Adams, Eleanor

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated April 27, 1899

Sister Eleanor Adams was born January 4, 1829, and departed this life April 21, 1899. She was seventy years, three months and seventeen days old. Sister Adams was baptized into the Church of Christ at a very early age and remained a consistent member until death. She was married to Thomas J. Adams, November 8, 1845, which union was blessed with six sons and two daughters all living except one daughter. Her last days were spent at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wittenbrook, where her spirit took its flight to the God who gave it. Sister Adams was a faithful, earnest, zealous, christian woman. She always made it a point in life to attend the worship. She loved the communion of Saints. O, how pleasant it is, when we have to part with loved ones to be permitted to look with an eye of faith into the Revelation of God and view the home of the sou, where there is no more pain or sorrow. We say to those bereft of a mother and grandmother, your truest and best friend, cheer up. While her body sleeps in the silent city of the dead, her pure spirit is gone to enjoy the victory gained by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. How happy, O how happy, thus to die!

Short services were held at the home of Mrs. Wittenbrook by the writer assisted by Elder Baker. The remains were then taken to the church in Woodsfield where regular services were conducted by the writer, after which they were laid to rest in the town cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn.

Death, that silent messenger, came into our neighborhood and plucked its brightest gem, Albert Bandi. He had been suffering for a long time from consumption. Finally the end came on the afternoon of April 4. Albert was one of those fortunate characters of whom it can be truly said, none knew him but to love him. Early in life he became united with the German Evangelical church and lived a consistent member up to the time of his death. A true teacher by profession. His enjoyment was greatest when doing the most good in the school room. In order to prepare himself better for his calling, he attended the National Normal university at Lebanon, Ohio. Beard, Jane

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 18, 1900

The quietude of the relatives and friends on West Marietta street were intensified Thursday afternoon on account of the death of one of its oldest as well as one of its best respected citizens, Mrs. Jane Beard. She was taken ill with pneumonia Monday which rapidly made its way to supremacy over her natural strength and on Thursday afternoon she quietly and peacefully passed from this into the life beyond. She was 71 years of age lacking one day. She had been a member of the M.E. church for many years.

Mrs. Beard, whose maiden name was Okey, was united in marriage to Francis M. Beard December 17, 1857. To them were born two children one son and one daughter who with the father still remain. In their long married life of 43 years death enters the family for the first time removing the dear wife and mother. Mrs. Beard was firmly attached to her home and family and her family to her. Her cars were of her home. No effort or sacrifice was too great for her in their behalf. She loved them tenderly and with a devotion that spoke volumes of goodness of heart. This heart that throbbed for others woes and rejoiced with others happiness, beats no more. The hands that never tired doing acts of kindness and administering needs to the afflicted, are now folded for the last time across the breasts of this noble christian lady friend and neighbor. Her loss is irreparable. The family have the sympathy of all, especially do we sympathize with the father and husband who for many years has been sorely afflicted, having lost the use of his lower limbs. His companion in life is gone. The one on whom he leaned upon for special help has passed into the beautiful beyond. Be of good cheer, it may only be another slight affliction which will make the future meeting and the future life the brighter.

The funeral took place Saturday afternoon from the residence of Rev. J. W. Wier, pastor of the M.E. church, conducting the services. The remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground near Woodsfield.

Brock, Nancy Brock

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated June 15, 1899

(Stafford) Our people were terribly shocked Saturday evening to receive the sad news of the sudden death of Mrs. Nan Brock who with Mr. Brock left their home less than a week ago to visit friends in Woodsfield. It is true fears were entertained she would not regain her old time health and energy, but we all hoped she would return benefitted and able again to dispense the hospitality of the home she made so charming by her genial presence. Many friends will attend funeral at Woodsfield, and all hearts go out in profound sympathy to the invalid husband who has lost the tendered and most devoted of companions and nurses. Not a person in this community but realizes with sorrow their loss of a kind friend and neighbor. She not only entertained with cordiality the rich and affluent, but every afflicted and lowly sufferer was the recipient of loving kindness. Like the Master she served she went about doing good. And years will pass away before her goodness ceases to be the theme on every tongue. If the veil had been lifted and we had known our cheerful good-by was the last farewell, how dark the hour would have been. We look this morning where one short week ago she sat beside the now desolate husband, and waved us a glad good morning. This morning instead of the fluttering white hand the solemn crape tells of the life and light that has gone from the happy home and blinding tears blots the page was we write.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated November 23, 1899

Bullah Oma Carpenter, daughter of Mrs. O. P. Carpenter, died November 14, 1899, aged 7 years and 6 months. Bulah was a sweet winsome chid, her mamma s pride and joy. Always kind and helpful to her little brother Hilary, who is all that is left to his mamma. Bright beyond her years, she was quick to see if mamma was troubled and endeavored by her cherry prattle and little wags of helpfulness to lighten her grief. At school she was especially bright of one of her years, cheerfully doing the task assigned by teacher, to whom she was always smiling and sweet, always prepared for recitations, always doing more than was assigned. Such children make the world brighter by the sunshine of their presence, and to give them up is hard. But we must yield sweet Bulah to Him who said Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven. On the afternoon of the 14th she was taken to our beautiful cemetery and laid to rest beside her papa who was taken four years ago, and whom she so often remembered with her tribute of flowers.

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated March 30, 1899

Men do not have to grow old to die Benjamin Carrick, born August 7, 1871, died rather unexpectedly at his home near Stafford March 20, 1899. In young manhood, with a wife and two helpless children, he was called hence. Such providence reminds us that in the midst of life we are in death. But what matters about the time of death s coming if persons are always living in Christ who gave Himself for us; that He might redeem us from all iniquity; and purify unto Himself a peculiar people. The family of the deceased have nearly all, preceded him to the eternal world. He leaves a sister and a brother and many friends. After brief services at the home his remains were interred in the beautiful cemetery at Stafford.

With sadness we record the death of Miss Ethel Rosetta Covan, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Covan, who died at Sardis Sunday May 7, 1899, aged 14 years, 10 months and 25 days. She was a great sufferer of consumption for some time, but all that medical skill and kind attention could do was in vain. She leaves to mourn her loss a father, mothers, three sisters, four brothers and many other relatives and friends. Many are the generous and noble deeds that stand out as enduring monuments all along the pathway of Ethel s life. No one knew her but to love her. Always ready to relieve distress she was the impersonation of all those virtues so highly commended. The open hand was always extended to relieve the wants of the needy. The bright smile and the cheerful laugh were hers always. Ethel was a consistent member of the Sunday school and junior league. Our hearts grow sad when we know how we shall miss her, but our tears are tears of joy for we know our loss is transient and she gains immortal bliss. Danford, A. P. Danford

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated July 20, 1899

Following is an account of the sad and unexpected death of A. P. Danford as given by our Beallsville correspondent.

A sad occurrence took placed with A. P. Danford Wednesday, July 13. In early morning Mr. Danford went to his field to plow corn. He plowed probably not more than an hour as was indicated by the work done. He failed to come home for dinner, but it given no uneasiness to his wife or mother as they thought he had gone to the home of his son Arthur who lives on the farm. Super time came and he put in no appearance. The family supposed him still at the home of his son. Night came but no Danford. They waited until they began to get uneasy and they organized a searching party and searched the field. About eleven o clock at night they found him sitting by a tree unconscious, with his jaws set and almost no pulse or circulation. Dr. Keesor was called to him in the field but could do nothing. The diagnosis of the doctor was apoplexy. Mr. Danford lived until three o clock Thursday morning when he died.

The deceased was 49 years and 11 days old. He was born in Belmont county and in very early boyhood when he and his parents became residents of near Beallsville where he lived until his death. He united with the M.E. church at the early age of thirteen and remained one of the main pillars of the church through his entire life. He will be sadly missed in the church and in all society in which he mingled. He leaves an aged mother, wife , two sons and one daughter. Mr. Danford was a man of more than ordinary ability and was entrusted with positions of responsibility in the church, all of which he filled with credit to himself and those whom he served. He had been secretary of the farmers institute at Beallsville from the time of its organization until last winter when he was elected president. In a large degree the success of the institute was due to his untiring efforts and will be largely missed in his work as well as in other positions. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lemmon his pastor, and was very largely attended.

Foreaker, Elisabeth A. Foreaker

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated March 30, 1899

Once more the grim monster of Death has visited our neighborhood claiming for its victim one of the oldest residents Elisabeth A. Foreaker was born May 27, 1818 in Hardy county and departed this life March 18, 1899, aged 80 years, 11 months and 21 days. She was the daughter of William C. Edington and together with her parents emigrated to Fayette county, Pa., in 1832. May 10, 1838 she was married to William Foreaker, and on May 11 of the same year they moved to Gournsey county, where they lived about four years. They then emigrated to their present home in Perry township Monroe county. To them were born 9 children, seven boys and two girls. Foreaker, Elisabeth (obit 2) Foreaker

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated April 13, 1899

Death has been in our midst and called to her eternal home in heaven of our oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, Mrs William Foreaker, Sr, nee Edington. Her death occurred at her home near Graysville March 18,. 1899. Such a gift had nature in her bounty bestowed on the subject of this sketch that she was universally loved by all and although her earthly destiny was sunk to the dust, and her glorious faculties trodden under earth, yet the full of inborn riches of love to all living will never fade away as long as her acquaintances and friends retain the faculty of remembrance within the bounds which nature hath assigned.

The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, march 27, 1818, and was aged 80 years, 11 months and 21 days. She came from her Pennsylvania home to Guernsey county, Ohio, in 1838. She resided at that place for a short time. From there she moved to Monroe county in 1840 and has been a resident here ever since. Mrs. Foreaker became a member of the M. E. Church at an early age in which church she lived a consistent member until her death. She was a good woman and was careful in training her children. She was always at her post of duty in family cares.

The recollections of the Graysville citizens of her susceptibility from the first will abide to the last with them in affections. She did faithfully whatsoever duties were enjoined upon her in life and retained her reasoning faculties to the last when she valiantly passed the threshold of existence.

On the 10th day of May, 1838, while still in Pennsylvania she was led to the altar by William Foreaker, who shared her joy and sorrows through the days of her youth, on toward the autumn of life, when he was left alone to survive her. Mrs. Foreaker had been ailing for some weeks but her friends did not think she was seriously ill neither was she until a few days before she expired when they began to fear that her disease was reaching a dangerous degree. Just before she did she express her willingness to go, as her true prospects were bright. After it was evident that she must die, her friends seemed reluctant about giving her up; even knowing that she would be better off by far than if she was permitted to remain with us. Of course it is hard to part with her, knowing that we shall meet her no more on this side of the grave, but it is consoling to know that if we live a righteous life we will meet her at God s right hand in heaven. I can imagine I see Grandma standing just within the pearly gates with her left hand beckoning us on toward that haven of eternal rest, while her right hand is extended toward us as if to clasp hands and welcome us home.

The funeral services took place at 1 p.m. March 20, and was conducted by Rev. Cope of Antioch. She leaves a husband and six sons and a host of sympathetic friends to mourn her departure. One boy and two daughters ere this has given her a glorious welcome such I hope she will be able to give us when we reach the new Jerusalem.

Griffith, Abraham J. Griffith

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated September 21, 1899

Abraham J. Griffith, the subject of this notice, was born in Center township, Monroe County, Ohio, March 3, 1839, and died August 25, 1899. In yearly youth Brother Griffith was converted and united with the Baptist church and remained a faithful and consistent christian until the Master called him from labor to reward. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss an aged mother, one son, four brothers and one Sister; his earthly companion having preceded him to the better land one year ago, and the spirits of his four angelic babies having taken their flight to the bright sunny land many years ago.

In the sudden departure of our death brother to the land of eternal rest, we feel that society has lost a worthy member, and the family circle a dutiful son, a loving brother and a kind and affectionate father. How sad it is to think that our beloved brother with whom we have so long enjoyed the blissful fellowship of brotherly union is no more. For more than half a century we have associated in the holy bonds of brotherly affection without the severing of a single fraternal tie, and this sudden bereavement falls upon us like a thunderbolt from the serenity of a summer Sky, rending our hearts asunder. It seems impossible to realize that our dear brother is gone from earth to that bourne from when no traveler returns. But while we are thus left lonely and sorrowing over the loss of one so dear, we sorrow not as those who have no hope, for our hearts are comforted by the blessed assurance that our dear brother is one to that land of eternal sunshine, where no farewells are heard; and where he will be permitted to partake of the fruit of the tree of life and bask in the bright crystal river which flows through the City of God.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yea henceforth they shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Craig in an able and impressive manner. The remains were consigned to their last resting place in the Neuhardt Cemetery followed by a large concourse of sorrow friends and neighbors.

Hagarman, Mary

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 18, 1900

The death of Mrs. Mary Hagarman occurred shortly after midnight Thursday. Her illness, which has been noticed from time to time by the writer, dates from injuries received by being run over by a horseman some fifteen months ago, as she was returning from church at night. Through all her lingering and painful illness she had the tenderest care fro her three sons and two daughters who are thus deprived of their only remaining parent, their father John Hagarman, having died several years since, leaving the rearing of the family to a frail woman, never strong, but well was she repaid for her motherly care, for never was tenderer care, or more unselfish devotion rendered a dying mother as months and months she treaded silently and uncomplainingly the winepress.

But at last softly, peacefully, gently as an infant rests upon its mother s breast, her poor frail, weary bark glided off into the silent sea. Mrs. Hagarman was extensively connected being a Miss Reed of Swazey, and notwithstanding the terrible condition of th road there were a greater number attended her funeral than were ever present here on a like occasion. The remains were kept until Sunday when at 10 o clock they were taken to the Christian church where services ere conducted by Elder Wade of Quaker city after which they were laid in the Stafford cemetery by the side of her husband.

A Man Cremated in a Burning Barn

(Caldwell-Republican Journal.)

Last Wednesday morning about 8 o clock Homer Rucker, who resides on his mother s farm north of Summerfield discovered his mother s barn on fire. He had gone to the barn after breakfast and harnessed the horses, and while they were eating hay was digging some post holes. It was while thus engaged that he discovered the fire, and rushing to the barn succeeded in getting one of the horses out, but could not save the other. He succeeded in dragging out a spring wagon, however, and while so doing heard some one moaning in the hay loft. By this time the other members of the family were on hands and it was discovered that Frank Hardesty, aged 27 years, an epileptic, and a nephew of Mrs. Rucker, who with his father was staying at his aunt s, was missing but nothing could be done to save him. As soon as the sides of the barn fell in the poor fellows body was dragged from the burning building, presenting a most horrifying appearance, Just how the fire started is not known but by expressions made by young Hardesty on previous days it is thought that he fired the barn intentionally and committed suicide.

Among other things he said that he did not want his body taken back to Duncan s Falls, his former home, for burial, and that he would like to be cremated. He had just eaten his breakfast and went directly from the house to the barn. The barn was a new one built last year and in addition to the horse that was burned Mrs. Rucker lost all her hay and grain, and some farming implements. The loss is from $300 to $500 with no insurance.

He was frank and obliging and possessed in an unusual degree those fascinating qualities which make and hold friends. He was firm in his convictions yet without being offensive. The subject of this obituary was born near Rockport, Wood county, W.Va., on the 23d of October, 1879, and died near Cantwell, Richie county, W.Va., on the 17th day of October, 1899. If Forrest had lived six days longer he would have been 20 years old, just entering into manhood and in blooming youth. This reminds us very forcibly of the scripture saying that in the midst of life we are in death. Forrest was a good, kind, truthful boy, and was respected by all who knew him. His parents, John M. and Martha Jackson, were born and raised in Center township, Monroe county, Ohio, and have many relatives and friends here who deeply sympathize with them in their sad bereavement. The remains were laid to rest in the Christian cemetery near Cantwell.

Nettie, daughter of Sterling and Susan F. Jones, was born Oct. 9,1880, and died at her home May 1, 1899, aged 18 years, 6 months and 22 days. She had been a sufferer of consumption for the past six months. She leaves a father, mother, three sisters and one brother to mourn her departure. Nettie was a flower of the family and loved by all who knew her. She was always bright and happy, like a sunbeam. She was a dutiful daughter, an affectionate sister and loving schoolmate. No effort that loving hands could make was spared; no remedy that medical skill could suggest was left untried. But death has claimed its own. The blessed assurance she gave her mother, just prior to her death, of going to a better world, sweetens the dregs in a bitter cup. Ths in the morning of womanhood she was cut down. Nettie will not only be missed at home but by all who knew her. Our hearts are filled with sorrow when we realize that one whose life might have been useful is cut off, yet we believe in the glorious springtime of the resurrection this lovely blossom will bloom afresh in that land where they is no death.

After suffering with it about three weeks she took spinal fever which resulted in her death.

Her remains were laid to rest April 27, in St. Jacob s church-yard. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bodmer of Hannibal. She leaves to mourn the irreparable loss, father, mother, three sisters, four brothers and many friends and relatives: one sister having preceded her to that eternal home in infancy. Alas! That her terrestrial life has been so brief should be a warning to us for when we are in the full bloom and vigor of life and enjoying the pleasures of this life the Master may call us home. Therefore we should watch and be prepared for we know not the day nor the hour wherein the Son Man cometh.

Martin, Clara Blanche Martin,

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated March 2, 1899

The sunniest sky may soon be overcast by darkest shadows; the happiest home filled with sorrow. It was so with daughter, Clara Blanche Martin, who was born June 15, 1887, died t Harrietsville January 27, 1899. She was one of those bright, winsome girls, lady-like much beyond her years. At home she was most ind and obedient, the one blooming flower of the home, since her brother died three years ago, until a few weeks before her death another sweet bud of promise came to share with her the blessings o home. At school or in the town she was always kind and gentle. Her friends were legion, her enemies none. Such a life is not measured by seasons or years, but by te motive power of pure influence ever operative on earth till Heaven and earth shall flee away from Him in whose presence all shall stand. Her chair in the home may be craped and vacant; her books and toys laid up as souvenirs, but her place in Paradise she fills most joyfully. She will be found waiting by the river s brink anxiously looking, dear parents, for you to come to join ....[rest of newspaper cut off].

Morris, James R. Morris

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated December 28, 1899

The death of Hon. James R. Morris, which occurred at his residence on Main street Sunday morning removes from our midst an aged and widely known citizen. The deceased was a native of Pennsylvania, and was born at Rodgersville in Green county, January 10, 1820. In 1829 Mr. Morris came with his parents to Monroe county and settled on a farm near Antioch. IN March 1831 he came to Woodsfield and has been a continuous citizen of this place. In 1844 he began the publication of The Spirit of Democracy and remained its successful editor for many years. He was elected a member of the Ohio legislature in 1848 and a member of the state board of equalization in 1859. Mr. Morris served two terms as congressman, being a member of the 37th and 38th congresses. At the expiration of his term of office in congress he began the practice of law and continued in that profession until 1872 when he was elected probate judge of Monroe county, serving for two full terms and also filling an unexpired term. On January 1, 1886, he took charge of the Woodsfield postoffice and held that position until July 1, 1889

On the 18th of March, 1845, Judge Morris married Mary R., daughter of Jeremiah and Mary (Ewart) Williams, of Tyler county, Va. (Now Wetzel county, W.Va.) Mrs. Morris died on the 4th of September, 1856. She was the mother of six children, but two of whom survive Mrs. Charles T. Okey of Adams county, Iowa and Mrs. Robert W. Pope of Woodsfield.

On the 8th day of September, 1858 Temperance N., daughter of Peter and Rachel Witten, of this county, became the wife of Judge Morris. To this union one son was born, Joseph Morris who with his mother, lives to see the last sad rights performed over the remains of a kind husband and indulgent father.

Mr. Morris was an active man and possessed from early youth a bright mind. He was a man to whom any person could go for a favor or advice and would never be turned away. During his life n Woodsfield he has been a substantial aid in many ways in the improvement of our town. He was always found on the conservative side of all public questions and ever ready to do what he believed to be to the best interests of the majority.

The funeral services took place Tuesday under the auspices of the Masonic order, Rev. J. W. Wier and Rev. B. H. Rankin being the officiating ministers. The remains were interred in the family cemetery near Woodsfield.

Thus has passed from our midst one of our citizens who had almost reached his 80th mile stone. A citizen who was honored and respected and one who, despite all his human frailties, set many good examples and gave many lessons of good advice.

Morris, James R. Morris

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 4, 1900

Resolutions of Monroe Lodge No. 189, F. & A. M., on the Death of James R. Morris

Death with his keen sickle has again invaded our Mystic Order and cut down our worthy and believed Brother James R. Morris, who was born January 10, 1820 and died December 24, 1899, aged 79 years, 11 months and 14 days. He lived to attain a good old age, almost four score years, the age which he at times expressed a desire to attain.

Brother Morris was made a Master Mason in Monroe Lodge No. 189 F. & A. M. About the year 1856. (The exact date cannot be ascertained because the records of the Lodge were burned at the time of the burning of the Court House in June, 1867). He was a member of Woodsfield Chapter No. 85, R.A.M., from 1866, until the surrender of its Charter in April 1891; and served many years as secretary in both Lodge and Chapter, where he was always at his post unless prevented by sickness or some other unavoidable cause.

In the death of Brother Morris the Masonic Fraternity has lost one of its most valued patrons; his wife an affectionate and devoted husband and his children a kind and indulgent parent; the community an honest, upright and most exemplary citizen, whose moral worth can scarcely be estimated and whose place can hardly be filled.

It may be truthfully said of him: Well done good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.

Resolved, that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Lodge, and a copy thereof under the seal of the Lodge, be furnished the family of the deceased, and that copies be furnished to each of the county papers for publication.

J.P. Spriggs, C. H. Moffett, D.E. Yost, Committee December 26, 1899

A Sad Death

Harvey G. Smith is Dead

Tuesday night occurred the death of Harvey G. Smith, proprietor of the New Columbia Hotel. Mr. Smith was taken ill with appendicitis Wednesday of last week and gradually grew worse until Tuesday night when death came to his relief.

During his sickness everything was done that was possible to do in order to conquer the disease, but all human efforts failed. Dr. Hupp, a specialist from Wheeling, was called Monday and after an examination of the patient and a consultation with the physicians of Woodsfield, it was decided that an operation was unnecessary. On Tuesday it was discovered that the disease was making rapid inroads and in the evening a special train was sent to Bellaire which brought Dr. Hupp and Dr. Ryder to Woodsfield. The run was made in a remarkably short space of time but when the physicians arrived it was too late. The operation was not performed. Our friend and brother was compelled to yield to the power of the disease and all that immortal passed from its earthly tabernacle to the God who gave it.

Mr. Smith was born near Woodsfield November 27, 1856, and was in his 43d year. He grew to manhood here. In 1881 he went to Columbus where he resided several years. In 1891 he was married to Miss Laura Dodd, daughter of Mrs. Matilda Dodd of Columbus. In 1897 he leaved the New Columbia Hotel and has been in charge ever since.

Mr. Smith was one of the noblest works of God he was a gentle manly man; a man full of manly zeal in every walk, deed and thought; he possessed a character that look up, lifted up; a character that did not note the quality of the garb in discriminating friend-ship. Of him every other man was compelled to say: There goes a manly man.

Mr. Smith leaves a dutiful and loving wife whose grief because of his departure is indescribable. For many years they have happily lived together, always kind to each other and willing to bear each others burdens. During his last sickness she was scarcely absent from his bedside for a moment, only when absolute necessity required it. She has the genuine sympathy and respect of everyone.

The immediate relatives who reside elsewhere are: Misses Loretta and Lorena Smith and Messrs. Charles, Thomas, Elmer and M. D. Smith, who reside at Springfield, Mo., and John, who resides in Texas.

After brief and appropriate services by Rev. W. Brucker the grief-stricken wife, accompanied by T. B. Rouse, left with the remains on the noon train for Springfield, Mo., where they will be interred by the side of his parents who preceded him to the better world several years ago. Mrs. W. C. Mooney, Mrs. Thurman Spriggs, Mrs. James G. Rouse, Mrs. T. B. Rouse, Miss Etta Brock and Mr. J. K. Buchanan accompanied Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Rouse as far as Bellaire.

Suppes, Mary Jane Suppes

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated October 12, 1899

Early Wednesday morning September 27, 1899 occurred the sudden and unexpected death of Mary Jane Wiley Suppes, aged 68 years, wife of George Suppes, at her home in Cameron. Mrs. Suppes was born in Belmont county. For fifty years she has been resident of Monroe county. On January 1, 1852, she was married to George Suppes. To this union was born eight children, four of whom are still living: Theodore, who resides at Kankakee, Ills., and Mrs. I. K. Hall, John and Charles who reside at Cameron. Sadness was added to sadness in this case because of Mr. Suppes s absence at the time the death occurred.

Mrs. Suppes was a member of the M.E. church. The funeral took place Friday interment in the Cameron cemetery. Rev. Wilson of Clarington conducted the services. A father and four children are marching over the same ground that has been trodden by hundred and thousands of others trying to reconcile their hearts and minds to the loss of a dutiful wife and a living mother, to feel that it is best that she be removed from them. Those of us and only those of us who have passed through the same ordeal can rightfully sympathize with them. Mrs. Suppes enjoyed the respect and esteem of many friends and acquaintances during her life time. She was a christian woman, a good neighbor and an affectionate wife and a venerable mother. May she rest in peace and may the comforting influence of Him who doeth all things well be with those who sorrow because death has taken the gentle spirit of Mary Jane Suppes from among us.

Todd, James Todd

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated August 24, 1899

(Stafford) James Todd, a respected farmer of Midmore Ridge, died Sunday and the remains were taken through here Monday to be in interred in the Tabor cemetery. We have no particulars of his death, but is was especially sad following so soon after the death of his young wife, who it will be remembered died as a result from fright last fall. The husband was away from home looking in a location when rowdies prowled around the house so terrorizing the woman that she died. It seems the husband never fully recovered and now a family of small children, and two sons by a former wife, are left orphans in the saddest sense.

Utsinger, Theodore (Obit 2) Utsinger

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated July 13, 1899

(Stafford) Our people were terribly shocked last Monday to learn of the horrible and untimely death of Theodore Utsinger whose home was near here. He was a carpenter and had just reached and commenced work on a barn near Carlisle when the timber on which he was standing broke precipitating him a distance of eighteen feet. He struck his head foremost and received many injuries any of which would have been fatal. When his family received the shocking news the harness had not yet been removed from the horses which had taken him to work. His wife and daughter immediately started to him but he died before they reached him. It was found impossible to bring the body home, so it was interred in the Catholic cemetery at Wills Creek. Mr. Utsinger had worked for several of our citizens and was highly respected as a good workman, industrious and honest, and in his family a kind husband and loving father. The family is prostrated, and has the kindest sympathy of the community.

Walter, Frederick Walter [Source: The Spirit of Democracy Issue:  Woodsfield, Ohio, January 19, 1899]

We are called upon to chronicle the death of our most beloved citizen, Frederick Walter, who died from pneumonia January 10, 1899, 38 years, 10 months, and 1 day of age. He was born March 9, 1860, and was married to Mrs. Louise Hoffmeister, nee Hoff on April 14, 1895, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life until the day of his death.

Mr. Walter was one of the most earnest, active and popular residents of this community. He quietly fell into the sleep that knows no waking at this home at this place Tuesday morning. He had been in poor health for only a few days.

He was a faithful and consistent member of the German Evangelical Church, having been confirmed in that faith in the year 1874.

The family circle consisted of seven. Five young faces, three of which, Bessie Hoffmeister, Louisa Hoffmeister and Lena Hoffmeister, were the children of Mrs. Louisa Hoffmeister, the widowed wife of Herman Hoffmeister of Monroefield, Ohio, who consented only four short years ago to be a truthful and upright partner for Mr. Walter through life. These children received the same fatherly care as though they had been his own. He has left his own two children, Nellie Walter and Lillie Walter, both bright and intelligent little children. He also leaves two sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss.

His pastor, the Reverend Gretzler, conducted the funeral services from the home. A large concourse of friends were present at the last sad rites. His burial was made in the German Evangelical cemetery.

Walter, Fred Walter

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 19, 1899

(Miltonsburg) On January 11, so timely in the new year, the Omnipotent Ruler of all things deemed it wise to call from our midst one of our most prosperous and influential citizens, Fred Walter. The loss was a terrible shock to our community and to the bereaved family a would of the deepest affliction. The grieved ones have the condolence and sympathy of their entire acquaintance. The deceased s first symptoms of illness was a severe cold which he thought he could soon master. After battling with it for several weeks it developed into typhoid-pneumonia which proved fatal in five days, notwithstanding the efficient medical aid and tender care of proficient nurses. He resigned to death, the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns, at a premature age of 38 years, 10 months and 9 days, leaving a wife and five children.

Walter, Frederick Walter (obit 3)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 19, 1899

Death, the grim monster, has once more visited our hamlet and taken from our midst our worthy and respected townsman, Fred Walter, proving to us that Life is like a fleeting shadow and it seems so quickly past. The subject of this notice was born March 9, 1860, and was married to Mrs. Louisa Hoffmeister April 14, 1895, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life until the date of his death January 10, 1899. His pastor Rev. Gretzler conducted the funeral services from the home. A large concourse of friends were present at the last sad rites. Mr. Walter was a faithful and consistent member of the German Evangelical church, having been confirmed in that faith in the year 1874. He was a faithful husband, a kind and loving father, a true friend and an enterprising citizen, who was active in the support of good schools and an earnest advocate of the higher education of our citizenship. He leaves a wife, five little girls, two sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss. Yet, weary hearts, you have only to wait a little longer. If you could be permitted to ask our departed friend, How is it with you, my brother? you would hear wafted back from the shores of eternity. I am resting in the shade of the trees and plucking the flowers along the pathway of the beautiful Hills of the Blest.

Walter, Frederick Walter (Obit 2)

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated January 19, 1899

We are called upon to chronicle the death of our most beloved citizen, Frederick Walter, who died from pneumonia January 10 in the 38th year of his age. Mr. Walter was one of the most earnest, active and popular residents of this community. He quietly fell into the sleep that knows no waking at his home at this place Tuesday morning. He had been in poor health for only a few days. He struggled bravely against the ravages of death. He was a gentleman in the highest sense of the term and was loved with a tender and warm affection by all. A few short months ago his cheeks bloomed with the roses of perfect life. One who saw him then, in all his youthful buoyancy, would have thought he had a long life of prosperity and happiness before him; but the grim monster Death laid his hold upon him and blighted his young life as the frost blights the tender plant. Everything had been done for him that could be done by loving wife and children, but the master called him to the world where there was no more sickness nor death, sorrow nor pain. The family circle consisted of seven, five young faces three of which, Bessie, Louisa and Lena, were the children of Mrs. Louisa Hoffmeister, the widowed wife of Herman Hoffmeister of Monroefield, who consented only four short years ago to be a truthful and upright partner for Mr. Walter through life.. These children received the same fatherly care as though they had been his own. He has left his own two children, Nellie and Lillie, both bright and intelligent little children. How hard it is to think that their papa has bid them farewell forever. The other three children will ever remember their kind and loving father. Mr. Walter was a christian gentleman and united with the German Evangelical church some twenty years ago. He was always ready to assist us in our wants and needs and the scholars and teachers will ever remember him with love. The bereaved and stricken family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Peace be to him, and may his memory ever be enshrined in the hearts of the members of the community of Miltonsburg. L.S. and L.H.

Young, Freda A. Young

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated March 16, 1899

Death loves a shining mark and never fails to find it. Freda A. Young, only child of Howard Young and Maggie Young, was born August 7, 1898 and died at the home of the grandfather Jacob McVay February 28, 1899. She was one of those sweet charming innocents whose mission on earth was wrought unconsciously to the actor. As the eagle soars above the storm so Freda gambols in the Paradise of God. She came into the home to cheer the father and mother fro a brief time, then went up to dwell among the angels where there is rejoicing over every one born into the kingdom of God. Will her pure spirit be thoughtful of father and mother while they dwell in the flesh or will she there know that once she was on earth?

What we know not now we shall know hereafter. God has taken Freda into that house not made with hands. Let us remember there are many mansions in that house, and they are not all for sweet infants, but some are for fathers and mothers. As the child waits to welcome parents coming to the home will she not so wait to welcome to the eternal home.

Zipf, William Zipf

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio dated March 23, 1899

Gone to Rest

William Zipf died at the home of his mother, Mrs. William Karcher in New Matamoras, Sunday evening, March, 1899. He was born on the 27th of August, 1872, and was therefore in the 27th year of his age. He was unmarried. His death resulted from diseased lungs which was occasioned by a severe attack of measles some six years ago. Most of his life was spent at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Zipf, whose love for him as a babe, boy and man, knows no limit. His love for her was equally as strong, pure and beautiful. When the angel of death hovered over him he was conscious that the loved grandmother was not present with him, although she and other kindred were expected each moment. He said to his loving and almost heart-broken mother: I hope God will let me live until she comes. A short time after he clasped his hand together and said: Has she come, and soon after his spirit took its flight to that home in heaven, where the weary are at rest. The loving grandmother and other relatives did not arrive until death had claimed their loved one. The funeral services were held at the home of William Karcher, Tuesday, by Rev. W. W. Dixon of the Baptist church. The remains were interred in the Matamoras cemetery. A large number of relatives and friends of this and other towns and different parts of the country were present to give testimony of their love and respect for the loved son and brother and esteemed friend. At the age of fourteen years the deceased was confirmed as a member of the German Lutheran church. He continued to be a member until his death. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
