Motorcyclist
Melvin
Baker,
19, Killed Here
by DON DERRY
Times-Union
Staff Writer
Melvin Wayne Baker, 19-year-old Grace
College student and employee of R. R. Donnelley & Sons company, died at 8
a.m. today in the Murphy Medical Center following a violent crash 45 minutes
earlier on U.S. 30 just west of the Warsaw city limits when his motorcycle slid
into the side of a semi-tractor trailer.
The young man was the son of Rev. and
Mrs. W. Wayne Baker of Aleppo, Pa. Rev.
Baker is a minister there. Melvin was
one of four Baker children enrolled at Grace College. A sister, Joyce, is currently a student. A brother, Dwight, will enroll this fall, and
another brother, Glen, was just graduated.
Melvin resided with Dwight and Glen at the Uphouse
Trailer Court, Winona Lake.
The tragic accident occurred as Baker
was driving his 1956 Horex motorcycle in the
eastbound lane of U.S. 30, coming out of the curve near the Fox Farm Road.
SLIDES 110
FEET
The cycle went out of control and slid
110 feet on its side before crashing into the drive wheels of the Gulf Oil
Company semi, which was westbound, according to State Trooper Don Sand and
Sheriff Sam Holbrook. The accident
occurred squarely in the westbound lane.
Two witnesses, Dewey Lawshe
and Ralph Mittica, of Warsaw, said the truck bolted
upon coming in contact with the cycle and raised in
the air at least three feet. The truck
was driven by Ralph Dailey, 36, of Route 2, Huntington. He was not injured.
Baker was coming from work at the Donnelley
plant where he had been employed since May.
He worked in the press room and was working the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. The accident occurred at 7:15 a.m. Death was attributed to an acute sub-dural hemorrhage.
9TH THIS YEAR
Baker's tragic twist with fate on the
rain-soaked highway marks the ninth traffic fatality in Kosciusko county this year.
Seven had been killed at a corresponding time one year ago.
The last fatality occurred when Mrs. W.
K. Schrock, 60, of Warsaw, and Mrs. Hazel Mitchell, 61, of Huntington, lost
their lives on a county road four miles southwest of Warsaw on June 16. Baker was the first to die in a motorcycle
wreck in this county since John Lee Hedington, of
Warsaw, lost his life just east of Warsaw on U.S. 30 on May 14, 1952.

Ault Boy,
13, Drowns Near
Wellington
WELLINGTON, Colo. (AP) -- A 13-year-old
Ault boy, Robert Dean Henneck, drowned while fishing
at the Wellington Reservoir No. 4 northwest of Wellington Wednesday.
He fell from a 16-foot bank into water
10 to 16 feet deep.
Two sisters saw the accident and called
their father, Christian G. Henneck, who was fishing
several hundred feet distant.
Henneck was handicapped by an injured foot and he summoned
three men who dived in after the boy.
His body was recovered a short time later.
Henneck said
his son was a good swimmer, but was hampered by hip boots that probably dragged
him beneath the water.
Robert was born Nov. 5, 1947, in
Greeley. He attended Ault schools and
Trinity Lutheran Church of Greeley.
Besides his parents, he
is survived by the following sisters and brother, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Blehm and Miss Victoria Henneck,
both of Greeley, Ronald, Barbara, Gail and Donna, all at home; and his
grandmother, Mrs. Leota Briggs of Westminster.
The Hennecks had gone fishing because the father was
unable to work due to his foot injury.
He had a toe removed recently.
Robert was wearing his dad's boots and the slick mud caused him to slip
off the steep bank near the intake of the reservoir.
He was rescued right away, but did not
respond to artificial respiration. The
accident occurred about 9:45 a.m.
The Henneck
home is located near the Wyatt School, 4 miles east and 1/2 mile south of Ault.

tractor on his farm property located on North Gratiot Count Line road. Municipal Judge Henry Hart, as acting coroner
was summoned to the Kinkade farm as were sheriff's

Funeral services for Harvey D. Kinkade, 69, retired Porter Township farmer and member of
the Midland County Board of Canvassers for many years, will be held Friday at
1:30 p.m. from the Whiting Chapel, Breckenridge. The Rev. Henry Schneider, pastor of the
Porter Township Brethren in Christ Church, will officiate and burial will be in
Ridgelawn cemetery, Breckenridge.
Mr. Kinkade
suffered a heart attack while operating a tractor mower combination on a ditch
bank at his farm shortly after noon Tuesday.
Municipal Judge Henry Hart, acting coroner, ruled the death was caused
by the heart seizure. Mr. Kinkade had been under a physician's care for some time for
treatment of a heart condition.
According to sheriff's deputies, Mr. Kinkade was mowing along a bank and fearing the tractor
would tip over, he attached a chain to a nearby tree to hold the tractor while
he mowed around the bank. As he again
started up the tractor, it is believed he suffered the heart attack. He fell back between the tractor and wheel,
deputies said.
Born in Paulding County, Ohio, Mr. Kinkade came to Michigan as a boy. He had lived in Porter Township 51
years. Active in various farm
organizations, Mr. Kinkade was a member of the county
board of convassers at the time of his death and he
had served on the board many years, including being chairman at various times.
In addition to his wife Essie, he is
survived by four sisters, Mrs. Walter Clark, Highland Park; Mrs. Emerson Clark,
