.
When I have crossed the bar,
     Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning at the bar
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
    Turns again home.
.
Twilight and evening bell.
    And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
    When I embark.
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
I hope to see my Pilot face to face.

Car   On   Bridge   Spurs   Hunt   For   Missing   Man

A car left deserted on the E. 31st St. bridge with headlights burning and the key in the ignition last night touched off an extensive police search for the missing driver.

The car was traced to John F. Gillespie of 1886 E. 285h St., but at noon today Gillespie's whereabouts remained a mystery.

Last night police found insurance papers on the driver's seat and a bottle of what police said were apparently sleeping powders.  The powders are now being tested in a laboratory, police said.

Passers-by saw the car, became curious and called police to the scene.  The police turned flashlights down into the deep valley, then called the Coast Guard and fire department, who used powerful portable searchlights to scour the river and its rocky banks.  They saw nothing.

Coast Guardsmen said the river was too rocky at that point to be dragged, having tried last summer when a car went over the side.

They said the current was strong and could have taken a body downstream.

Police said the Coast Guard would be asked to help again if nothing was found today.

Missing     Man     Is     Still     Hunted

The mysterious disappearance of John F. Gillespie, 32, of 1886 E. 28th St., Wednesday night still had police and Coast Guardsmen searching for him at noon today.

The man's car was left on the E. 31st St. bridge with lights burning and key in the ignition and found by a couple who called police.

The hunt has been going on since then, with police checking all the places where Gillespie may have spent time.

The Coast Guard has been using an ice skiff with an outboard motor to patrol the river.  They were still looking this morning.

Gillespie's wife said he had been "very nervous" since a doctor warned him abut his poor health.  She and her three children left Gillespie three weeks ago.

Police said Gillespie had been laid off from his job at Fruehauf Trailer Company a few weeks ago.

DISAPPEARED         ON         FEB.    6

BODY          OF         GILLESPIE         FOUND        BY         DREDGERS

DISCOVERY     ENDS     LONG     AREA    HUNT

The body of John F. Gillespie, 32, of 1886 E. 28th St., whose car was found on the 31st St. bridge the night of Feb. 6 after he had disappeared, was dragged from the Black River today.

Coast Guardsmen who recovered the body said they found it floating near the corner of the turning basin across from the National Tube plant about three miles downstream from the bridge.

They said that because a sweater Gillespie had been wearing was partially pulled over the head, and because the body was otherwise fully clothed, they were unable to tell whether there were marks that would indicate whether Gillespie had been struck or beaten before his body entered the water.

Identification was made by Police Inspector Maurice Mumford, who was at the Coast Guard station when the body was brought there.  He found a wallet in a pocket and from papers in it determined the body to be Gillespie's.

Coast Guardsmen got their first call that the body had been discovered at 10:05 a.m. today.

A National Tube employe telephoned the station after workmen who were dredging the river saw the body floating.

The workmen, unidentified by name, are employes of the Wells Construction Co. which is conducting dredging operations.

Coast Guardsmen who went out in a small boat and recovered the body are EN 2 David Martin, BM 3 Fred Stute and BM 1 Wardie Holton.

Gillespie had been the object of a police and Coast Guard search which has been going on intermittently since the night of his disappearance.

After his abandoned car was found, his wife told police that they had been separated for about two weeks.

She described her husband as "very nervous" and said that he had been told by a doctor only recently that he had just a few years to live.

He had been laid off from Fruehauf Trailer Co.

. . . * Gillespie said she and her three children, had left him two weeks earlier, hoping it would be easier for him to straighten out his personal problems.

Found in the abandoned car were personal papers, all of which had been put in order.

Coast Guardsmen dragged the river below the bridge and police searched the area, both upstream and down, after the abandoned car was found.

The body has been released to Mathews Funeral Home, Mumford said late this morning.

*Submitter's Notes:  My copy of this article was unreadable at that point.  There was not much room for more than one word to have been left out, perhaps Mrs.

A photo accompanied this article with this caption below it:

Burns   Are   Fatal   To   Woman   From   Woodsfield   Area

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Alberta Morris Henthorn, 29, of Richfork, near Woodsfield, who died in the Barnesville Hospital early Saturday morning, of burns suffered in a fire which destroyed the family home on Friday night.

Mrs. Henthorn, mother of four children, was found on the floor of her burning home by her husband as he returned from the store.  He carried her and one child to safety, while the other three children fled the burning dwelling.

It is believed that Mrs. Henthorn's clothing ignited from an open fire place, and the flames from her burning clothing set plastic drapes and the house afire.

Less than a month ago the Henthorn's lost a six year old son in a shooting accident.  The young boy died after being shot in the head by an older brother as the Henthorn children played in the family car.

Village   Saddened   By   Hines'   Death

Never has Barnesville been more deeply saddened by a death than by the death on Monday afternoon at 5:40 of Charles W. Hines of 623 Wiley Avenue.  Mr. Hines died at the Veterans' University Hospital in Pittsburgh where he had been a patient for 13 days.

Some time ago Mr. Hines gave to John Campbell of the Campbell Funeral Service, his wishes, in full for his funeral and these wishes are being observed by the family.  The remains were brought to the Campbell Funeral Home, and friends were received after noon on Wednesday.  Private funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Byron B. Evans, D.D. of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. Fred A. Shiltz of the First Methodist Church.  Cremation will follow, and it was Mr. Hines' request that flowers be omitted and that his friends give this money to any worthy cause they should choose.

Mr. Hines was a son of George M. and Elizabeth Neuhardt Hines, and was born in Barnesville on February 16, 1899.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and of the Rotary Club which he had served as secretary for 22 years.  No one ever exemplified the Rotary motto, "Service above self” better than this member, who to many symbolized the heart of this service club.  His weekly bulletin, with its wit and wisdom, was eagerly looked forward to.

He was a veteran of World War I, and in service suffered injuries which crippled him permanently.  But no one ever heard him complain, and his cheerfulness was a wonderful tribute to his patriotism and courage.  His great hobby was his work as a "ham" radio operator, which made him friends near and far.

He was preceded in death by his father, two sisters, Olga and Catherine, and one brother, Walter.  His death bereaves his mother, of the home, three brothers, Stewart, James, and Lester, all of Barnesville, and one sister, Jeanne, a teacher in the Canton schools, besides countless friends.

Truck    Crash    Kills

Gentryville    Man

TENNYSON, Ind. -- (Special) -- William O. Stephens, 24, of R R 1, Gentryville, was injured fatally in a truck crash on Ind. 161 here shortly before 1 a.m. today.

The crash occurred inside the Tennyson city limits.  Warrick County Sheriff Robert Shelton found Stephens' body in the yard of the George Harris residence.

Sheriff Shelton said there were no witnesses to the accident, but that Mrs. Mildred Wire reported she was awakened by the crash and looked out her window in time to see Stephens crawling into the Harris yard.

Skid marks, according to the sheriff's report, indicated that Stephens' 1 1/2-ton truck went into a ditch, caromed across the highway and struck a concrete driveway culvert.  The sheriff said Stephens apparently fell from the truck.

Warrick County Coroner Charles Koehler said Stephens died of a broken neck.  Sheriff Shelton said the man was dead when he arrived at the crash scene, about 15 minutes after the accident.

The sheriff reported that Stephens' wife, Georgia, said her husband had hauled a tractor to Rockport to be repaired yesterday afternoon.  She said she did not know why her husband hadn't returned earlier.

Stephens also is survived by a 17-months-old son, Kenneth* Lee; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stephens, of near Dale; sisters, Mrs. Marybelle Byers and Audrey Stephens; brother, Frankie, all of near Dale.

The body is at the Fuller Funeral Home in Dale, where funeral arrangements are incomplete.
