CALDWELL -- Two first-degree murder
charges were filed Tuesday afternoon after a hit-skip auto struck and killed
two persons Monday night on Ohio 513 in northern Noble County. Two other
persons were injured in the incident.
Named in the affidavit was a
woman identified as Betty K Barrett, also known as Betty Hashman,
25, of South Chestnut street., Barnesville.
Dead at the scene were Mrs.
Frances Mellinger Mercer, 40, of Harper Ridge, Woodsfield and Mrs. Phyllis
Alberta Barrett, 39, of Quaker City Route 2, whose body was undiscovered until
early Tuesday when patrolman returned to the scene. The two Barrett women are
not related.
Injured were Miss Bonnie Barrett, 19,
daughter of Mrs. Phyllis Barrett; and Alton Baker, 34, of Quaker City Route 2.
They were both listed in good condition Tuesday at Barnesville Hospital.
The Cambridge Post of the Highway
Patrol was in charge of the investigation which led to filing of the murder
charges. Authorities said persons at the scene claimed the auto was swerved
toward the victims. The affidavit was filed through the office of Noble County
Prosecutor Lucian Young Jr.
The Barrett woman charged had
been released earlier in the day on $1,000 bond posted on a charge of leaving
the scene of an accident. The murder charges were filed later in the day, and
Noble County Sheriff Richard Fogle and a Highway
Patrol officer re-arrested her at her home last night. She was being held in
the Noble County jail without bond. She was scheduled to appear in Noble County
court at 10 a.m. today for arraignment.
Patrolmen said the four victims
had apparently left their auto parked along the highway, and were standing
alongside the road when struck. The driver abandoned the auto a short distance
away and fled. The Barrett woman was arrested a short time later.
Scene of the accident was between
Quaker City and Barnesville.

I cannot say and I will not say
That he is dead, He is just away;
With a cheery smile and a wave of the
hand
He wandered into an unknown land.

And he left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since he lingered
there,
Think of him still as the same I say
He is not dead, He is just away.

Last
Night On Job,
Man Slain In
Seville
SEVILLE
-- It was the last night that Kenneth Kinney worked the early-morning shift at
the Seville Mobil station--business was slow between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. and
they were closing the station overnight.
But at 2
a.m. Monday, the 24-year-old Lodi father of two was slain by a gunman in an $80
holdup.
"We
just found him shot," said Norman Samples of Lodi, owner of the station at
Ohio 3 and Interstate 80.
SAMPLES
went to the station after passing motorists notified
sheriff's deputies that Kinney's body was lying by the gasoline pumps. A billfold chained to his pocket had been
emptied of the $80, but a personal billfold containing an equal amount had not
been taken.
"He
apparently went out to a car and leaned over to the window," Samples
said. "He was shot in the head.
"It
was the last night we were going to run the third shift. He was going to start working from 5 p.m. to
midnight."
KINNEY
had taken the service station job about three months ago after a period of
unemployment.
His
younger brother, Richard, already worked part-time at the station. When Samples learned that Kenneth needed a
job, he hired him to experiment with the early-morning shift.
Kinney
had done a three-year Army stint, after Cloverleaf High School, then went to work for the National Aeronautic
and Space Administration (NASA) in Cleveland as a trades apprentice. NASA personnel said Kinney quit the program
for "personal reasons" last February.
KINNEY,
of 206 Prospect st., had a daughter, Angela, 3, and
son, Jeffrey, 1.
He also
leaves his wife, Donna; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kinney, Chatham; four
brothers, Danny, Seville, and Terry, Richard and Robert, all at home, and sister Susan, at home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at
the Parker funeral home in Lodi, where friends may call Wednesday afternoon and
evening. Burial will be in Chatham
cemetery.

5 killed as
blast rocks church annex
by Bob Hollback and Steve Hemmelgarn
Marietta’s First Baptist Church, in
mourning after the death of Pastor Donald Duncan, was rocked by a multiple
tragedy yesterday morning when a boiler exploded, sending tons of concrete,
metal and scalding water into a Sunday school room beneath, killing a teacher
and four teenagers and injuring 14 others.
Dead are:
Heather Dawson, 15, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Hubert Dawson, 309 Lawton Rd.
Richard Morris, 14, son of Mrs. Sara Morris,
213 Summit St.
Gary Holley, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Holley, 104 High St.
Carol Joy, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Joy, 909 Washington St.; and
Mike Murphy, 31, Marietta Rt. 1, the
class teacher.
The tragic blast at Fourth and Putnam
streets also injured 14 persons, eight of whom were admitted, with the other
six treated and released.
Church services began at 9:45 a.m. and a
memorial service for the Rev. Mr. Duncan was conducted by the Rev. Louis Eckols, area Baptist minister, Byron Bangert,
intern pastor, and church laymen—William Hickman, Norman Schwartz, William
Mason and Mike Murphy.
At 11 a.m. Sunday School
classes began and two of those laymen--Hickman and Murphy, went into the educational
unit to conduct their classes.
Twenty-eight minutes later the church was struck by another,
and this time, multiple tragedy.
An explosion in the gas-fired boiler in
the educational unit ripped out walls, floors and ceilings, and dumped tons of
debris on Mike Murphy's ninth and tenth graders. He and four of them were killed.
Eight
Hospitalized
[Submitter's note: There were seven paragraphs here about those
hospitalized that I did not type.]
The explosion centered in the boiler
room of the education building of the church, located directly north of the
sanctuary. All those killed were in a
ninth and 10th grade Sunday School room in the
basement, directly below the boiler room.
The bombed-out annex was a three story
structure, with a basement, a second floor, on which the boiler room was
located, and a top floor.
Debris
Falls Onto Victims
The explosion took out a huge section
of the floor of the boiler room and an adjacent nursery, and the floor
overhead, bringing down tons of concrete, steel, and hot water on the victims
in the basement.
Counts gained from Sunday School attendance sheets showed that 13 teenagers in
addition to Murphy were in the room when the explosion ripped through the
13-year-old structure.
The room adjacent to the boiler room, a
nursery for two and three year olds, was devastated, but parts of the floor
held up, and the three children in the room were only slightly injured,
although they were buried under rubble.
All were treated and released from Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Firemen, city police, sheriff's
deputies, highway patrolmen, army reserve engineers, and trained rescue
personnel fought for three hours through literally tons of debris to remove the
victims.
In most cases those buried were located
long before rescue workers could dig them out from under the twisted metal,
shattered cement, and concrete block with the use of jacks and a wrecker.
First work was done with picks,
shovels, sledge hammers, and bare hands, but huge sections of concrete from the
two collapsed floors thwarted quick rescue, and were even too heavy to be
jacked up.
9 Trapped for
a Time
Nine persons were originally trapped in
the mass of metal pipes and exploded concrete, three of whom were two-year-olds
in the second floor nursery, who were immediately pulled to safety by men in
the church.
A fourth person, reportedly a teenager,
was pulled from the basement by firemen moments after they arrived on the
scene. The last five were dead by the
time firemen and rescue workers could get to them.
The eight other students in the
basement Sunday School room apparently escaped under
their own power, although six of them were sufficiently injured to be admitted
to the two city hospitals.
[Submitter's Note: This is a very lengthy article. 31 paragraphs are omitted at this point. Also omitted here was the adjoining very lengthy
article about "Eyewitnesses describe tragedy." ]
Victims
of Sunday's explosion
Joint funeral services will be held at
1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church for three of the four teenagers
killed yesterday--Heather Dawson, Gary Holley and Richard Morris. Doudna and McClure

Fire Kills 6
BIDWELL, Ohio (UPI) - A fire that
destroyed a two-story, seven-room house in this secluded southeastern Ohio hill
town Sunday morning claimed its sixth victim today. Fire officials speculated that gasoline
thrown into a coal stove may have been the cause of the blaze.
Killed were Mr. and Mrs. Burt Yost;
their son Bobby, 17, daughter Thelma, 24; and two neighbors, Jeff Dobbins 16,
and Paul Kent Jr., 14. Mrs. Yost died
today in a Gallipolis hospital.
Another son of the Yost's, Cecil, 21,
was burned critically in the fire and taken to Holzer
Medical Center in Gallipolis.
Volunteer firemen who responded to the
Sunday morning blaze at the home of Burt Yost said an explosion apparently
preceded the swiftly spreading flames that leveled the house killing Yost, 68,
two of his children and two neighbor children.
Mrs. Luella Yost, 53, and a son were
found in the family car, critically burned, apparently trying to drive away to
seek help and treatment.
"The boy * was taken to the
hospital heard a loud noise before the fire," Middleport Fire Chief Thomas
Darst said.
"Everything was burned to ashes almost by the time we got
there."
The first neighbor to spot the fire was
Walter Jenkins, who lives less than a mile from the Yosts
and was a former occupant of the destroyed dwelling. His attention was drawn by the smoke and he
identified the house with his binoculars.
"He found the survivors sitting in
the car in front of the burning house and ran to a nearby home to call for an
ambulance.
"Yost apparently was trying to
build up the fire in the stove by throwing gasoline into it," Chief Darst said, after probing through the ruins.
He said the bodies of two boys were
found near where a window had been.
"They apparently were trying to get to a window where they were
overcome," he said.
Two other bodies were found at the
center, where the stove was situated, he said, and the fifth victim was found
at the topposite [sic--opposite] side of the
house.
The Middleport fire department
contracts to provide fire assistance to several communities such as Bidwell,
which is a run of 15 to 18 miles, Darst said.
"Everything was on the ground when
we got here." Darst said.
The neighbor boys were believed to have
arrived to visit with the Yosts shortly before the
fire. They each lived about one mile
away
