1st '54 Car Death
Recorded In Dade
With only one day gone in the new year,
Dade County today had chalked up the first traffic fatality for 1954.
Mrs. Mary Becker, 46, a visitor
from Ohio, was killed on the South Dixie Highway at 10:45 p.m. yesterday when
her car was struck headon by a vehicle which police said was traveling 90 miles
an hour on the wrong side of the road.
The accident climaxed a day which saw eight persons injured
in accidents in greater Miami.
In Monroe County a sailor was killed and five persons
injured on a crash on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys.
Manslaughter Charge
County police said Mrs. Becker was driving south on the
Dixie Highway when her car was struck by a speeding car driven by Neal Tukes,
42, of 203 S. Dixie Highway, Coral Gables. Tukes, a Negro, was seriously
injured but police said he would be charged with manslaughter.
Mrs. Jennie White, 70, who had been staying at 4515
Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables with Mrs. Becker, also was injured.
Two Negro passengers in
Tukes' car sustained only minor injuries.
Police said Tukes was racing
with another vehicle going north on the Dixie Highway and swung out into the
northbound lane of traffic to strike the Becker car.

we loved best.
23rd Psalm
The Lord is my Shepherd; I
shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me
beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul. he
ladeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name sake.
Yea, though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.
For Thou art with me. Thy rod
and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup
runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.

Colvin McMahan
Tell City, Dies
TELL CITY, Oct. 4 -- (Special) -- Colvin McMahan, 41, of
Tell City, was crushed to death today as he attempted to start a balky
bulldozer.
The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. while McMahan and
Dick Gassaway, 38, also of Tell City, were clearing land on a farm recently
bought by Jesse J. Dauby. The farm is on Ind. 66 in Spencer Count [sic--County],
10 miles west of Tell City.
McMahan ran the bulldozer up a slight slope leading to the
highway when the two men stopped work to eat lunch.
McMahan was unable to start his machine when they returned
to work, Gassaway said, and crawled under the bulldozer to make an adjustment.
The motor started before he could roll clear and, as the machine backed down
the slope, the blade crushed McMahan's left side.
The runaway bulldozer rammed into Gassaway's machine
damaging it extensively.
Spencer County Coroner Gardner Painter said McMahan
apparently was killed instantly. He returned a verdict of accidental death.
Surviving are the wife, Ida; two sons, Cpl. Donald McMahan
in Germany, and Dale, at home, and his father, William W., Route 1, Cannelton.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the family residence
on 14th street. Elder John Fulda, pastor of the Louisville Church of Christ,
will officiate.
Burial will be in Deer Creek Cemetery.

A precious one from us has gone
A voice we
loved is still;
A place is vacant in our home
In which
no one can fill.
.
Sad and sudden was the call
Of one, we
loved best of all;
Happy, smiling, always content
Loved and
respected wherever she went.
.
So, to all, who have a mother
Cherish
her with care,
You will never know her value
`Till you
see her vacant chair.
.
Rest, Dear Mother, thy labor is o`er
They
willing hands will toil no more.
For God at last knew what was best
So he took
you home with him to rest.
.
Please god, take this message
To our
Mother up above
Just tell her how we miss her
And give
her all our love.
Sadly
missed by the Family
