Barker, Alvin Barker
Alvin Barker, son of Moses and Sally
Barker, whose death occured at 3:00 o'clock on Wednesday morning. Aug.
12, 1936 at his home near West Union, was born May 26, 1847, aged 89 years, 2
months and 17 days and was the last of a family of 12 children. He was united
in marriage to Mary Truax on Apr. 8, 1868. To this union were born two sons and
four daughters. After his wife's death in 1883 he was united in marriage to
Sarah Norman Metz on Oct. 30, 1884. To this union one daughter was born.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah, two sons, Charles D. Barker, of Sardis, and A.E.
Barker of Long Island, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Lucinda Conley of Ashtabula,
O., Mrs. Mary Jane Hoskins of Quaker City; and Mrs. Olive Wood of Sardis; two
daughters preceded him in death. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 14, at 1:00
o'clock at the church of Christ at West Union with Evangelist H. E. Taylor
conducting the services. burial was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
Mr. Barker obeyed the gospel
at an early age and remained a faithful Christian until death. Provided by

CHARLES BELLER DIES AT
HOME NEAR DOVER

DOVER, Feb. 17.--Charles Beller, 61, well known dairyman
and former operator of a transfer business here, died suddenly of a stroke at
his home on Sugarcreek rd Sunday night. His death followed a lingering illness.
Mr. Beller was born near Stonecreek, a son of the late John
and Rona Swinderman Beller. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Maude Miller Beller; a
son, Robert; four daughters, Mrs. Clayton Kessler of West Lafayette, Mrs. Ross
Wagner of Washington C.H., O., Mrs. Catharine Gibbs of Sabina, O. and Miss Ruth
Beller of the home; a brother, Solomon of Dover, and two sisters, Mrs. James
Latourette of Uhrichsville and Mrs. Wm. Reese of Lakewood.
Services Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the home
with Rev. Vernon Couillard of Dover Moravian church officiating. Burial Maple Grove cemetery here.

Wife of
Ashland Police Force
Member Stricken
ASHLAND -- Mrs. Anna Biddinger Brown, 38, wife of T. R. Brown, patrolman on the
Ashland police force, died at 3:10 a.m. today at the Ashland Samaritan
hospital. Death was reported due to
heart trouble. She had been in ill
health for the past five months and had been in the hospital for the past three
weeks.
She was born Dec. 20, 1898 in Cleveland
and had lived in Ashland for the past 12 years.
She was a member of the United Brethren church and taught a Sunday
school class at the church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by
a daughter Elizabeth at home, and three brothers, Dr. A .E. Biddinger
of Cleveland, Howard Biddinger of Nova and Ross Biddinger of Akron.
The body will remain at the Shaw
funeral home until 1:30 p.m. Sunday. It
will then be taken to the United Brethren church, where services will be held
at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. G. B. Wetherbee
officiating. Burial will be in the
Savannah cemetery.

Mrs. Edna Brown, 50
Dies Here
Thursday
Mrs. Edna Brown, 50, died at 8:45 p.m.
Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.T. Henderson, 800 Chestnut street.
Mrs. Brown was born in Monroe county, September 15, 1885, the daughter of James and
Kathryn Cronin. Most of her life was
spent in Ashland county. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Her husband, Charles Brown, and a
brother preceded her in death. Survivors
are her daughter, Mrs. Henderson, five children, Mildred, Donald and Robert of
Ashland and Harold and Lorin of California and a
sister, Mrs. O.A. Daugherty of Jerusalem, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at
3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Heyl Funeral Home. Rev. O.L. Hull will officiate and burial will
be made in Ashland cemetery.
Burkhart, Andrew P. Burkhart
Word has been received here of the
death of Andrew Burkhart, 74, and well known resident of Seneca township, which
occurred on Wednesday morning of last week at the State Hospital, Athens, in
which institution he has been confined for about two weeks prior to his death.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs.
Elizabeth Schwallie, of Lewisville Route 4, with whom he made his home, and
Mrs. Lou Teufel of Wheeling, WV; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Weisend of
Lewisville, Route 4.
The remains were returned to Monroe
County, where funeral services were held and burial made near Lewisville, Route
4.

Mrs. Anna Carpenter, 41, who died at her home at Union Chapel at 1 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon, will be held from the Union Chapel church at two o'clock
Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in
Grandview cemetery.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. W. L. Gatchel, Union Chapel, two sisters, Mrs. Dow
Jones, Union Chapel, and Mrs. Pearl Chapman, Lamar, one brother, Roy Gatchel, Illinois, and two sons.

QUAKER CITY--Nov. 5,
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Carpenter, 88, will be held Friday afternoon at
2 o'clock at the home near Batesville, south of here, with Rev. A. A. Gilmore,
of the Flushing M. E. Church in charge. Interment will be in Calais Cemetery.
Mrs. Carpenter died
early Wednesday morning at the home. She was a daughter of Gillespie and
Seville Carpenter and was born in Monroe County where she spent the greater
part of her life. Her husband, James Carpenter, died March 9, 1915. She was a
member of the Calais M. E. Church.
Nine children
survive, as follows: Elizabeth Carpenter, Vincent Carpenter, Angeline
Carpenter, Calvin Carpenter, Mrs. Addie Starr, Mrs. Maude Leach and Hallie
Carpenter. One brother Henry Carpenter, also survives.

Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
Marshall Cline, aged about 90 years, highly respected
citizen of Brownsville community, died at his home there.
He is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters,
who with many other friends and relatives mourn his death.
Funeral services will be held at
Mr. Cline was an uncle of Mrs. Fred Baker, of East Church
street, and a brother of Mrs. Arie Elizabeth Foraker of Maple avenue.

Mrs. Loretta Craig, aged 78 years, passed away at the home
of her daughter Mrs. John Griffith, of Griffith Ridge, on Woodsfield Route 5,

Surviving are her husband J. T. Craig, four daughters, Mrs.
Guy McKelvey, of Woodsfield; Mrs. Ella Griffith at whose home she died, Mrs.
Anna Holtsclaw, of Sardis Route and Mrs. Lulu Griffith, of Jerusalem; two sons,
Jacob Craig, of Sardis Route and Chester Craig, Woodsfield Route 5, and one
brother Philip Fisher, of Woodsfield Route 1. Many other relatives and scores
of friends are also saddened by her death.
Short funeral services were held at the Griffith home at
Crumrine, Theora Crumrine
Spirit of Democracy,
Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
Miss Theora Crumrine, of Zanesville, formerly of
Woodsfield, was drowned while on a boating party on the Muskingum river, four
miles south of Zanesville Sunday. The Crumrine girl together with Donald
Painter, Herbert Fitch and his sister Jerry all of Zanesville had spent the
afternoon on the shore where their boat shipped water and sank. Fitch and his
sister escaped death by swimming ashore.
The body of Painter was discovered a half hour after the
accident. Shortly after that the body of the Crumrine girl was recovered from
the water. Efforts were made by firemen to revive the two drowned. They worked
over the victims with the inhalator for more than an hour.
Miss Crumrine was fifteen years of age. She was a daughter
of Mrs. Olive Crumrine of Zanesville and Walter Crumrine of Akron. In addition
to her parents she is survived by one sister Mrs. Grover McKelvey, of Zanesville;
one brother, Paul Crumrine of Akron; three uncles, Lawrence and Jacob Marple,
of Woodsfield, and Vernon Crumrine, of Woodsfield R 4 and her grandmother, Mrs.
Mary Friday of Woodsfield. Many more distant relatives and scores of friends
are deeply grieved by her death.
She was a sophomore in Lash High School, Zanesville and was
a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ. She moved to Zanesville about two
years ago.
The body was brought to the home of her grandmother Mrs.
Mary Friday on Monday afternoon in charge of Elder Forrest Moberly of
Graysville.
Interment was made in Oak Lawn cemetery.

Patsy G. Dougherty,* 5 months-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dougherty of Belleville, died late Saturday
night in the Camden-Clark Memorial hospital.
She is survived by her parents and 11
brothers and sisters.
The body was removed to the Warne funeral
home, where it will remain until today at noon, at which time it will be taken
to the Sereptha [sic--Sarepta] church for funeral services at 2
o'clock. The Rev. Mr. Carr will officiate.
*Submitter's Note: Although her father Walter Franklin (Frank)
was born with his last name spelled as DOUGHERTY and that continued through the
1920 census, by the 1930 census and from about that time on family records, his
tombstone, his obituary all spelled the name as DAUGHERTY.

William DeBow Dies After
Long Illness
William H. DeBow, resident of
Barnesville for the past 46 years, passed away at this home on West Main Street
Friday morning, January 17, at 6 o'clock. He had been in ill health for a long
time, suffering from asthma and heart trouble.
The funeral services were
held from the late home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dwight
B. Davidson of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made in Crestview
Memorial Park. H. L. Campbell & Sons in charge.
Mr. DeBow was born at
Granville,Ohio, December 28, 1866, the son of . . . .*
to this city at the time the
Bradford building was being erected, and as he was an expert stonecutter,
continued to work and live here, having been employed on most of the principal
buildings built here after the big fire. He was a member of a trade union at
Martins Ferry.
On October 9, 1889 he was
united in marriage to Laura Firna Merrell.** She survives him as do three
nieces and three nephews.

Decker, Deborah Elizabeth Decker

Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
Miss Deborah Elizabeth Decker, daughter of Roy B. Decker
and Louisa Okey Decker, of Eastern avenue, Woodsfield was born at Woodsfield,
on February 28, 1909 and departed this life at 1:00 o clock A. M. Sunday, July
12, 1936 at Rocky Glen Sanatorium, McConnelsville, Ohio, at the age of 27
years, 4 months and 14 days. She had been a patient at the Sanatorium for only
a few weeks.
She is survived by her parents, one brother Burris Decker
and two sisters, Minnie Louise and Martha Ann, all of the home. Her grandfather
Miles Okey of the home also survives in addition to a number of other
relatives.
She united with the Woodsfield M. E. Church when about
twelve years of age; was a graduate of Woodsfield high school, being a member
of the graduating class of 27. She attended Muskingum College at New Concord
and taught school in Belmont County for one year before serving as deputy for
her grandfather Miles Okey, Monroe County Surveyor.
Later she was employed in the office of Aid for the Aged in
Woodsfield, until seized with the malady that quickly brought about her death.
The body was brought to the home on Eastern avenue Sunday
afternoon where funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon by Rev.
Herbert C. White, pastor of the Woodsfield M. E. Church and were largely
attended. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery.
Deceased was well-known in Woodsfield and throughout the
entire County and has scores of friends who are saddened by her death in the
prime of young womanhood. She was self-reliant and pleasing in disposition and
was decidedly above average in ability, performing well the tasks she
undertook.
The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire
community.
Among those who attended the funeral service from

Samuel Devore, about 67, of Akron, Ohio, died Saturday
morning, March 21st, at his home in that city. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Dr. Charles Devore and Earl Devore.
He leaves a wife, and one son Ildreth, of Wheeling; two
brothers, Bradford, of Washington, D. C., and Harvey, of Chicago; one sister,
Mrs. Mae Winchell, of Mountain Lake Park, Md.
Mr. Devore was a Spanish American War veteran. He was
reared in Woodsfield where he has many friends who will long remember his
kindness of heart and his many sterling qualities.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Woodsfield,

Dietrich, William E. Dietrich, Jr.
Spirit of Democracy,
Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
William E. Dietrich, Jr., 29, whose home is near Hannibal,
Ohio, and a brother of D. C. Dietrich, treasurer and general manager of the
Wheeling Wholesale Grocery company, succumbed Tuesday morning [March 24, 1936]
at 5:00 o clock in Beth Israel hospital in New York City. He had been a patient
there for the past few weeks.
Mr. Dietrich was born near Hannibal, Ohio,
Surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Dietrich, of
Hannibal; one sister Mrs. F. L. Pollock, of Ambridge, Pa., and one brother, D.
C. Dietrich, of Wheeling.
Mr. Dietrich s illness grew out of an aggravated case of
mastoid and with the reserve of good health and clean young manhood he made a
gallant fight against the inevitable. Every effort possible in science and
nursing was made to aid his return to health.
His death in the prime of young manhood brings not only
great sorrow to his parents and family, but to the entire Hannibal community
and friends throughout the county..
Private funeral services will be held at the home probably
Friday, rising water in the Ohio River interfering with definite plans.

Dyer, E. W. Dyer

E. W. Dyer, familiarly known to many Woodsfield friends as
Win
Dyer, died Saturday evening [
Mr. Dyer was born and grew to manhood in Woodsfield. He was
married to Miss Mattie Tilford and to their union one son was born, and until
about twenty years ago when they moved to Cuyahoga Falls to be nearer their son
they made their home in Woodsfield.
Mrs. Dyer preceded her husband in death several years ago.
Besides the son above mentioned Mr. Dyer is survived by one
brother, Craig Dyer, of Grand Junction, Colo., and one sister Mrs. Clara Lang,
of Woodsfield.
When a young man Mr. Dyer learned the printing trade, being
employed on Woodsfield papers including The Spirit or Democracy and The
Sentinel, and few employes were ever more faithful or dependable. Though
retiring in disposition he made friends of those with whom he came in contact
and is kindly remembered by many of our older citizens.
Mr. Dyer was a life-long member of the M. E. Church,
faithful and regular in attendance as long as health permitted.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon followed by
interment in the Cuyahoga Falls cemetery.

Craig English, aged 76 years, died at his home at Rinards
Mills on Sunday [
Mr. English was a son of the late William and Janet
English, who were among the early residents of Monroe County. He was born on
Surviving the deceased are his widow and a son and
daughter, Howard English, of New Matamoras and Mrs. L. E. Byer, of Lower Salem,
and a brother, Shannon English of New Matamoras. There are six grandchildren
and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the Merrell Ridge Church on

CIVIL WAR SOLDIER IS DEAD,
AGED 90
Francis Fearing Passes Away;
Resided in Homeville for 25 Years
Death claimed another of the
few remaining Civil War veterans in this vicinity, yesterday, when Francis
Fearing, 90, a resident of Homeville, died at the family residence, 24 DeWitt
avenue, after a lingering illness.
During the Civil War he
served as a member of Co. E. 182nd O.V.I. For the past 25 years he resided in
Homeville.
Survivors include two sons,
William E. and Charles Fearing, and a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte McNermy [sic
McNerney], all of Columbus; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
The body is at the Keller
funeral home and Friday afternoon will be returned to the residence, where
funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in Greenlawn
cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.

funeral of Mrs. W. L. Gatchel, 62, who died at her
home, near Union Chapel, at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, will be held at the
Union Chapel church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in the church
cemetery.
She is survived by the husband; son, C.

Home on Thursday night and prepared for burial and on Friday was removed to the
home of his parents on Rich Fork.

George G. Newhart, 85,
Findlay brick mason, died at 4:45 P. M. Saturday of heart trouble while sitting
in a chair at his home, 816 Broad avenue. He had been ill for two years.
Mr. Newhart was born Aug. 4,
1951 in Woodsfield and came to Hancock county in 1888. His parents were
Gottlieb and Mary Newhart. He was married in 1903 to Mary Alice Wagant who
survives.
He is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Ida Chaster, Mt. Blanchard; two sons, Manuel and Ed Newhart,
Findlay; one step-son, Charles Huffman, Findlay; one sister, Mrs. Louise
Snyder, Woodsfield; and one brother, Charles Newhart, also of Woodsfield.
Two daughters and two sons
preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 P. M. today from the Renshler mortuary with Rev. Oscar Brown, pastor of
the East Foulke avenue Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in Maple
Grove cemetery.
The body was returned to the
residence yesterday and will be taken to the mortuary at 11 A. M. today.
Gillespie, H. P. Gillespie

Dr. H. P. Gillespie, aged 69 years, passed away at his
home on north main street at 9:00 o clock Wednesday morning, He had been in
failing health for some time but was able to be out in an automobile on
Tuesday. He suffered a heart attack on Wednesday morning which resulted in his
death.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. A. R.
Burkhart, of Eastern Avenue and two sons, Dr. Myron Gillespie of North Main
Street and Dr. Emerson Gillespie of Canton, Ohio; five grandchildren; two
brothers Reverend Hugh Gillespie of Cincinnati, and T. T. Gillespie of
Woodsfield Route 4; and three sisters, Mrs. R. V. Boyd of Newark, Ohio; Mrs. W.
A. Cronin of Paul Street and Mrs. Charles R. Norris of Woodsfield Route 4, a
number of other relatives also survive.
Dr. Gillespie was a highly respected citizen of Woodsfield
having resided here for the past several years. Through this profession he
contacted many people thereby making scores of friends who are saddened to
learn of his death.
The body was removed to the Bauer, Willison & Turner
funeral home where it was prepared for burial and on Wednesday evening was
returned to the family home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 o clock
Friday afternoon at the home in charge of Reverend Henry Fox, pastor of St.
Paul s Evangelical Church, and burial will be made in Oaklawn cemetery.
Dr. Gillespie came to Woodsfield from Lebanon about twenty
years ago, and in both communities was a very successful physician, due not
only to natural ability, but the close application to his profession.

Miss Lydia Belle Harper, well known woman of the Malaga
community, died at the home of her sister Mrs. Mabel Hardesty of St.
Clairsville Tuesday morning [June 16, 1936] at 5:00 o clock. Several months ago
Miss Harper had suffered a fractured skull in a fall down a flight of stairs
and was in the Community Hospital at Barnesville for treatment. Improving
greatly she was removed to her sister s home, where she was able to be up and
around, but suffered a relapse and died quite suddenly.
Miss Harper was the daughter of Nelson and Amelia Mann
Harper, and was born in Monroe County February 19, 1865. She was a graduate of
the nursing school of the Allegheny General hospital, Pittsburgh, where she
practiced nursing for sixteen years.
Although living a quiet home life for the past several
years, she was a woman of great influence and will be deeply mourned.
The remains were taken to the Campbell Funeral Home in
Barnesville, and then to the home one mile south of Malaga on the Woodsfield
road.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at
Bereaved by her passing are four brothers, J. O. Harper, E.
J. Harper and D. B. Harper, all of Malaga; Clarence Harper, of Barnesville, and
one sister Mrs. Hardesty, of St. Clairsville. She also leaves a large number of
nieces and nephews and a large circle of devoted friends.

Mrs. Josephine Haskett, 70,
of Easytown, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ollie
Hill of Universal, where she had been ill for the past two months.
She is survived by her
husband, John; two sons, John of West Frankfort, Ill., and Otto of Flint [sic--Flat]
Rock, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Candler of Universal and Mrs. Ada Miller
of Linton; also several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The body will be taken to the
residence at Easytown from the Karanovich funeral home at 4 p.m. today, where
funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Sidney
Cemetery near here.
Hendershot, David Hendershot

David Hendershot, aged 87, died Friday [
Mr. Hendershot is best known in Monroe County as a County
Commissioner and member of the Building Commission for the new Court House in
1907-1908. This county project was put through without suspicion of graft or
mismanagement and stands today as a fine piece of construction well worth the
money.
The membership of the Commission, whose names are on a
copper plate inside the east entrance to the Court House, is as follows: W.W.
Glassenkamp, W. C. Mooney, P. Schumacher, Frank Tyler, Isaac McCurdy, David
Hendershot, Samuel Groux, Charles Muhleman and G. W. Steward, who was auditor
at the time. Mr. Tyler is now the only living member of the commission.
Mr. Hendershot is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E. A.
McFrederick, of Lakewood, and Mrs. Otto Truax, of Martins Ferry; and one son
Wesley, of East Liverpool, and a number of other relatives whose names we could
not secure at this time.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in charge of
Rev. L. T. Spencer, of Woodsfield, and interment was made in the family plot in
Bush cemetery.

preceded him in death, Mrs. Vella Maude Powless, Alfred and Raymond. Four
brothers, Geo., William, Thomas and James and two sisters Sarah A. and Mrs.
Hannah J. Barr also preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing,
his wife, the above named children, one sister, Mrs. E. M. Cates, Wayne City,
Ill., and two brothers, John of Geff, Sylvester of Wayne City, Ill.,

Samuel G. Joseph, 84, died
early Sunday morning at the residence of his son, Jacob Joseph, of 1118 Main
ave., W., after an illness of several months. Two other sons, William Joseph of
near Canton, and Elmer Joseph; three daughters, Mrs. Sadie Schwartz, of Akron,
and Mrs. Ilow Kocher and Mrs. Martha Brutto, of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Mrs.
Martha Gotchall of Canton; 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren
survive. Mr. Joseph was a former member of the Groves United Brethren church
south of Canton.
The funeral will be held
Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the residence. The Rev. Harry Kimball, pastor of the

family lot in the Richville cemetery. The body was removed to the residence
from the Gordon-Shaidnagle-Hollinger funeral home this afternoon.

Mrs. Emma Keyser, aged 68 years, wife of John M. Keyser,
highly respected resident of Eastern avenue, passed away at her home about 4:30
o clock Tuesday afternoon [December 29, 1936] following an illness of several
weeks from a heart ailment and complications.
Surviving are her husband and the following children; Mrs. Harold
Cline of Woodsfield; Mrs. Frank H. Ward of Columbus; Mrs. Earl Spriggs of
Portsmouth, Ohio; Calvin Keyser of Akron; and P. J. Keyser of Redlands, Calif.
Many other relatives also survive including three sisters and four brothers as
follows; Mrs. Mary Mellott, Misses Linda and Clara Tschappat and Fred
Tschappat, of Beallsville; J. W. and G. A. Tschappat, of Utica; and Gen. W. H.
Tschappat of Washington, D. C.
The body was removed to the Bauer-Willison & Turner
funeral home and Wednesday afternoon was returned to the family home where
funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at
Mrs. Keyser, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip
Tschappat, was born at Cameron and before she and her husband moved to
Woodsfield about thirty-seven years ago, was also a resident of Beallsville.
Mrs. Keyser was retiring in disposition but kindly and
hospitable always, and those who knew her intimately knew her best in her home
life. Devoted to her husband and children, she was ever their mainstay and
loyal friend as well as wife and mother.
She lived to realize the glory of age, that of seeing her
children out in the world making good, and as frequently as time and distance
would permit, they returned to her for such companionship inspiration and
comfort as only a real mother can give.
Scores of Monroe county resident extend sympathy to the
bereaved husband and family.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at the
Presbyterian Home and on Friday afternoon the body will arrive in Woodsfield.
Final rites will be held at
Mr. Keyser and his wife resided in Woodsfield for about 20
years coming here from Bellaire. About two years ago they went to the
Presbyterian Home at Sidney. Both Mr. and Mrs. Keyser were members of the local
church affairs as long as their health permitted, Mr. Keyser being an Elder in
the church. Many friends in Woodsfield and community regret to hear of his
death.

Funeral For City Resident,
64, to Be Held Mon-
day Afternoon
Thomas Kincaid,* 64, for 24
years a truck driver for the Serv-Ice and Coal company, died at 6:40 o'clock
this morning at his home at 1610 Twenty-first street. He had been ill for nine
months.
The body was taken to the
Hege and Flanigan funeral home. It will be removed to the home Saturday
afternoon where friends may call after 2 o'clock until time of the funeral.
Services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, at he home, with the
Rev. J. R. Simmermon, pastor of the U.B.church, in charge. Burial will be in
Garland Brook cemetery.
Mr. Kincaid was born in
Shelby county. He had lived here 34 years and had been in continuous employe [sic]
of the Serv-Ice company 24 years. He was a member of the U.B. church, the
Eagles, Red Men and Haymakers lodges.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Amanda Kincaid; two daughters, Mrs. Herschel Vandagriff and Mrs. George King,
both of this city; two brothers, Charles Kincaid of Shelbyville and Richard
Kincaid** of Indianapolis, and two grandchildren.

Death of Jasper Kinkade
Jasper Newton Kinkade, aged
74 years, whose home was recently in Monroe Co. died at the home of his niece,
Mrs. R. C. Crawford, 1009 Phillips Street, Marietta, on Monday at 3:30 P.M.
following illness due to infirmities.
Mr. Kinkade lived in Illinois
for the greater part of his life and came to Ohio about three years ago when he
made his home with relatives in Monroe County. He went to the Crawford home a
short time ago. Five sons and daughters survive, the sons living in Danville, Ill.
Mrs. W. H. Weckbacher of Sycamore Valley is a half sister of the deceased. He
was a member of the Church of Christ.

Once more the Angel of Death
visited a small home, one mile east of Bremen, Ohio, on Thursday, February 13,
1936, and called Kathaleen Kinkade to rest.
Kathaleen was 15 years of age
and the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Kinkade. Death was the result of a
combination of diseases. She leaves to mourn her departure, her parents Mr. and
Mrs. David E. Kinkade, one sister, Maxine, and one brother, Donald of Bremen.
Her paternal grandmother, Margaret Kinkade and maternal grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Cline, all of Graysville.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday morning, February 15th, at 10:00 o'clock at the home. Interment was
made in the Grandview cemetery at Bremen.
Those who attended the
funeral from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. George Sinift and sons, of
Rushville; Mrs. H.H. Poulton, of Barberton; Earl and Hosie Cline, of

WEST UNION, June 25. -- Mrs.
Columbia Shackleford Lattea, 82, who had been blind since she was 30 years old,
passed away last night at the home of a son, Charles E. Lattea, at Hurst.
Funeral services will be held
at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Straight Run Methodist Episcopal
church, in charge of the Rev. D. M. Nichols. Burial will be in Straight Run
cemetery.
The survivors, in addition to
the aged husband, N. C. Lattea, are seven children, thirty-eight grandchldren,

Mrs. Benjamin J. Little, aged 67 and her granddaughter
Nancy Hackathorn, aged six years, were instantly killed on Wednesday of last
week [
The Hackathorn family resided in a section of Wheeling,
where the flood waters would reach their home and had therefore gone to the
Little home where they thought they would be safe from all dangers. Following
the explosion the building caught fire and was completely destroyed. Other
members of the Hackathorn family were also injured and removed to Wheeling
hospital for treatment, but at this time they have all been dismissed from the
hospital with the exception of one child, who received a badly fractured limb.
Mrs. Little is survived by her husband; one daughter Mrs.
Virginia Hackathorn; one granddaughter and three grandsons, besides many other
relatives. Mrs. Little was the former Miss Jeannette Bowman and was a resident
of Woodsfield until moving to Wheeling about twenty years ago. Her husband is a
brother of Mrs. E. J. Westerman, of Eastern Avenue of Woodsfield.
The Hackathorn child is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Marion Hackathorn, one sister and three brothers.
Double funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the
Cooey-Bentz Funeral Home in Wheeling, and burial was made in Mt. Zion Cemetery
in that city.
Among those attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. E. J.
Westerman and daughter Jean.

GEORGE A. LUCAS
DIES AT KOLEEN
Former Linton Man Ex-
pires Less Than Week
After Wife's Death.
Less than a week after his
wife had died, George Alfred Lucas, 60 years old, died at his home in Koleen
community. Mr. Lucas was so ill at the time of his wife's death that little
hope was held for his recovery.
Mr. Lucas was born on March
28, 1876, in Fountaintown, Indiana, the son of William Lucas and Eliza Britton
Lucas. He was married on December 25, 1899, to Malinda Ellen Fearnot. Most of
his early life was spent in Linton community. He joined the Methodist church
about fifty years ago. He worked on the railroad for several years, but during
the past eight years he been an invalid. He also held membership in the
I.O.O.F. lodge of Linton and Red Men lodge of Koleen.
Last rites were conducted
Monday afternoon from Walnut Grove church. Rev. Logan Hatfield officiated.
Interment was in Walnut Grove cemetery.
Surviving are six children,
Mrs. Paul Hudson of Koleen, Mrs. Moody Jones of East Oolitic, Miss Anna Lucas
and Elmer Lucas at home, John W. Lucas and George H. Lucas of Chicago; eight
brothers and sisters, Mrs. Eliza Burch, Mrs. Lillie Cox, Mrs. Anna Shepherd [sic
Shepard], Frank Lucas, Roscoe Lucas, John Lucas, William Lucas and James

Mrs. Minnie Fearnot Lucas, 56 years old, former Linton
resident, died at 4:30 o'clock Sunday morning at the family home in Koleen
following an illness of several weeks.
The deceased was born in Greene county and had resided
in the county all her life. For a number of years Mrs. Lucas lived in Linton,
but during the past ten years her home had been in Koleen. While in this city,
Mr. Lucas was a railroad section foreman.
Surviving are the husband, George A. Lucas, who is
reported in a critical condition at the family home; six children, Johnny and
Harvey Lucas of Chicago, Mrs. Flora Jones of Oolitie, Mrs. Bertha Hudson of
Koleen and Elmer and Anna Lucas at home; four sisters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Bee
Hunter, Mrs. Martha Goad of White Hawk, Okla., Mrs. Rosie Johnson of Solsberry
and Eliza Ramsey of Mineral; two brothers, Ira Fearnot of Koleen and Harvey

Judge Charles J. Lynch, aged 63 years, passed away at his
home in Bellaire about
Judge Lynch was a son of the late Attorney and Mrs. E. L.
Lynch of Woodsfield. He was born and reared in Woodsfield and soon after being
admitted to the bar, he went to Bellaire where he soon built up a good practice
in his profession, sheerly by force of individual ability and energy. Mr. Lynch
served two terms as Common Pleas Judge, of Belmont County, and declined a third
nomination to that office and retired to private practice. Through his contacts
in his professional life he made many friends, who are deeply grieved to learn
of his death.
Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Gail McKeever, of
Barnesville; one brother, Guy R. Lynch, of Woodsfield and three sisters Mrs.
Lucy Marshall, Mrs. W. F. Bertram and Miss Lucetta Lynch of Woodsfield.
Prosecuting Attorney Charles W. Lynch, of Woodsfield, is a nephew of the

Mr. Mann was well known in Woodsfield having spent his
earlier days near this community. He came from a pioneer Monroe County family
and was always held in high esteem. Funeral services were held Wednesday and

Marple, Joseph Marple

After an illness of many months, Joseph Marple passed away
at his home on Maple avenue last Thursday evening, January 30th,
death being due to the infirmities of age.
Deceased was born in Marshall County, W. Va., on
In 1893 he united with the Methodist Protestant Church at
Plainview, near Jackson Ridge, remaining a member of that church for more than
twenty years. During a meeting conducted by Miss Josephine Nichols he united
with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Woodsfield and remained a member of that
church until life s journey was over.
Mr. Marple was unmarried. However, he was a kind friend to
little children and to all others as well. One sister, Miss Mary Frances
Marple, of the home, survives. In the death of Mr. Marple there is severed a
daily association of three-quarter of a century between brother and sister,
each of whom looked after the needs of the other with devoted care. Needless to
say, under such circumstances, the one to go first is sadly missed.
Mr. Marple had resided on Maple avenue for thirty-five
years.
Funeral services were held from the late home Sunday

John W. Martin, well known and highly respected resident of
Washington-tp, died Monday evening at his home on Graysville R 1. He was about 75
years of age and had been ill for several months.
Funeral services were held Thursday forenoon at Pleasant
Ridge Church of Christ of which he had been a member for many years. Thos. A.
Christy conducted the religious services.
Besides his widow Mr. Martin is survived by four daughters
and two sons as follows: Mrs. Harry W. Conley, of Parkerton, Wyoming; Mrs. L.A.
Thompson, of Graham, Texas; Mrs. Robt. Thomas, in Jefferson county, Ohio; Mrs.
Ada Heddleson at home; Russel and Guy of Akron.
One child preceded him in death.
Mr. Martin was an industrious self-reliant citizen who will
be missed in his community as a good neighbor and friend. His family have a
heritage of character and service in his life, together with many pleasant
memories that will long be an inspiration to them.
McCurdy, George B. McCurdy

George B. McCurdy, former resident of Belmont, Ohio, died

Mr. McCurdy was a son of the
late ex-Commissioner and Mrs. Isaac McCurdy, of Laings, and grew to manhood in
that community. For several years before leaving for Iowa he was owner and
operator of the flour mill at Hannibal, Ohio.
Many friends in Monroe County
regret to learn of his death. He had been in poor health for several months
following a stroke of paralysis and attendant complications.
McFarland, Ella Magdalene McFarland nee Imhoff

Mrs. Ella Magdalene McFarland. Prominent resident of St.
Clairsville, died Thursday evening, January 16th, following an
illness of four weeks. She was an aunt of Congressman Lawrence Imhoff of St.
Clairsville and Washington.
She was born at Round Bottom, a daughter of Jacob and Sarah
Elizabeth Steiner Imhoff, early residents of that community. She was the wife
of William McFarland and was a member of the Presbyterian church at St.
Clairsville and active in the organization of that congregation.
Surviving are her husband and the following children: Earl
McFarland of St. Clairsville; Freda McFarland of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Olga
Harris of St. Clairsville; Beulah McFarland of Washington D.C.; Ray McFarland
of St. Clairsville; Everett McFarland, of Maynard, Ohio; Elizabeth McFarland of
Washington D.C.; and Wayne McFarland of St. Clairsville; also the following
brothers; Eugene Imhoff of Minerva, Ohio; Jacob Imhoff of Sterling, Ohio; John
Imhoff of Woodsfield, Ohio; and three sisters, Mrs. Thurman McKelvey of North
Jackson, Ohio; Mrs. Geo. Boetticher of Woodsfield, Ohio; and Mrs. Thomas
Tubaugh of Clarington, Ohio.

L. R. M'GREW PASSES AWAY
Funeral Rites Tuesday for
Resident of Washington Township.
Leander R. McGrew died at his
home in Washington township near Geneva at 7 a.m. Sunday following a paralytic
stroke a week ago.
At the time of his death the
deceased was fifty-four year [sic--years] old.
He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Peter McGrew and was born April 29, 1881 in Kentucky. On Jan. 10, 1908 he was
married to Miss Nancy E. Price and to this union twelve children were born,
eleven of which survive. they are Mrs. Opal Bohannon of Indianapolis, Harvey
McGrew of Shelbyville, John of Louisville, Ky.; Francis and Edward of Noble
township; and Susie, Mary, Delbert, Doris, Evelyn and Louise McGrew, all at
home.
Besides the widow and
children he leaves three grandchildren, two brothers; Henry and Isaac of
Louisville, Ky., and two sisters, Mrs. Janie Deane and Mrs. Lulu Denton of
Louisville, Ky.
The deceased was a member of
the Bethel Baptist church, where the funeral will be held Tuesday, March 31, at
2 o'clock with the Rev. John Shirley of near Rugby, Ind., officiating.
Internment [sic--interment] will be in the Milford cemetery.
McUlmar, Mack McUlmar

When a 1931 Ford coupe crashed into a concrete abutment of
a bridge on Route 7, two miles north of Fly, about
Mack McUlmar, 42, of New Martinsville, was killed, his head
being completely severed from his body. His brother-in-law, Albert Reef, 50, of
near Patton on Sardis, Route 2, was painfully injured. He was removed to the
Sistersville General Hospital where he received treatment for a crushed chest,
lacerations about the head, and scalp wounds. It is expected that he will
recover.
McUlmar and his family had been visiting at the Reef home
and on Wednesday morning the two men were in Woodsfield.
Sheriff Clarence Crawford and Coroner Paul Turner were at
the scene of the accident and conducted an investigation. A State Highway
patrolman, who was covering State Route No. 7 happened to come along soon after
the accident.
The body of McUlmar was removed to the late home in New
Martinsville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
As immediate survivors he leaves a wife and two children.
At this time Coroner Turner has not returned a finding in
regard to the accident. The car buckled when it hit the abutment and is a
complete wreck.
The accident happened on a
straightaway part of the road. There were no eye-witnesses at the time, their
being no other car either behind or ahead of the Reef car. Condition of the
grass at the side of the road indicated that no effort had been made to stop
the car.

ELI MERCER
DIES
IN VET
HOSPITAL
Word was received here yesterday of the
death of Eli Mercer, 40, formerly of Moundsville who several years ago moved to
Wheeling. He died in the Veterans
hospital at Aspinwall, PA., on Saturday from the
effects of an operation which he underwent in May at the hospital.
He was a member of the Moundsville
Baptist church and was a veteran of the World war.
Surviving are his wife, Mary, and his
son, Foster, both at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mercer, of New
Martinsville; six sisters, Mrs. George Berry of Cincinnati, Mrs. L. N. Romines of Hazard, Ky., and Mrs. Ralph Fox, Mrs. Pearl
Evans, Mrs. Raymond Gillespie and Miss Garnet Mercer, all of Moundsville.
Funeral services will be conducted at
the Grisell funeral home tomorrow afternoon at 2
o'clock with Rev. S. C. Dotson of Calvary Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial
cemetery.
Members of Earl Francis post of the
American Legion will conduct military rites for the deceased at the cemetery.

MRS. MILLER IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Mrs. Clarinda Miller, aged 68
years, wife of Thomas Miller of Wingett's Run neighborhood, died at her home on
Sunday at 3:45 a.m. following an illness of four weeks.
Funeral services will be held
at the Lebanon Church on Tuesday at 2* p.m. Interment will be made in the
church cemetery.
The body of Mrs. Miller will
be taken from the Doudna & McClure funeral parlors to the family home on
Monday evening. A short service will be held at the home on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Miller, a native of
Monroe County, was born on April 23, 1868. She had lived in the Wingett's Run
neighborhood for the . . . 25* years. Surviving are her husband to whom she was
married 42 years ago, and two sons and a daughter, Dewey Miller and Harry
Miller of the family home and Miss Mary Miller, a teacher in Washington County
schools who also lives in the family home.

The death of Mrs. Sarah E. Miller, aged 74, occurred Friday
evening at 8:35 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie McElroy, on
the Barnesville-Somerton pike. The deceased was born May 12, 1862, near Calais,
the daughter of Randolph and Jane Carpenter. She spent the greater part of her
life in Monroe County, moving to Barnesville 15 years ago, and eight years ago
Mr. and Mrs. Miller moved to a home on the Somerton pike. She was united in
marriage to Josiah Miller April 24, 1880, who preceded her in death May 22,
1934, and since his death she has resided with her daughter. Mrs. Miller was a
women of many fine qualities and will be greatly missed by her family and a
wide circle of friends. She leaves six daughters and a son, Mrs. Jennie McElroy
and Mrs. Lila Thornberry of Barnesville, Mrs. Clara Young and Mrs. Lucy Young,
Lewisville; Mrs. Blanche Friday, Cleveland; Mrs. Marie Sample, of Sawyerwood,
and Fred Miller, of Bucyrus; three sisters and a brother, Mrs. Mary L. Bunting,
Lewisville R.D.; Mrs. Maggie Kerr, Newark; Mrs. Viola Bristler, Steubenville,
and Orris Carpenter, of Lewisville R. D.; also 24 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by two
daughters. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at McElroy home
conducted by Rev. A. W. Deutsch, pastor of the Main Street M. E. Church. Interment
was made in Southern Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary E. Moffett, widow of John Moffett, died Monday
night
[June 8, 1936] at her home in
Union City, Indiana. Both she and her husband whose death occurred about
twenty-two years ago, were born and reared in Monroe County. Mr. Moffett was a
brother of Mrs. Clem Norris, of Woodsfield.
Mrs. Moffett is survived by two sons and two daughters,
also by three brothers, William, Edward, and John Norris, all three of
Woodsfield.
Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at Union
City. John and Will Norris left Woodsfield for Union City Wednesday to attend
the funeral.

Morris, Daniel Henry
Morris [12 July 1854 7 May 1936]
Daniel Henry, son of the late
Susan Hickman and William Morris, was born in Monroe County, Ohio, July 12,
1854 and departed this life May 7, 1936 at Bens Run, aged 81 years, 9 months
and 25 days. At the age of 12 years his parents came to West Virginia where
they resided the remainder of their lives mostly in Webster County.
The deceased was united in
marriage with Nancy Ann Eddy, November 19, 1882. To this union were born seven
children, namely Bessie (deceased), Belle at home, Mrs B A Locke of St Marys,
Ida Peryl at home, W R Morris of Huntington, Boyd Morris (deceased) and Eli D
Morris of Tampa Texas. Beside his wife and children he is survived by ten
grandchildren and three great grandchildren, also three sisters and four
brothers.
He was a member of the United
Brethren Church at Falls Mill, Tyler County.
Funeral services were
conducted by his pastor, Rev V J Lathey assisted by Rev Russell Clark of
Hastings, W VA. Interment was made in the Long Reach Cemetery.

L. P. Neuhart, aged 81 years, highly respected resident of
Woodsfield passed away at his home on Paul street about

Arnold, of Woodsfield, and Mrs. Elizabeth Rasche, of Burlington, Iowa, besides
a number of more distant relatives. A daughter preceded him in death a number
of years ago.
Mr. Neuhart was a member of the Neuhart & Lynch
Insurance Firm of Woodsfield and through that work contacted numerous people
and made many, many friends. He was also a member of Monroe Lodge No. 189 F.
& A. M.; the local Eastern Star Chapter; Woodsfield K. of P. Lodge; and
Woodsfield Lodge No. 377, I.O.O.F. As long as his health permitted he was a
regular attendant at all the services of St. Paul s Evangelical Church, of
which he was a member for many years.

Miss Opal Norris, aged about 43 years, passed away Sunday
evening
[ March 15, 1936] at the
state hospital at Athens, following a short illness due to an attack of
pneumonia.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Norris,
of Eastern avenue, Woodsfield; one sister, Mrs. Morton Wilson, of Martins
Ferry; and two brothers Dr. James Norris, of Cleveland and Laird Norris, of
Canton, besides a number of other relatives and many friends.
She was a faithful member of the Woodsfield Methodist
Episcopal Church and for several years served as a member of the choir, having
good musical talent.
Funeral services were held at the home at

Word has been received here of the death of John D,
Oblinger, aged about 75 years, which occurred at his home in Lancaster, Pa.,
last Friday [March 13, 1936].
Among those surviving are one sister Mrs. Virginia
Hoeffler, of South Main street. Mr. Oblinger left Woodsfield when a young man,
but is kindly remembered by a number of the older residents of this place.
Parsons, Orion Parsons
Spirit of Democracy,
Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
Orion Parsons, 35, of Akron, was burned to death and
William Parker, 29, of Detroit sustained serious burns in a traffic crash at
Parson s auto crashed into a truck owned by the Bowser
Sales & Trading company of Sistersville, but operated out of the branch store
at Clarington. The truck, broken down, had been left at the side of the road
with flares set upon the highway, according to the report of Monroe county
authorities who investigated.
For some unexplained reason Parson s car crashed into the
truck. Immediately after the crash the auto took fire and Parson s was burned
to death. Parker was thrown out, a fact to which he undoubtedly owed his life,
though he sustained painful burns and a fractured right knee. He was taken to
the Bellaire hospital for medical care.
The body of Parsons was taken to Rush funeral home at
Sardis and later sent to Akron for burial.
The accident was investigated by Trooper H. H. French,
Sheriff Clarence Crawford and Coroner Paul Turner.
Israel Fagert and his son G. C. Fagert, who reside near the
crash and rushed from their home but were unable to rescue Parsons.
There were no eye witnesses to the accident, as the crew of
the truck had temporarily left the scene.

DEATH OF INFANT
A daughter born to Mr. and
Mrs. Albert Paulus, of East Marietta St., Saturday, December 5th, died at the
home, Thursday morning, December 10th. The mother was the former Miss Imogene
Young, of near Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at
the home, Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. Henry Fox,
pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Church.
Pearson, Josephine Pearson

Miss Josephine Pearson passed away at the home of her
sister Mrs. T. B. Rouse on North Main street about
Surviving are two sisters Mrs. T. B. Rouse, of Woodsfield,
and Mrs. Scott Wilson, of Somerton. A sister, Miss Nannie Pearson, preceded her
in death a few years ago. Miss Pearson was also a sister to the late A. J.
Pearson, Congressman from this district and Capt. W. H. Pearson, of South Carolina.
Miss Pearson spent practically her entire life in
Woodsfield, with the exception of a few years in Lorain, Ohio. She was highly
respected and honored by all who knew her. She was a member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church of Woodsfield.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Rouse
home in charge of Rev. Herbert C. White, pastor of the local M. E. Church.
Following the services the remains were taken to Beallsville and burial was
made in the Beallsville cemetery.
Pencoski, John Pencoski

Woodsfield, Ohio, dated,
John Pencoski, 28, of Powhatan, was fatally injured in an
auto wreck Sunday evening [
Pencoski was rushed to Bellaire hospital, and was
pronounced dead there. His body was described as all broken up. The driver
escaped with cuts and bruises and after receiving medical treatment, he was
taken to Woodsfield pending an inquest to be conducted by Coroner Turner.
Pencoski was a miner and had but recently come to Powhatan
from Pennsylvania. Little or nothing is known of his family, and final
arrangements was delayed pending an effort to locate relatives.
At the hearing before the Coroner, there was not enough
evidence to justify holding Yavor. It is expected further investigation will
follow.

Had Been Ill for Two
Years; Husband and
Children Survive
Mrs. Angie Pope, wife of
Clarence Pope, passed away at her home near Fenns Sunday morning at 1:10
o'clock.
Mrs. Pope had been in failing
health for the past two years.
She was the daughter of John and
Lucy Bolser and was born in Vernon, Ind., March 10, 1880, being at the time of
her death 55 years old.
Survivors are her husband;
mother, one son, Dalton; five sisters, Mrs. Orpha Kirby, Columbus, Ind., Mrs.
Alma Mortensen, Mrs. Mary Callatin and Miss Lena Bolser all of Vernon, and Mrs.
Julia Turaska, of St. Bernice, Ind.; one half brother, Harry Thickston of North
Vernon; seven step children, Earl Pope, Shelby township, Ora Pope, Russell
Pope, Mrs. Opal Crisp and Mrs. Bert Thompson all of Shelbyville, Mrs. Frank
Hutchenson,* Hendricks township and Mrs. Marie Perkins of California.
Funeral services will be held
at the home of her mother, Mrs. Lucy Bolser, in Vernon, Ind., Tuesday afternoon
at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the Vernon cemetery.
A short service was held this
morning at the late home with the Rev. D. A. Weida,** pastor of the Nazarene

Millard Hubbard, of West Marietta street this Thursday but no funeral
arrangements have been made at this time.
Pryor, Lawrence D. Pryor

Lawrence D. Pryor, of Barberton, Ohio, died at his home
there Monday evening [
Mr. Pryor was a former resident of the Hartshorn Ridge
community moving to Barberton about fifteen years ago as did also his parents
Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Pryor. He is survived by his wife, one son Carl, of
Whittier, Calif.; a daughter Mae, in Chicago; one brother Elmer, of Kenmore,
Ohio, and one sister Mrs. Charles Haught, of Paris, Ohio. His aged mother also
survives him.
Mr. Pryor was a man of pleasing personality and his death
is mourned by scores of friends in Monroe County, as well as by many who
learned to know him in and near Barberton and Akron.
Reed, James Reed

James, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Reed of
Woodsfield Rt 4, died in Martins Ferry hospital about
As Mr. Reed let the horses out of the barn, one ran past
James, kicking him on the side of the head. He was taken to Martins Ferry
Hospital that evening where it was found that his skull had been fractured by
the blow.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Reed: nine
sisters, Misses Virginia, Hazel, Carrie, Edith, Bernice, Helen, Geneva, Mary
and Nira Lee and two brothers, William and Joseph, all of the home, besides a
host of other relatives and friends.
Short funeral services were held at the late home Monday
afternoon at

Roxie Roome, 38, who was killed Saturday night in an automobile accident near
Plainfield, will be held at 2 'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home, 4051
Eastern avenue. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery. Mrs. Roome was born in
Indianapolis, was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School and was a member of
the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was married to William J.

KILLED IN AUTO CRASH
Mrs. Roxie Roome of
Indianapolis, a niece of Elmer Rigby of Edinburg, was killed Saturday in an
auto accident according to word received here this morning.
Mrs. Roome was killed on the
highway between Plainfield and Indianapolis and funeral rites will be held at
her home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mrs. Sarah Rosenlieb, aged 59 years, wife of Joseph
Rosenlieb, of Trail Run, succumbed in the family home about
She arose as was her custom at an early hour on Wednesday
morning and was about her work when she suffered a severe pain in the back of
her head, and passed away in a short time.
The family were making preparations to honor her with a
birthday party on the next day.
Mrs. Rosenlieb is survived by her husband and the following
children: Albert Rosenlieb, Dale and Fred, of Trail Run; Mrs. Mildred Petty, of
Antioch; Hazel, of Akron; Lula Belle and Francis at home. Several sisters and
brothers also survive.
Brothers and sisters of the deceased are John Angus and
Pearly Angus of Wheeling; Clarmont Angus of Sardis; Mrs. William Ridgeway of
Trail Run; Mrs. Arthur Thorn and Mrs. Pitt Holdren of New Matamoras; and Mrs.
E. E. Boeigner of Akron.
The deceased was a member of
the Ev. Church at Trail Run.
Sawyers, Mrs. John Sawyers

Atty. John K. Sawyers, Jr. received word early Saturday notifying
him of the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. John K. Sawyer, Sr., at her home
near Maryville, Missouri. He left at once taking a plane from Columbus, but her
death occurred at
Deceased was about 65 years of age and is survived by her
husband and several children. She was a native of Harrison County, born and
reared near Cadiz, but for many years was a resident of the Maryville
community.
Her husband was a native of Monroe County, born near
Altitude, and Mrs. Sawyers accompanied him here on occasional visits.
Funeral services were held at Maryville of Tuesday
afternoon. Among those attending were Mrs. J. K. Sawyers, Jr. and Webb Tennant,
who left Woodsfield by automobile shortly after Mrs. Sawyers had departed for
Columbus.

Quaker City, April 27--Vance
Schell, for many years a prominent Barnesville resident, passed away Sunday at
his home on Quaker City R.D. 4. He had been ill for several months, his
condition being critical for some time.
He was born in Miltonsburg
April 15, 1863, the son of George and Martha* Thomas Schell. He was married to
Barbara Kirsch in 1902** and moved to Barnesville where he made his home until
two years ago when he moved to Quaker City R.D. 4.
He is survived by his widow
and one daughter, Mrs. Earl Baker, and two grandchildren, of Quaker City R.D.
4; one brother, Joseph Schell of Miltonsburg. Four brothers and five sisters
are deceased.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday afternoon at the home and burial will be made in the Southern
cemetery at Barnesville.

Simpson Held Sunday Eve-
ning at Deer Creek
Mary Cyrene Morris was born
August 31, 1871 and passed away July 17, 1936. She was the second oldest child
of Joseph and Hannah Windle* Morris. Her mother died when she was a young girl
and she cared for the younger brothers and sisters.
On March 3, 1889 she was
united in marriage to Hiram Maurice Simpson. To this union were born 7
children.
Her husband died in 1912,
leaving her with three small children. After his death Mrs. Simpson never
faltered but with the help of her son Emery made a home for her family.
She was a kind mother, one
whom her children will miss greatly.
On June 18, 1925 she united
with the Lily Dale Church of Christ and was baptized by the Rev. J. M. Hattel.
Although she wasn't able to
attend church very often she lived a true christian life. Surviving are the
children: William of Tell City, Emery at home, Oliver of near Pittsburg, Pa.,
Mrs. Mamie Willgus of Troy, Mrs. Nora Cotton of Louisville, Ernest of Eckerty,
Indiana and Mrs. Ida McMahan of Boyd. Two brothers Emery Morris of Evansville,
Harmon Morris of Tell City, one sister Mrs. Nancy Kelly of Chicago, Illinois.
Two half-brothers Wallace and Larry of Illinois. Two step-sisters and one
stepbrother of Dale, 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held
Sunday evening at 4:00 o'clock at the Deer Creek Baptist Church with burial in
the church cemetery by the side of her husband. Rev. Grismore was in charge of
the service.

avenue, Moundsville, W. Va., died at
Deceased is survived by her husband and six sons, W. M.

Reader; Charles W., J. G. and Whitlaw South of Moundsville, two daughters, Mrs.
Emma Tucker of Moundsville, and Mrs. Gay May Conner of Graysville; a brother,
Christopher Hartline, of Woodlands; and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Howell
and Mrs. Hannah Hunnell, of Woodsfield and Mrs. George Baker of Willard.
Mrs. Spicer was a member of the Christian Church. The
remains were removed from the Grisell funeral home to the late home Tuesday
evening, where services were held at
Mrs. Spicer was born and grew to womanhood near Cameron,
Monroe County, and was the oldest of sixteen children. She is kindly remembered
by a number of present and former older residents of eastern Monroe County.

Helen Virginia Stewart,
11, Dies After Long
Illness
Helen Virginia Stewart, 11 years old, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Stewart of Acton, died at the home of her parents Saturday following
a long illness.
Boggstown cemetery.
The Stewart girl was born in Shelbyville. Her father
operates a garage at Acton.
Survivors, besides the parents, are a sister, Martha
Stewart, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Moore, 27 West South street, Shelbyville, Ind., and Mrs. Nannie Stewart, 640 West
South street, Shelbyville.

Mrs. Daniel Stoffel, 29, of Harriettsville, died in
Memorial Hospital, Marietta, on Thursday morning [
Surviving the deceased are her husband and five children
between the ages of two and twelve years.
The body was taken to Harriettsville where funeral services
were held and interment made.

Mrs. Nancy Thornberry, aged 86 years, passed away at her
home on South Main street about
She is survived by five daughters and three sons as
follows; Dr. A. E. Thornberry, of Cambridge; Mrs. W. V. Walton and Mrs. Harry
Ogle, of Columbus; Mrs. Hallie Straight, Mrs. Harry Troutman, Mrs. E. E.
Richner, R. N. Thornberry and Charles Thornberry, all of Woodsfield. Several
grandchildren and a number of other relatives also survive.
Mrs. Thornberry was born in the Antioch community and spent
her entire life in Monroe County. She was a woman of many fine qualities and
had made for herself scores of friends by whom she was loved, honored and
respected. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her as she was always
kind and good to everyone. She will be sadly missed not only in the home but by
the entire community.
Her husband, the late A. E. Thornberry preceded her in death
several years ago.

BUCHANAN
Phillip Weber, an aged resident
of near Lewisville, passed away at his home near Lewisville late Sunday night
after several weeks' illness. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, one
daughter, Mrs. F.M. Fisher of Lewisville, two sons John H. Weber of Buchanan,
and A.C. Weber of Woodsfield, and a host of other friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Buchanan Presbyterian
church and interment was made in the Buchanan Friendship cemetery.
Whitmore, Mary F. Whitmore nee Rausch

Mrs. Mary F. Whitmore, wife of Charles B. Whitmore, of the
Wheeling Island and one of the most active members of St. Alphonus Catholic
Church, died Sunday evening [
Mrs. Whitmore was born
Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore went to Wheeling in 1918 and have
been prominent residents of that city continuously since. Mrs. Whitmore became
a communicant of St. Alphonsus church and was identified with all units of the
parish. She was a member of the L.C.B.A. Branch 451, the Order of St. Francis,
the Christian Mothers society and the Altar society. She was also a member of
the Purgatorian society of the Woodsfield Church.
Mrs. Whitmore is survived by her husband and one daughter
Mrs. Gertrude Philipps, of Weston, W. Va., one grandchild, Betty Phillips;
three brothers, Clem J. Rausch, of Woodsfield; Leonard and Fred Rausch of
Nowata, Oklahoma; and five sisters Miss Ida Rausch, Wheeling; Mrs. Minnie
Schumacher and Mrs. Marguerite Wurm, both of Millvale, Pa.; Mrs. Rose Brooks,
of Woodsfield, Ohio; Mrs. Peter Calles, of Los Angeles, Calif.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at
Mrs. Whitmore formerly resided in Woodsfield and has many
friends here who are saddened by her death.
Yoho, William Eugene Yoho

Yoho, William Eugene , 89,
well-known Ohio county farmer and a resident of Peter's Run road for the past
44 years, succumbed to an illness of five months duration at 6:08 o'clock,
Sunday evening, at his home. Mr. Yoho was born in Monroe county, Ohio, August
13, 1847, a son of Jacob and Christina Stein Yoho. He came to Ohio county
nearly half a century ago and had engaged in farming up until the time of his
illness. His wife, Sarah E. Smith Yoho preceded him in death 12 years ago.
Surviving are three sons,
five daughters, two half-brothers, three half-sisters, 28 grandchildren and 39
great grandchildren. The body was removed to the Crider funeral home where
services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. A. Coleman Brown,
pastor of the Elm Grove Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will follow
in Stone Church cemetery.
