THREE DIE
AS CAR STRIKES
POLE ON FREDERICA
2 Owensboro
Women Killed In
Accident
Three persons were killed and another
injured seriously in a shattering wreck at the intersection of Frederica Street
and Tamarack Road at 8:35 p.m. last night.
The car containing two Fort Campbell
soldiers and two Owensboro girls clipped a car turning off Frederica Street and
smashed into a steel light pole; smashing the car and throwing two of the
passengers from 300 to 400 feet away from the point of impact.
Coroner James H. Davis, Jr. identified
the victims as:
Mrs. Mary Woolsey Barnes, 16, 1680
E. 11th Street
Nancy Ballard, 18, of 705 Hall
Street
Pfc. Robert Gunn, 21, of Columbus,
Ohio who is attached to the 553rd Engineer Group, FB, at Fort
Campbell.
The injured man was Robert A. Panchisin, 20, of Johnstown, PA., and also of Fort
Campbell. He was taken to Owensboro
Daviess County Hospital where his condition last night was termed as
satisfactory.
He was reported to be suffering from a head
injury.
City Patrolmen Fred Hall and Charles
Porter, who investigated, said they learned from witnesses that the vehicle
carrying the quartet was going south on Frederica Street at a very high rate of
speed when the accident happened.
The Panchism
car apparently clipped the back end of a car driven by Robert Glasglow, 19, of 2733 Eastern Parkway, who was turning into
a drive-in restaurant just north of the Tamarack Road intersection and caromed into
the light pole on the west side of the street and about 100 feet north of
Tamarack Road.
Glasglow told
police that he was preparing to turn into the drive-in when he felt a thud and
turned to see the car as it struck the light standard.
Coroner Davis said Miss Ballard was thrown
200 to 300 feet from the car. Gunn was
thrown 400 feet.
A witness to the crash, who reported he
was heading south and about a block away when the accident happened, said it
appeared, the car going at a high rate of speed sideswiped another vehicle
headed in the same direction and caromed into the light pole.
The witness said that as the car struck
the pole, two persons, later identified as Mrs. Barnes and Gunn were thrown
from the car.
The wires on the shattered light pole
appeared to enshroud the battered car and smoke began rolling from the vehicle.
He said that as he and other persons in
the vicinity started moving toward the car, a man inside the vehicle,
apparently Panchisim started yelling loudly,
"Stay back.”
Later, he said, the man who was behind
the steering wheel started screaming to be taken out of the car. The woman in the front seat later identified
as Mrs. Barnes was lying across the man.
When the woman had been moved, Panchisim
started crying, “I want my daddy,” the witness said.
The car was demolished. The right side of the car was wrapped around
the light pole.
According to the witness, the impact
threw the back seat into the intersection. Two jack handle bars in the car were thrown
across Frederica and Tamarack and into the front yard of Shuck and Noble real
estate office, about 50 feet east of Frederica.
Other parts of the jack or jacks were found in the middle of the
intersection.
No charges will be filed by the police until
after they have a chance to interrogate Panchisim. An inquest will be held Coroner Davis said.
Deputy Coroner Fred Wahl listed cause
of death on the Gunn boy as internal injuries and a fractured skull. Both girls died from internal injuries
according to Wahl.
Miss Ballard is survived by her mother,
Mrs. Clara Cox Alexander of Owensboro; her father, Donald Ballard of Anaheim,
Calif.; two brothers,* John Alexander and Gary Alexander, both of Owensboro;
and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cox of Owensboro.
She was a member of Breckenridge Street
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband,
who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.; one daughter, Donna Mae Barnes; mother,
Mrs. Henry Leach of Owensboro; one brother, James Thomas Woolsey of Owensboro;
two half-brothers, Gregory Scott Leach and Jeffery Ross Leach, both of
Owensboro; grandmother, Mrs. Floy Beck of Route 1, Cromwell; and
step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Leach of Owensboro.
She was a member of the Third
Baptist Church.
Mrs.
Barnes body is at the Owensboro Funeral Home.
The others are at the James H. Davis Funeral Home.

Submitter's Notes:
*Although
various articles on this accident appeared in the newspapers, their accounts
differed. The Owensboro paper said two occupants of the car were thrown out
while the driver and one of the girls were still in the car. The Evansville
paper said all four were thrown from the car. In the above article one paragraph says Miss Ballard was thrown
from car and in another paragraph states Mrs. Barnes was thrown.
**John
and Gary Alexander were her half brothers.
Below is the funeral announcement.

Fatal Accident
Witnessed By Victim's
Father
David Lewis Morris, six-year-old son of
Atty. and Mrs. Roy L. Morris, 736 Clark St., was dead on arrival at Guernsey
Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car on Oakland Blvd., Thursday
evening.
The boy's father, a Cambridge city
councilman, witnessed the fatal accident.
Cambridge police said the youth
apparently died from head injuries after being struck by a car driven by Golby T. Fisher, 38, of 1610 Stewart Ave. Fisher was not held.
The scene of this accident, the first
pedestrian death here since May 2, 1961, when a young boy was struck and killed
on N. Ninth St., was in front of the Oscar Share home at 1003 Oakland Blvd.
Authorities gave this account.
Fisher was traveling south on Oakland
Blvd. when approximately 37 feet north of Oakland and Brenton Ave., in front of
the Share home, the Morris youngster darted in front of a parked car and into
the path of Fisher's auto.
Fisher later told police
he didn't see the youngster until he was in front of the car. Police said the impact knocked the boy
approximately 78-feet.
Police said the boy had apparently been
over to the Share home handing out campaign literature for his father, a
candidate in Tuesday's primary. Atty.
Morris was standing across the street from the Share home when his son left the
Share's front yard and started across the street when he was struck.
Gordon Share, 13-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Oscar Share, was standing in his front yard and also witnessed the
accident, police said.
A motorist, Donald A. Kranz, of Cambridge, R. D. 4, was following Fisher's auto
at the time of the mishap, but did not see the boy struck, police said. He told police he was in the process of
turning onto Brenton Rd. and didn't see young Morris until he was lying in the
street.
The youngster, a first grade student at
Oakland School, was only three blocks away from his home when struck by the
car. He and his younger brother, Tim,
were accompanying their father and assisted in giving out campaign material.
Police said the accident occurred at
6:57 p.m. They continued their
investigation Friday.
The
tragedy occurred one block from where another first grader at Oakland school,
Ricky Marquis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leste Marquis, 821
N. 18th St. was struck by a car about two months ago. Ricky received a broken leg and other
injuries and for several weeks was a patient at Guernsey Memorial Hospital.
Young Morris' death brings to eight the
number of persons killed on city and county roads this year. It was the first pedestrian fatality this
year.
The youngster was born in
Cambridge Aug. 14, 1956 to Roy L. and Beverly June Nugen
Morris. He attended the First Methodist
Church and was a member of the Sioux tribe of the "Y" Indian Guides.
Surviving in addition to his parents,
two brothers, Tim Scott Morris, 4, and Barry J. Morris, 1; the maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Nugen of 1028
Taylor Ave.; and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Morris of 448
N. Eighth St.

conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home by the Rev. Wallace Bryenton and Dr. Thurman F. Alexander. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.

after 5 p.m. Friday.

Another Ohio
Outing
Climaxed by
Tragedy
HILLSORO, Ohio (AP) -- A carefree outing
of young girls has ended in sudden death--for the second time in a period of
less than 48 hours--in Ohio.
The latest happened Monday afternoon,
when an automobile carrying four Clinton County girls veered off Ohio 41 north
of Greenfield. It slammed into a bridge
culvert, leaving two dead and two hurt seriously.
The day before, six Youngstown girls
died when a train hit their car near Ashtabula.
That accident, early Sunday, happened as the girls were returning from a
swimming party.
Highway patrolmen said the four girls
in Monday's accident apparently were going swimming at Rocky Fork Lake. They identified the dead as Jo Anne Anders,
18, Sabina, and Ruth Ann Von Bergen, 18, Rt. 2, Sabina.
Susan Carter, 18, and Debbie Nunn, 17,
both of Sabina, were taken to Greenfield Municipal Hospital.
