Mrs. Rachel [sic] Cariens
Rachael Schell daughter of
Henry and Mary Schell was born in Monroe county, Ohio, August 21, 1846. She was
the third child in a family of twelve* children, of whom John, Hiram, Samuel,
Jacob, Thomas, George and Mrs. Douglas Vaughn are still living.
She moved with her parents to
Wayne county, Ill., in 1853 where she met and married Edgar P. Cariens, October
10th,** 1870. To this union six children were born; three of whom died in
infancy. A. "Rate" and Jesse and Mrs. Louis Cates survive their mother.
The husband died in 1905. Since that time she has had live with her Edgar
Cariens, a grandson, Earl Schell and Cloyd Withrow, all of whom she learned to
love almost as her own. The last five years her daughter Mrs. Louis Cates and
family had made their home with her.
Aunt Rachael, as we all
called her, departed this life Dec. 26th, 1923 at the age of 77 years, 4 months
and 5 days. She was sick only about thirty-six hours. Besides her children she
leaves to mourn their loss, six brothers, one sister, seven grandchildren, five
great grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends.
Aunt Rachael will be greatly
missed in her home community. She was a kind neighbor and was always glad to
help whenever it was possible for her to do so. Many will remember her for her kind
deeds. And even though she is gone a fond memory of her lingers still.
Funeral services were held at
the home Friday afternoon by Eld. W. D. Crippin. Interment is in the Cariens
cemetery.

Boyd Morris
Killed Outright
In Automobile Accident
Boyd* Morris was killed out back of
Sistersville last Thursday evening. He
was the son of Dan Morris of Arvilla, this county,
and a brother of Mrs. Brady Locke and County Supt. Ida Peryl
Morris of this city.
We append the details of the tragedy as
related by the Sistersville Review, which says:
"One man was killed, another
injured and three escaped by jumping, when the automobile truck in which they
were riding plunged over a 60 foot embankment at the head of Wolf Penn [sic--Pen],
yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock.
The dead man is Boyd Moris, of Benton street, this
city. Frank Rapp, also of this city,
sustained fracture of four ribs but his condition is not regarded as
serious. John Wagner, George Tice and
Charles Merekle escaped hurts by jumping.
All five men employed by Heddleson & Rapp, oil well contractors, were returning
to this city from their employment on the Heddleson
lease. Rapp was driving the
machine. As they were coming off a hill
the truck swerved suddenly plunging off the side of the road down the steep
embankment. The truck turned over twice
on its plunge down the hill side.
The three men who jumped went to the
assistance of Morris. He pinned beneath
the machine and had been instantly killed.
His head was crushed almost to a pulp.
Rapp sustained the fracture of four ribs and last night suffered
considerable from the shock. He was
brought late into the city this afternoon on the 12 o'clock street car from the
home of Pete Owens where he was taken following the accident. The body of Morris was brought to the
Sistersville Undertaking parlors last night.
Morris was well known in the city and
news of the wreck spread rapidly throughout the city. Rapp resides in South Chelsea street and for a time last night fears were entertained for
his recovery. Morris during the first
season of the Industrial league was one of the premier pitchers of the Garage
Baseball club. He also pitched in one or
two games last season and was popular with the fans.
