death of Debra Leroy Barker will be
determined.
The young woman, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Leroy Barker, 1718 North Ozark, had been gone from home since Friday night
and her nude body was found Monday in a wooded area near Strafford.
The Region II Major Case Squad is still
considering the death a homicide and is investigating.
Busiek said preliminary autopsy
findings revealed no severe obvious injuries, internal injuries or
bleeding. He said it could not be
determined if the woman had been raped.
Busiek noted that Tuesday's autopsy was
one of those rare ones that fails to give authorities
any clues about a death.
The coroner said testing of blood
samples may determine if the blood contained any drugs, poisons, or intoxicants
but he added that the number of substances that could be tested for are
"limitless and that the chance of revealing any one substance that might
figure into the death is slim.
Meanwhile, Greene County Deputy Sheriff
Bert Miller told reporters Tuesday night that the Major Case Squad still
considers the death a homicide.
"We don't have anything to prove
otherwise. The tests (autopsy), so far
as we know, are inconclusive, and we have not received any word back from the
coroner about the cause of death."
Pressed about whether the Squad will
continue to work, Miller said, "I'm sure the Major Case Squad will
continue to work until they come to a conclusion on their part."
Asked what other avenues officers have
for establishing the cause of death in the event the blood tests are
inconclusive, Miller replied, "I'd rather not say at this time."
Miller noted, however, that the Squad
has traced the victim's whereabouts up to Saturday morning.
Miss Barker was a lifelong resident of
Springfield.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Leroy Barker; a son, John Cecil, of the home; a daughter, Cheyenne, also
of the home; five brothers, Dale Cantrell, Los Angeles, Calif., Ricky Barker
stationed with the U.S. Navy, and Lynn Cantrell, Deland Barker and Kenneth
Barker, all of the home; a sister, Mrs. Linda Ganzer, Grovespring; maternal
grandfather, Lynn McDaniel, 1718 North Ozark; and paternal grandfather, William
Barker of Grand Acres Rest Home.
Greenlawn will announce the
arrangements.

Autopsy
Mishandled, Says Trundle
Captain
Doesn't Believe Woman's
Death a Homicide
The
Greene County Sheriff's office no longer believes the death of a 19-year-old
Springfield woman was a homicide.
According to Sheriff's Capt. Ed Trundle, Debra Leroy Barker, whose nude
body was found in a wooded area near Strafford July 14, probably strangled or
suffocated.
Trundle
said blood samples taken from her body showed her blood had a .21 per cent
blood alcohol reading and contained traces of a mild, long-lasting sleeping
pill.
The lab
report noted the combination wasn't enough to cause death, but could have
caused unconsciousness at the time of death.
Trundle,
in announcing the test results Thursday morning, charged the autopsy had been
"mishandled." Greene County Coroner Erwin Busiek denied the charge.
"The autopsy was not thorough or complete. It could have been established (when the
autopsy was run) if she had been strangled." Trundle said now it is too
late to find out.
The
woman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Barker, 1718 North Ozark, was missing for
about three days before her body was found.
Her body was nude and it apparently had been dragged to the place where
it was discovered by a man who was hunting blackberries.
Trundle
said the sheriff's office was not treating the death of the woman as a
homicide. He theorized that "she
probably died somewhere and was taken out and dumped." He said it was possible whoever she was with
when she died panicked and dumped her body.
In his
charge that the autopsy was mishandled, Trundle noted that the woman's throat
wasn't examined to see if she was strangled or suffocated, although her lungs
were examined.
"We
needed the cooperation from all medical personnel, but we didn't get it,"
Trundle said about the autopsy.
Coroner
Busiek Thursday contended that "it (the autopsy) was done properly,
exactly as other autopsies are performed.
There was nothing different or unusual about this autopsy except that
there was nothing to find physically."
"I looked at the body at the scene
and didn't see any evidence of strangulation," Dr. Busiek said.
Pathologist Dr. Fred Coller, who actually performed the autopsy, stated
that he also examined the neck.
"There was no evidence of strangulation at all," said Dr.
Coller. He would make no further
comments.
Dr.
Busiek Thursday reiterated his earlier statements that "the girl met her
death as a result of an overdose of drugs, alcohol or a combination of these
things. Whether or not there was any
criminal act, I simply don't know.
"I
think it is entirely possible that if a person's ability to breathe is
suppressed sufficiently by sedatives and alcohol, it certainly would take very
little extra force or effort to prevent that person from breathing
altogether. It is possible the force
would not be detectable because it would be so minimal."

Two accidents
claim three lives
Three
people died and two others are in hospitals as a result of accidents on area
roads Sunday.
Dead are
Debra S. Snyder, 15, of 940 Lawrence Rd., who was killed when she was thrown
from a motorcycle; William Chrismer, 20, of Wapokoneta and Cheryl Kline [sic--Cline],*
22, of Hume who both died in a two-car vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
Mrs.
Kline's husband, Larry, was listed in critical condition today with spine and
chest injuries in the intensive care unit at St. Rita's Hospital according to a
hospital spokesman. Kenneth Bailey, 707 Turner, who was the driver of the
motorcycle upon which the Snyder girl was riding, was listed as fair today with
multiple bumps and bruises and a concussion at Lima Memorial Hospital.
According
to the Lima post of the state highway patrol, Bailey was driving his motorcycle
south on County Road 307A about four tenths of a mile south of the
Allen-Auglaize line at 5:10 p.m. when it struck the rear of a car operated by
the Snyder girl's brother, Dennis E., 18.
Police said
that Bailey was following the Snyder car which slowed to make a turn. Snyder noticed in his rear view mirror that
Bailey was too close and tried to pull forward quickly, but Bailey's motorcycle
smashed into the rear of the car throwing Bailey and the Snyder girl over the
roof of the vehicle.
According to Shawnee Township Police Chief Page Goodenough, who refused
to release preliminary details of the accident until 10 a.m. today, the
Chrismer vehicle was southbound on Sellers Road, while the Klines were
proceeding east on Hume Road. The two
vehicles collided at the intersection around 3:55 a.m.
Born on
Nov. 18, 1952 in Lima, Mrs. Kline was the daughter of John A. and Argyle
Jackson Gross of 1529 Neubrecht Rd. She

of 5124 Norfolk-Hume Rd.; and her maternal grandmother, Winnie Jackson of 824
E. 2nd.

Born on
March 15, 1955, in Lima, Chrismer was the son of Harold and Sandra Shaw
