Young   Mother   Hurled   From   Auto

Under   Wheels   Of   Truck,   Killed

        "Son, I killed your mother . . ."

A dazed father, unconsolable from grief, clasped his two-year-old stepson in his arms in Methodist Hospital last night.

Internes  had just notified James H. Flinn, Pittsboro, his wife, Mrs. Theda L. Flinn, had died in the emergency room.

Mrs. Flinn, 21, was crushed beneath the wheels of a truck in an accident involving her husband's car at the Georgetown Road and 34th Street a few minutes before.

"Brace yourself," the interne said.  "Your wife is dead."

FLINN, nervously pacing the hospital corridor, the child clasped in his arms, went pale.

Then, looking at the uncomprehending child, little Thomas Flinn, he choked out the words of self-accusation.

Deputy sheriffs said his attractive wife was thrown from the front seat of his car and beneath the wheels of the truck when the two vehicles collided.

They said Flinn admitted he had run a stop sign.  The victim was rushed to the hospital but died in the receiving room without regaining consciousness.

AN AUTOPSY revealed most all internal organs had been crushed.

The truck careened into a ditch. Its driver, Robert J. Hayden, 18, Route 18, Indianapolis, said he had no chance to avoid the collision.  Hayden was not held.

Other highway and rail accidents took a toll of five dead . . . .

He was united in marriage with Marie Smith on May 6, 1916.  To this union were born three children: Carl, of Akron; Mabel and Rosena, of the home.

Mr. Frank was a member of the Mt. Zion Methodist church, and was always interested in Christian ideals in his home and community.  He had not been in good health for the past twelve years but had gradually become worse the last three months of his live.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his departure a daughter-in-law, Opal; one sister, Mrs. Rosa Devore, of Graysville; four brothers, Oscar Frank, of Woodsfield; Wesley Frank, of Ashland; Osal Frank, of near Lewisville, and Price Frank, of Graysville; also a host of other relatives and friends.

Latta, Cora Ethel Latta, nee McHugh

Source:  The Spirit of Democracy, [Woodsfield, Ohio] Thursday, 17 Mar 1949

Cora Ethel Latta, 56, was born near Graysville, Ohio, August 12, 1892 and departed this life Sunday morning, February 27, 1949, at the Martins Ferry Hospital, having been a patient there for the past two weeks.

She was the youngest child of the late Lewis and Mary M. McHugh.  On January 30, 1926, she was united in marriage to Dr. R. H. Latta of Graysville.  Here they have spent their entire married life.

Surviving with the bereaved husband are one sister, Mrs. E. P. Lovett of Bridgeport; one brother, J. F. McHugh of New Matamoras, Route; seven nieces; one nephew; also a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Latta united with the Greenbrier Methodist Church in early youth and in later life has attended the Graysville Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Woodsfield Chapter--Order of Eastern Star, of the Rebekah Lodge, and of the Graysville Grange.

The deceased was a graduate of Ohio University and for a number of years was a successful teacher in the public schools, teaching in both the elementary and high school fields.  During this time she served as special teacher of sub-normal children in Indiana and in Cleveland, Ohio.

One year ago she underwent a major operation in the Cleveland clinic hospital and recently suffered a relapse of such nature that all medical skill could do was to no avail.  During her illness she appreciated to the utmost the care and acts of kindness given her by family and friends.  To the end, her chief thoughts were of others, as her chief pleasure was in helping them.

Services to her memory were held at the family home in Graysville Monday evening by the Woodsfield Chapter O.E.S.  Funeral services were conducted from the Graysville Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 oclock with her pastor, Rev. Floyd Workman, officiating.  Interment was made in Oak Lawn Cemetery at Woodsfield.  The Gardner funeral home at Stafford was in charge.

She would not want the ones she loved

        To grieve for her today;

We must not say that she is dead

        For she is just away--

To a land that's bright and fair

And though we all will miss her here

        We know she's happy there--

And memories of her will bring

        New comfort every day

As we recall--she is not dead

        For she is just away!
