Betts, Rosa Elizabeth Betts nee Crawford

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, 1966

LKP#4

Once again the Grim Reaper Death has entered our midst and taken from us our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor and friend.

Rosa Elizabeth Betts, daughter of Greenberry, and Barbara (Pfalzgraf) Crawford, was born near Lewisville, Ohio on August 4, 1886, and departed this life Thursday morning 4:15 p.m. June 9, 1966 at Barnesville Hospital at the age of 79 years, ten months, and five days.

She was united in marriage with Frank Betts on March 13, 1906 and to this union ten children were born.

Her husband, Frank and five children, Clarence, George, Vearl, Woodrow and Sara, preceded her in death.

Those left to mourn her sad departure are two sons and three daughters, Elbert, of Lewisville; Mrs. Raymond (Lela) Christman, of Barnesville; Mrs. Ermie (Loiuse) Morris, of Woodsfield; John J., of Mansfield, and Mrs. LaVern (Mary Eva) Christman, of Columbus; one sister, Mrs. Mary Goodhart, of Summerfield; one brother, Thomas Uppole, of Quaker City; sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Mrs. Betts was very active until the last six months of her life. All that loving hands and medical skill could do was done but to no avail and God called her home to be with him in the land where is no sorrowing, no suffering or death when the dead in Christ shall arise.

She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Betts was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and neighbor, ever mindful of the needs of others and ever willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed and add a ray of sunshine to make someone’s life brighter and happier for having known her. Thus she will be sadly missed by everyone.

A precious one from us has gone,

A voice we loved is stilled,

A place is vacant in the home

                       Which never can be filled.

Jones was running a Memorial Day fireworks show for patrons of the East Drive-In Theatre, 600 South Avenue when the mishap occurred.

Dennis Beresh, his brother-in-law and helper, said Jones was behind a fence setting off the serial bombs about 11:15 p.m. Beresh was standing about ten feet from him to keep spectators from getting too near the display.

He said Jones had just dropped one of the bombs, one with a shorter fuse than usual into a cast iron tube and lit it. He said Jones then bent over the tube and the bomb went off.

Jones was taken to Akron City Hospital where he died about 2 a.m. today. Beresh said Jones had handled fireworks for the theater twice last year.

Akron Police Patrolman W. T. Evans, who was attending the show, said he saw a brilliant flash from behind the fence and then the serial bombs stopped.

Jones, of  93 Olalla Avenue was employed at Brown-Graves Lumber Company. Beresh lives at 65 Olalla Avenue.

Services are being handled by Scott Funeral Home.

Sad Sam Jones Dies at 73, Pitched 22 Years
Woodsfield, Ohio (AP)
Sad Sam Jones, who shared with Cy Young the record for longevity among major league baseball pitchers of all time, is dead.  The 73-year-old Jones was stricken here Wednesday at his home where he had lived since leaving baseball for good after a brief stint as a minor league relief hurler in 1947.
Jones would have been 74 in 20 more days, and also would have marked his golden anniversary with his wife, Edith, the same day.  Sad Sam enter the major leagues with Cleveland in 1914 and pitched through the 1935 season, chalking up 22 consecutive years. Only he and the great Young of Newcomerstown, Ohio, pitched that many years consecutively in the majors. All of Jones' pitching was in the American League.  Jones, in addition to Cleveland, pitched for New York, St. Louis, Washington, Chicago, and Boston. He had a lifetime record in the majors of 228-216, including 36 shutouts, and a no-hitter on Sept. 4, 1923, defeating the old Philadelphia Athletics 2-0.
While Jones' career was impressive, it also was marked by disappointment.  For one thing, he pitched in six games in four World series without winning a game. While with the Yankees in the 1923 World Series, he tossed a four-hitter at the New York Giants only to lose 1-0 on a fourth-inning home run by Casey Stengel.
Jones set two records of dubious distinction for the Yankees in 1925. He gave up 127 earned runs that year while posting a record of 15-21. The earned run mark and the 21 games lost stand today in the Yankees' record books.  Many athletes have used the nickname Sad Sam, but Paul Turner of Woodsfield, a long-time friend, said Jones was the original. "But he wasn't sad. There wasn't anything sad about him.... I don't know where he got the nickname," said Turner.
The family did not disclose the cause of death.  In addition to the widow, Jones is survived by two sons, Paul, of Erie, PA, and George, of New York City. Jones became the president of the Woodsfield Savings and Loan Co. after returning to his home town 19 years ago.  Funeral services will be held here Saturday.

Killed     Man     With     Baseball     Bat

Attempting     Robbery,     Boy     Admits

by Rick Johnson

A 16-year-old Indianapolis boy was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder yesterday after police said he admitted the slaying of an Eastside man and implicated a 17-year-old friend.

Police previously had believed the victim died from a fall.

Carl E. King, 20 South Rural Street, was arrested by Detective Sgt. Leonard F. Dehn in connection with the death of William Kehoe, 45, 1412 East Washington Street.

Police said King admitted in a written statement that Kehoe was struck on the head with a baseball bat during a robbery attempt last June 29.

Police said King implicated James G. Haag, 17 South Tuxedo Street, who so far has signed no written statement.  Haag already was under arrest on other charges.

SGT. DEHN said the first tipoff in the case came from Haag Saturday when he sent word to police that he "wanted to talk to someone."

"His conscience was bothering him," Sgt. Dehn said, "and he told me he thought that if he told me about the attack on Kehoe that it would help him get his bond cut so he could get out of jail."

In an oral statement to Sgt. Dehn made Saturday, Haag told of a plot to rob Kehoe on June 29.

Sgt. Dehn said that Haag told him the pair believed Kehoe carried large sums of money.

HAAG  TOLD  Dehn that King took the baseball bat and both of them crept around the side of Kehoe's home and found him sleeping on a chair on the front porch.  King allegedly struck the sleeping man with the bat, according to Haag's verbal statement, Sgt. Dehn said.

Dehn said Haag told him that Kehoe jumped out of the chair and he and King fled before they could obtain any money.

In King's written statement, King admitted his part in the robbery attempt, Sgt. Dehn said.

King was picked up by police on the strength of Haag's verbal statement.  Sgt. Dehn said King was fully advised of his constitutional rights to counsel before making his statement but said he didn't want a lawyer.

HAAG IS IN THE Marion County Jail awaiting trial in Criminal Court, Division 2, on charges of conspiring to commit a felony while armed and vehicle taking.  His bonds total $10,000.  Haag will be questioned further by Dehn today.

At 10:45 p.m. June 29, patrolman Mark Crockett was sent to Griffin's Tavern,1414 East Washington Street, to give first aid to an injured man.  When Crockett arrived he found Kehoe in a dazed condition suffering a gash on the head.

Crockett said he questioned the victim who was only able to tell him that he had been sitting on his porch and the next thing he knew he woke up on the floor.  Crockett said he bandaged Kehoe's wound and the victim was taken to the Marion County General Hospital by some friends in the tavern.

"HE WAS NEVER able to tell anyone what happened to him." Crockett said.

Police learned that Kehoe, an employe of the defunct Hygrade Corporation, tried to leave the hospital after he received treatment, but collapsed on the way out.  Further examination disclosed a skull fracture and cranial hemorrhage.

        "King was a pretty mixed up kid," Dehn said . . . . *

*Submitter's Note:  There are another 12 paragraphs in this article about the two boys.  Pictures of the boys and of Mr. Kehoe were included in the article.  Below is Mr. Kehoe's obituary that appeared in the paper months earlier.

Edinburg*    Man     Killed     on     31

A  72-year-old Edinburg* man, reportedly on his way to Columbus to pick up a Social Security check, was fatally injured about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in a 2-car crash on Road 31 at the south edge of Taylorsville.

Dead on arrival at Bartholomew county hospital was Floyd Pope, 72, Edinburg,* thrown from his 1950 Chevrolet to the pavement on the north-bound passing lane of Road 31 at the south entrance to Taylorsville.  He died of massive chest injuries.

Driver of the second car was Alonzo M. Morris, 50, Franklin resident employed at the Vernco corporation here.  He escaped injury.

The death was the first this year in Bartholomew county traffic.

State Police Troopers Paul Jewett and Ronald Miller said Mr. Pope, driving south from Taylorsville, started across the northbound lane to go south to Columbus on Road 31 when his car collided with the northbound 1964 Oldsmobile of Mr. Morris, whose car was in the passing lane.

Mr. Morris was on his way home, Trooper Jewitt said.

Mr. Pope, who was retired, was living with a son, Herbert Pope of Edinburg.*

It was reported by Blue River products company at Edinburg* that Mr. Pope was in the habit of riding with his son, a semi-trailer truck driver for the company.  The elder Mr. Pope was not employed by the company, however.

Witness told troopers the Morris car was going about 55 miles an hour.  Traffic in the right lane was signaling to turn  right to Taylorsville, they said.

The right front of the Morris car met the left front of Mr. Pope's car.  It was believed Mr. Pope was thrown out as the cars rebounded after colliding.  The Pope car went to the right, stopping on the pavement at the right berm, while the Morris car skidded into the median strip.  Mr. Morris was not injured and was not charged.

Damage to the Morris car was $800.  The Pope car was a total loss.

Road 31 traffic was diverted through Taylorsville.

Trooper Miller, on patrol, came on the accident before being notified by the Seymour post.  He estimated his arrival at "not more than five minutes after the accident."  "It's awful to drive up on one that way," he said.

The accident was the first fatal accident in the county in 1966 and the first since last Dec. 11.

Dr. Bernard Grangier, deputy county coroner, performed an autopsy on the body at the hospital Wednesday night.  The autopsy pinpointed the chest injuries as the cause of death.  Mr. Pope also had head injuries.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Pope will be announced  Friday by Norman funeral home at Hope.

A native of Shelby county, Mr. Pope lived most of his life in the Hope community, and since the 1958 death of his wife, the former Goldie Drake, made his home with his children.  He had worked as a farm laborer.

Survivors are four sons, Herbert and Emil Pope of Edinburg,* Ralph Pope of California and Robert Pope of Indianapolis; five daughters, Mrs. Bill Hoesman of Route 3, Mrs. Martin Ward and Mrs. Walter Taylor of Columbus and Mrs. Milo Woods and Mrs. Lloyd Thompson of Clifford; a sister, Mrs. Lona Campbell of Hope and 39 grandchildren.

The state traffic toll for 1966 stands at [sic?] at  least 230, compared with 191 a year ago.  Twenty-four persons died in Bartholomew county accidents last year.

Services for Mrs. Wilson Held April 2

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 2, 1966, for Mrs. Wesley A. (Ethel Marie) Wilson, 81, at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Harlem.  She passed away in a Havre hospital at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30th.

Rev. R. J. Anderson officiated at the services.  Vocal music was beautifully rendered by Ms. Omer Nelson, accompanied by Mrs. Victor Goldsmith at the organ.  Pall bearers, all nephews of Mrs. Wilson were Mike (Clarence), Bill and Floyd Miller, Pete Goodheart, Dale Shupe and Earl McCracken.  Honorary pallbearers were other nephews:  Tom, Larry, Howard, Dan, Jack, Jay, Milton and Leslie Miller; Jack and Maurice Goodwill; Vince and Swede Goodheart.  Interment was in the Harlem cemetery

Ethel Marie Wilson was born Jan. 6, 1885, in Monroe County, Ohio, to Calvin and Mary Belle Devore.  When she was two years old, her father passed away and she and her mother made their home with her maternal grandparents, Amos and Margaret Mobberly of Ohio.  When Ethel was seven, her mother remarried and the family moved to North Dakota where she grew to womanhood and received her education.

She was a graduate of Mayville Teachres College of Mayville, N.D. and taught school for six years in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Among her memoirs were many treasured evidences of the esteem in which she was held by school  personnel during her school years and teaching career.  Her genuine love for children which, no doubt, contributed to her excellence as a teacher, remained with her throughout her life, and many a youngster (three generations of them) sat in wide-eyed wonder as she read to them and made fairy tales come to life.

On January 27, 1909, she was united in holy matrimony at Solway, Minnesota  to Wesley A. Wilson, member of a prominent Minnesota family.  To this union were born two children, a son and a daughter.  The family moved to Montana in 1918, with the intention of filing on a homestead.  Finding no land to their liking, they purchased a home in Harlem.  Here Mr. Wilson was employed by the Ditch Company, and Mrs. Wilson opened a maternity home.  She was known for her hospitality, and many a teamster from the north in the early days found her home a haven of warmth and good hot meals.

She joined the United Brethren church (now Evangelical United Brethren) soon after her arrival here, and was a faithful attendant until her fatal illness.  She held various offices over the years in her church work, one of which was that of Sunday School Superintendent, a post she filled for some seventeen years.

Preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and one brother, she leaves to mourn her passing her son Gerald of Harlem, her daughter Glennabelle Richards of Havre; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and two brothers, Henry and Clyde Miller, both of Harlem.  She also leaves a host of friends who cannot help but feel berift [sic – bereft], as the charm of her graciousness and refinement are qualities which are rarely found.
