Christman, Charles E. Christman
Source: The Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, Monday, Jan. 24, 1955

Charles E. Christman, 80, the son of Godfrey and Katherine Bauman Christman, was born on  October 7, 1874, on his parents’ farm near Wills Creek, West of Monroefield, Ohio. He departed this life January 5, 1955, at the age of eighty years and three months. Born into a large family he was the second youngest of ten children, which included three girls and seven boys.

His parents who were among the first settlers of this community, were from Germany with a background of strong Christian faith. He received the sacrament of Baptism at St. John’s Evangelical Church and later received the vows of Church membership himself by the rite of Confirmation at the age of fifteen. From that time forward he remained a faithful and loyal member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church throughout his lifetime. In his Church he found the strength and guidance he needed by regular attendance and participation in the sacrament of Holy Communion. He received his last Holy Communion ten days before God called him to his heavenly home.

On October 15, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Melinda Baker. To this happy union were born five sons. Laura died December 5, 1919, from typhoid fever, aged 45 years. Three sons, Harley, Herbert, and Clesson Christman were taken early in life. Harley died September 6, 1904, and; Herbert died February 4, 1903 and Clesson died in 1934.

The two living sons are Freeman Christman, of Monroefield and Harvey Christman of Woodsfield. The last two weeks of Mrs. Christman’s life were spent at the home of his son, Freeman where with his wife, brother Harvey, the grandchildren and neighbors, he was given tender and loving care day and night.

After the untimely death of his first wife, he was united in marriage to Emma Black on November 26, 1924. She too preceded him in death on June 19, 1946, aged 83 years, leaving one stepson, Stephen Black, now living in Zanesville, Ohio.

Mr. Christman has three grandchildren, Eldon and Ruth Christman, of Lewisville, Rural Route, and Richard Christman, of Columbus, Ohio. Also there are five great grandchildren who have brought much additional joy to him in these past years. Having a host of relatives, he is honored with having one of the largest relationships in this country, all descendants of the first pioneer settlers.

These early settlers built up their homes near springs where Mr. Christman built his home. Here on his beautiful farm located west of Barnhart Ridge Road he lived alone during these past years. On his farm he found much joy in tending the cattle and chickens, watching the crops grow and be harvested by his son and grandsons.

Burial was made in the St. John’s Middle Church cemetery, near Lewisville.

Hannibal     Man     Is

Believed     Lost

In     Ohio   River

   Body   of   Wilbur   Heslep,

   Crewman   on   Towboat,

   Has   Not   Been   Found

A Hannibal man, Wilbur Heslep, 54, is believed to have drowned Sunday morning in the Ohio river while working on a small towboat, although at the time this paper went to press his body had not been recovered.

Mr. Heslep was working on the small towboat, Keystone, Sunday morning and is believed to have fallen overboard.  Unable to swim, and wearing heavy clothing, it is believed that he was drowned.

A search of the area was done Sunday, and again Monday, but he was not found.  The towboat, with Victor Harrison as pilot, left New Martinsville early Sunday morning with two barges of gravel.  Only the two men were on the boat.

At about eight o'clock, as the boat was passing Heslep's home at Buckhill Bottom, south of Clarington, he took a cup of coffee to Harrison.  When the boat reached Lock 14 at noon, and Heslep did not come out to tie the boat, Mr. Harrison investigated and failed to find him on the boat.

A bucket in the washroom, used to dip water from the river, was also missing, leading him to believe that Mr. Heslep fell overboard while dipping water.

Mr. Harrison tied up the barges, and with helpers, returned to the dock with his boat, scanning the river all the way, but no trace of Heslep was found.

Mr. Heslep is the husband of the former Miss Mabel Harrison, and the father of five sons.  One son, Max, is in Alaska, and the Red Cross has been notified to return him here.  The others sons are George Heslep, of Canton; Wilbur Heslep Jr., of Hannibal; John Heslep, of Hannibal; and Jerry, at home.

Mr. Heslep had been working on this boat for about seven weeks.

The Wetzel county sheriff's department at New Martinsville was notified, as was the United States Coast Guard at Pittsburgh.

Weber, Alfred Henry Weber

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, July 21, 1955

Alfred Henry Weber, son of Wm. J. and Gertrude Claus Weber, was born in Malaga Township, Monroe County, Ohio, on October 21, 1904. He departed this life suddenly on the evening of May 18, 1955, at the age of 50 years, six months and 27 days of age.

He was the eldest of a family of seven children and was baptized in the Evangelical and Reformed faith when an infant. At the early age of thirteen, he was confirmed in St. John’s church near Lewisville where he remained a faithful member.

On December 5, 1928, he was married to Laura Ethel Hoff, who with their two sons, Lyle, of Quaker City, and Leslie, of Columbus, survive.

He is also survived by two daughters-in-law and the following brothers and sisters: Wesley Weber, of Lewisville; Wm. J. Weber, of Mansfield, Ohio; Mrs. Ernest Hoff and Mrs. Willard Weber, of Lewisville. and Mrs. Clinton Lent, of Quaker City, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George, of Barnesville, Ohio.

Mr. Weber resided in Monroe County until 1941 when he, with his family, moved to Quaker City where they have since made their home. He was employed by the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., and in 1953 was presented a thirty-year badge of honor, making a total of thirty-two years of faithful service with that company.

Along with this employment he became a skilled plumber. Although his earthy life was short, it was one of fullest service to his fellowman.

He gave unsparingly of his time, talent, and possessions for those in need. No call within his knowledge went unheeded.

Mr. Weber was a member of the Men’s Brotherhood of his church and also of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Quaker City. He was a good husband and father, and a citizen who will be greatly missed. Though the shock is hard to bear we have this consolation: With his earthly journey over may the Master say: “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church at Middle Church, with Rev. George Varns, of Lewisville, and Rev. Robert Zinsmeister, of Quaker City, officiating. Burial was made in the church cemetery.

A traffic accident Wednesday afternoon,  May 11th about 4:30 o'clock claimed the life of James Wise, 39 of Graysville.  He was crushed to death when a double trailer tanker rolled onto his small three-quarter truck on Route 18, east of Brimfield, Ohio and four miles south of Kent.

The accident happened when Wise,  headed east,  attempted to pass the tanker.  When traffic from the opposite direction approached,  Wise darted in front of the tanker,  but clipped the heavier outfit's left fender.

The impact caused Wise's truck to roll over in front of the tanker.  Both trucks slid into a ditch,  the tanker falling on Wise's truck.  With Wise was Raymond Busch, 37, of Marr, who was cut on his right hand.   Wise and Busch were pinned inside the truck,  Busch was freed by passersby who broke a window.

Wise was pronounced dead by a physician summoned to the scene after State Highway patrolmen and wrecking truck crews worked more than an hour to free his body.

The tanker was driven by Lloyd S. Rivers 27, of Toledo.  He was uninjured.

Mr. Wise was born April 15, 1917, near Graysville,  a son of Asa Wise of Graysville, Route 1, and the late Mrs. Nancy Scott Wise.
