Claus, Fredrick Claus

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, September 16, 1937

.

Sweetly rest from all thy labor,

                                         Far from every grief and pain;

We will often think about you,

While we here, on earth remain.

That life is not entirely lived on this earth was proved again when the Angel of Death took from our midst, a dear father and friend, whom we all cherished and loved. To die with the faith that makes death seem a sweet relief means that life is only to begin. When death claims the earthy house of the soul therefore let us not weep but rather thank God that he gave this dear father and friend that faith and Maker of life.

Fredrick Claus, born Feb. 2, 1855, died Aug. 24, 1937, being at the time of his death 82 yrs., 6 mo., and 22 days old. He was baptized in the Evangelical Church of Miltonsburg, and on April 10, 1870, he was confirmed in the same church by Rev. Weisgarber.

On January 20, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Haffner, of Harriettsville, Ohio. He lived in Monroe County his entire life.

The following have preceded him in death; his wife and two sons, William H. and Clemence G.; surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Anna Christman, Mrs. Minnie Egger and Mrs. Clara Christman, all of Lewisville, Route; and four sons, Edwin F. and Benjamin H. Claus of Iowa; Leroy A. and Gilbert C. Claus, of Lewisville Route. There are 24 grandchildren surviving, and four have preceded him in death; also 5 great grandchildren survive, and 2 great grandchildren have preceded him in death; four brothers and a sister have also gone before.

May we realize that our loss is eternal gain. May God help us to live a faithful life so we may enter that world where death nor sorrow ever come.

He bore his suffering with great patience to the end. At last his spirit left his frail body to return to God who gave it. He laid down the Cross he carried so long and picked up the crown he had won.

Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John Haffner, son of John and daughter Mildred, of Harriettsville; Mrs. Charles Ullman, of Marietta; Jacob Christman, of Toledo; George Zimmerman, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Zimmerman, of Lower Salem; Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Conner of Marr; Mrs. Chester Chester Schwartz and Miss Celesta Christman, of Bucyrus; Mr. and Mrs. Wilburt Zimmerman, Mrs. August Pabst, of Lebanon; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Christman and daughter Wanda Lee, of Bethesda.

.

Beneath our eyes he fadeth slowly.

Growing, day by day, more frail,

                              Bearing sweetly all his sufferings

                               Without murmur, moan of wail.

                              In the household many sorrows,

That his race so soon is run,

But we should not mourn for father,

As the Savior bids him come.

We loved him, yes, we loved him,

But his Savior loved him more.

So the angels sweetly called him

To that bright and happy shore.

Leach, Hazel J. Leach nee Powell

Hazel J. Leach, daughter of Homer and Martha Gregg Powell, was born Feb. 19, 1907, departed this life April 10, 1937, aged 30 years, one month and 21 days. She was united in marriage June 9, 1928, to Arch Leach. To this union was born five children: Homer Rex, 8; Arch Neil, 7; Gervis Rollens, 5; Florence Carol, 3; and Barbara Jean, one month and 19 days; who are left without a mother at a very young and tender age. The father and young husband is left to miss his kind, loving and devoted help mate. Her father and mother and one sister are also left. So sadly bereaved that human words of sympathy cannot ease their aching hearts. Three brothers and one sister have gone on before her to the home beyond the skies. Hazel s home, husband and children were her first thought. She sacrificed her sweet young life for all. If she had lived her allotted three score years and ten she could have done no nobler. She has done what she could. The Master will say well done, Hazel.

Dearest Hazel thou has left us,

And our loss we deeply feel,

But tis God that hast bereft us

He will all our sorrows heal;

For in heaven we hope to meet thee,

Where no farewell tears are shed.

CARD OF THANKS

ACCIDENTAL     SHOT

     TAKES      BOY'S     LIFE

Tell City Youth Shoots Self in

       Head While  Playing

              With Pistol

TELL CITY, Dec. 5. -- (Special) -- Walter Morris, 19, is dead tonight, the victim of another "unloaded gun" tragedy that resulted from a brief moment of "fooling" with his friend, William Harper, 19, this afternoon.

Young Harper, who had been working in his father's tire shop in the Tell City Garage and Machine woorks [sic?] during trhe [sic--the] afternoon, told Coroner Earl R. Snyder tonight the story of how his chum, Walter, apparently shot himself to death, accidentally with a .38-coliber [sic-caliber] revolver.

"I was sitting at the desk of the office," he related.  "Walter reached into the cabinet over the desk and said, 'Look what I found.'  I was busy and didn't look up until I heard the shot."

The bullet entered the youth's head below the left eye and coursed up through the brain. He lived only a few minutes.

Coroner Snyder conjectured tonight that young Morris thought the gun was unloaded and was trying to frighten his friend by pointing the pistol at his own head.  His verdict was "accidental death."

The boy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Morris; two brothers, Earl of Frankfort, and Kenneth, Tell City; and two sisters, Hazel, Frankfort, and Mrs. Paul Fulks, Ft. Wayne.

May we find consolation in Tennyson's poem, "Crossing The Bar."

Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar

When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell

When I embark.

For though from out our bourne of time and place,

The flood may bear me far;

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crossed the bar.
