Everett Bauman Burned to Death In Truck Fire

Sterling Man Pinned In Cab In 3C Accident Tuesday

Funeral services were held this afternoon for Clarence Everett Bauman, 25, truck driver of Sterling R. D., who was burned to death early Tuesday in a truck accident on the 3C highway just south of Jackson. The Rev. Noah Hartzler was in charge of services at the Murray Funeral Home in Creston. Burial was made in the Apostolic Cemetery here.

Bauman is survived by his mother, Mrs. Burdella Bauman of Sterling; three brothers, Walter and William of Sterling and Forest* of Dayton; two sisters, Mildred and Selma of Wooster.

Bauman and Lester Workman of N. Seneca st., Rittman, were driving companion trucks of the John Klann Co. of Cleveland, loaded with roofing and consigned to Dayton. They had stopped at Sterling Tuesday morning and resumed the trip about 3 a.m. Just after the trucks turned south on the 3C highway at Jackson, Bauman's truck, in the lead, began to pull off to the right. It ran along the berm about 200 feet, ripped off about 40 feet of guard railing and posts, then pitched over an embankment on the west side, overturned in a stream, with the top of the cab buried in the water. The gasoline tanks spilled gasoline over the truck and it immediately burst into flames.

Workman rushed to the scene as soon as he could, but was unable to give Bauman any assistance in the flaming cab. The trucks were traveling 25 or 30 miles an hour at the time of the accident. Bauman had been driving for the company about five years.

He was well known in Rittman where he was a regular patron for gasoline and truck supplies.

TRAGEDY SIDELIGHTS

Tragedy seems to be following the steps of Forrest* Bauman, who returned to his mother's Mrs. Burdella Bauman's home from Wright Field at Dayton, where he had been injured, and was with the family when his brother Everett, met with a tragic and fatal automobile accident,** Tuesday morning, south of Jackson.

Bauman was to have been married on Easter Sunday to Miss Vivian Stout of Wooster, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H. E. Stout of Damascus, Ohio.

Submitter's Notes:

*This name was spelled two different ways in the article Forest and Forrest.

**This was a truck accident. No automobiles were involved.

Fairmont       Football

Player        Is       Victim

FAIRMONT, Oct. 10 -- Injured during an East Fairmont high school football scrimmage here Tuesday afternoon, Gerald Keller, 16-year-old youth, lost his gallant, goaline stand against death early this morning.

Death came to young Keller at 1 o'clock after a 29-hour battle for his life in an "iron lung" in Morgantown.

Gerald's mother, Mrs. Victoria Keller, members of his family, Coach Ike Lewis and several members of the East high squad were present when the end came.

The boy had suffered a dislocation of the spine which paralyzed chest muscles so badly as to impair his respiration, physicians said, and he was taken to Morgantown to be placed in the lung.  Dr. Justice C. Pickeet had said an operation would be inadvisable because the lad's condition was such that he would not be able to recover from a major surgery.

The East high-Mannington game set here for tomorrow night has been cancelled, and it is possible that the remainder of the Bees' schedule will also be cancelled, school officials reported.

Rush, Edna Rush nee Davis

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, September 18, 1941

Mrs. Edna Davis Rush, 22, of Sterling, Ohio, was drowned Sunday evening [September 14, 1941] in the Ohio river in an auto that plunged from the barge of the New Martinsville-Duffy ferry. Her husband, Virgil Rush, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Rush, of Sardis, and the driver of the car, Geo. Martin succeeded in opening the doors of the car and getting out, but Mrs. Rush who had been seated between the two men, was carried down in the car. Her body was not recovered until the auto had been drawn, from the river. Efforts of resuscitation were then unsuccessful.

The three had been visiting during the day at the home of Mrs. Rush s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Davis of New Martinsville, and started home about six o clock. The car was run down the steep embankment to the barge of the ferry, but for some reason the brakes refused to hold and the car continued the length of the barge and plunged off the far end.

Martin was the first to free himself from the car, and made his way to shore, little the worse for his experience. Virgil Rush next fought his way to the surface and struck out for the shore, where he was rushed to the Wetzel County hospital. He was suffering from shock and his condition was listed as serious.

In the meantime efforts to get the car from the river were successful and Mrs. Rush s body was found still within it. Firemen and police were called and made efforts to revive her, but they failed.

The remains were alter removed to the Rush funeral establishment at Sardis.

HEART ATTACK

CAUSES DEATH

OF YOUNG GIRL

Many friends in this vicinity were greatly shocked and grieved to learn of the sudden death early Sunday morning of Miss Vivian Stephen, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Stephen of southwest of Bloomville. Although she had been in poor health for a number of years and had been critically ill for a time last year, her health had seemed to be improving of late, and her sudden death caused by a heart attack came as a great shock to her family and friends.

Vivian had attended the basketball game in Bloomville Friday evening. On Saturday evening her mother and she made candy while the father and the brother came to Bloomville. She pulled taffy, listened to the radio, made preparations to go to Sunday School the next morning and seemed to be in best of spirits when she retired at a late hour Saturday night. She talked to members of her family as late as one o'clock Sunday morning. About 1:20 a.m. they heard her groan and hastening to her bedside found her dead.

A girl of pleasing personality and cheerful disposition she had many friends at school and in her Sunday School which she attended. Although she had been unable to attend school for several years because of her health, she still retained her interest in the junior class, of which she would have been a member had she been able to go on with her education.

Vivian was born in Monroe County, Aug. 2, 1923. She is survived by her parents, and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Lester G. Ferguson, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. Ralph E. Besancon, Milford, Mich.; Richard and James, both of Pontiac, Mich.; and Harmon, at home. She was a member of the Bloomville Methodist church.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Bloomville Methodist church and were conducted by Rev. Wm. H. Sanders. A large number attended the funeral including members of the Sunday School and school classes to which she belonged. Girls of the Sunday School class served as pallbearers, and other members of the two groups took care of the flowers. Interment was in Union cemetery in New Washington.
