Mishap
claims life in Newport
(by Jim Bartholow,
Times Staff Writer)
A two-vehicle mishap in Newport on U.S.
50-A Saturday night killed Kenneth R. Binegar, 49,
Newport Rt. 1, and sent five others to Marietta Memorial Hospital where they
were admitted in fair condition.
Still listed in fair condition today
are two daughters, Kyla M., 8, and Carey
L.*
Another daughter, Christina L., 9*, was
transferred from Marietta Memorial Hospital to St. Joseph Hospital,
Parkersburg, where her condition today is described as "fair."
Binegar's
wife, Verna M., was admitted to the hospital Saturday night, but was discharged
from the hospital yesterday.
Also admitted and listed in fair
condition is a passenger from the other vehicle involved - Donna Cline, 18,
Marietta Rt. 1. The driver of the second
vehicle, Lanny Howell, 18, Rinard Mills Rt. 2, was
treated and released from the hospital Saturday night.
According to the highway patrol report,
Binegar was the driver of a recreational vehicle that
was pulling from the Newport Foodland at approximately 9:07 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle pulled into the path of a late
model blue auto, driven by Howell. The
car was traveling north on U.S. 50-A at the time of the mishap.
The accident report states that Binegar's vehicle crossed in front of the car. Apparently, Binegar
was trying to get to County 25, which intersects U.S. 50-A at the Foodland.
After a preliminary investigation, the
highway patrol has determined that seat belts were not in use in either of the
vehicles involved.
Residents of the area recall hearing
only a loud crash with no screech of tires prior to the mishap. According to the accident report, Howell
attempted to avoid hitting the Binegar vehicle by
going left of center. The car slammed
into the Binegar vehicle at the driver's door. Both vehicles were carried from the road over
a concrete catch basin cover and into the parking lot of Abicht's
market on U.S. 50-A. The Binegar vehicle flipped over on its top, while the blue car
continued a short distance further, into a guardrail erected in front of the
market near the highway.
Market owner Dean Abicht
stated that he heard the crash and that his first reaction was to go to the
phone and call for help. Another
resident of the area, Mrs. Henry Nester, stated that she heard the crash from
her home and then heard a woman's voice cry out, "Oh God help me, please
help me."
A relative staying with Mrs. Nester,
Marcie Schneider, ran to the home phone for help. Mrs. Nester lives three houses from the
corner intersection, on County 25, which is Greene St., in Newport.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Dean Abicht came into the parking lot, which was empty at the
time of the mishap from the market. The
market closes at 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
She remembers seeing three girls’ bodies in the parking lot, with one
girl thrown more than 100 feet from where the totally demolished vehicles came
to rest.
Mrs. Abicht
also spotted another daughter of the Binegars under a
nearby car and the third daughter in the open, badly bruised, apparently hit by
a flying part of the Binegar vehicle's broken
tailgate.
Mrs. Abicht
went back into the store immediately to get sweaters or anything she could find
to keep the victims warm until help arrived.
Mrs. Nester could see part of the wreckage from her porch and she also
rushed into her home to get blankets, rugs and sweaters for the small victims.
Mrs. Abicht
later stated, "They took my sweater and my husband's sweater with the
girls to the hospital, but it doesn't matter.
We wanted to keep them warm."
After making her emergency call, the
Schneider woman rushed to the accident scene to help, stating, "I remember
when I had a bad accident and no one helped."
Both the Abichts
and Mrs. Nester complained that an excessive amount of time elapsed before an
emergency operator could be contacted.
The call from the Nester woman's home took 19 rings to be answered,
according to her. Soon after the contact
was made, however, members of the Newport Volunteer Fire Dept. arrived. Local doctor Larry Gale was also summoned to
the accident scene. Cars from the
highway patrol, sheriff's department and an ambulance service arrived soon
after the fire deparment came on the scene.
The highway patrol is still
investigating the mishap. At this time
it is not known if excessive speed was a factor in the accident which occurred
under a yellow caution light in the middle of Newport. The speed limit is 40 miles per hour in the
village on U.S. 50-A. It is a reduced
limit for cars coming into the village from both the north and south, where it
is 60 miles per hour.
Mrs. Abicht
states that the yellow caution light doesn't "really slow cars down
much," especially drivers who use the highway frequently.
After all the victims had been taken
from the wreckage, Mrs. Nester reminded herself, "It could have been any one of us crossing that road going
for milk,"
At approximately 10:30 Saturday night
Mrs. Abicht bleakly stared through the front door of
the market, looking in the direction of but not at the twisted and bloody
wreckage. She recalled that the Binegars had been customers of the market for many years.

FATAL ACCIDENT--The vehicle

Newport Rt. 1, who was killed in the Saturday night mishap. Four
members of his family were also injured.

Mills. The Howell car ran into the Binegar vehicle as it crossed U.S. 50A in Newport. (Times photo)
