Bracy, Sister Clarissa Bracy

Published in the Spirit of Democracy Woodsfield OH June 28, 1887

Oh, how sad it is when Death's dark angel invades our home circle, and calls a loved one from earth's sorrows, away to roam in "the sweet fields of Eden." Who can fathom the depth of sorrow which is felt in the home when the dear wife and mother is the one who is taken? This desolation has fallen on the house of Brother John Bracy, whose wife Sister Clarissa Bracy, died on the 8th of June, leaving seven loving children, a heart broken husband and father, with many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Sister Bracy was a daughter of William McMahon, who moved to Monroe County from Pennsylvania in 1815 or '16 and settled on the Ohio River, just above the town of Clarington. Here sister Bracy was born on the 14th of June, 1820, which makes here 66 years, 11 months and 28 days old, lacking two days of being 67 years old.

Sister Bracy was married to Bro. John Bracy in the year 1838. By this marriage she was the mother of fifteen children, eight of whom have gone before.

Sister Bracy was laid to rest in the Zion Cemetery June 15th, there to await the last roll call, when all who live aright will be present to meet her and live together in climes of eternal happiness.

Sister Clarissa obeyed the gospel in 1838 by being born in the Kingdom of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and uniting herself with the Christian Church. She lived the christian life until her death, and has gone to enjoy the reward promised to the faithful. Weep not dear husband and children as those who have no hope. Live the christian life so that at the end of the race you may meet mother on the other shore.

One by one and we cross the river

One by one we're passing o'er

One by one the crowns are given

On the bright and happy shore

Elder B.S. Bennett

He partially recovered for a few weeks, but was soon taken down again, and remained so until July, 188_ *, when he went to Eurka [sic--Eureka] Springs, Arkansas. That seemed to help him, but he had not means to stay a long time. He returned in the fall and was soon down again and has since been treated by various physicians without relief. His suffering was constant and intense.

Steadfast 'gainst the wiles of sin

Kind and true as thou hast been

Fading, falling day by day.

And in silence heaven is calling

Feisley, Robert Feisley

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, OH May 10, 1887

On last Tuesday evening, a trajedy of a serious nature occurred in SwitzerlandTownship, this County, which resulted in ending the life of Robert Fiesley, a young married man, and resident of that Township. The particulars as know are as follows:

At about 5 o'clock in the evening Feisley left home and taking a gun with him, disappeared into the woods which were only a short distance from the house. Nor returning in a reasonable time, and becoming alarmed at his prolonged absence, a search was instituted and he was found with a bullet in his brain. The ball had entered the forehead, and with such force as to scatter his brains for some distance and in a most sickening manner to see. We failed to learn where Mr. Feisley was originally from, but at any rate he moved into that neighborhood about a year ago and was in the employ of a widow lady named Smaltz. According to his own representations he was, at that time, unmarried, and only a short time since became the husband of Mrs. Smaltz. It was then rumored that he was sailing under false colors, and had a wife and family living in the West. Whether there is any truth in this report is still unknown, as he was generally silent on the history of his past, and dropped no remarks that would even form the basis of a conjecture of the truth. Onthe Sunday preceding the fatal Tuesday he went to Clarington in the company of a German minister, and while there attended the funeral of a friend. He evidently heard news of a discouraging nature, for after returning home he seemed much depressed in spirits, and no doubt concluded to seek oblivion in self-destruction. The coroners inquest may have brought important facts to light, but we are not yet advised as to the results of the investigation. It is to be hoped that his death was accidental and not intentional. The remains were interred at the cemetery of the German Church on Wednesday at 2 o'clock p.m.

Died - April 7th, 1887, at the residence of her father, in Fairfield, Illinois, Mrs. Jennie Harper, wife of Gideon Harper and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Ayres, aged 33 years, 11 months and 7 days. Nearly twenty years ago, at the age of fourteen years, she became a member of the Christian Church, being baptised by Elder Chowding at or near Pleasant Grove, three miles northwest of Jeffersonville, and taking her membership with the Pleasant Grove congregation. She was united in marriage to Gideon Harper, her now bereaved husband on the 22nd of June, 1871, at Jeffersonville, Indiana. To them were given five boys and one girl - one of the boys dying in infancy. For fourteen months she was a patient sufferer. All this time not a murmur ever escaped her lips, but she ever trusted in the merits of her Savior. She was ever faithful to her God, to his church, to His service, to her friends, - "faithful unto death" faithful through all the long weary months of her affliction, till the ever sure destroyer, phthisis pulmonalia, prayed upon her vitals, until her body was wasted away and destroyed to such an extent that her spirit would not abide in it longer, but took its flight to a fairer land than this, to await the great judgement day, when she will receive a spiritual body, one that disese will not waste away nor destroy, but one that will remain through the ceaseless ages of etermity. May the memory of her patience in affliction, her fidelity and devotion to her Savior and His cause inspire those who mourn her departure to so live that, when they are called to cross over the dark, chilly waters of the river of death, which she neither dreaded nor feared, they may be a reunited family in that "Far away home of the soul" JPW

At Summerfield, Noble Co., O.

On Wednesday last week a young man by the name of Elmer Height who has been among relatives near Summerfield for several weeks. Purchased of a druggist of that place among other things, some morphine, saying he was troubled with Rheumatism and desired to use it externally for that trouble.

On the next morning Wm Farley who teaches school about two miles north-west of Summerfield on a small stream known as Glady, approached the school-house, and, within a short distance of the building was surprised to hear groans issuing therefrom. On opening the door and entering the room he saw the form of a man lying on the floor and supposing him to be some tramp who had selected that as a place to sleep, proceeded to attend to his usual morning duties ad hoping thereby to arouse him. The prostate form however, paid no heed to the noise, and after waiting a reasonable length of time, the teacher approached, but was horrified to learn that shaking and addressing him failed to elicit any response. He then sent to a farm house and summoned aid, and the unconsious man was removed thither. Medical aid was immediately summoned, but all efforts failed to bring a return to consciousness and at twelve o'clock the cessation of the heart beats accounced that life was extinct.

It is known that the young man was in trouble, and had left his home in Missouri on account of it. He left the following letter.

Summerfield, O. Feb 3, 1887

Dear Uncle, Peter R Danford, Sumpter Danford and Grandpa Danford.

I am tired of life and am ready to shuffle off. If I don't see any of you on earth meet me in Heaven, as I am tired of life. I want you to send my body home to MO. I have meditated over the rash act I am about to take and think it for the best. Don't fail to send my body home.

With love to all, yours

A Tribute to the Memory of a Friend

In the death of Mrs. Ione Henry, nee O'Connor, society has lost one of it's brightest ornaments, the Church and Sunday school one of its most useful members, and the family a devoted and affectionate mother, daughter and sister. Mrs. Henry was a true friend in all thatthe words imply - ever ready to do a kindness and speak words of comfort and cheer.

Only a short time prior to her death, Mrs. Henry went to Canal Winchester to visit a sick friend. A few days after her arrival she was taken ill, but recovered sufficiently to be able to visit other friends in Lancaster. There her illness assumed an aggravated form, and in less than a week after she went to Lancaster, her Spirit took its flight to Him who gave it.

Mrs. Juliet Stoner of Tiffin was summoned by telegraph, and hastened to the bedside of her sister, and was able to contribute some little to the comfort of the suffering one. All the kind friends could do was most willingly done, and the most skillful physicians employed, but she was beyond all human aid, and on Tuesday morning , May 3d, death ensued, and the same day Mrs. Stoner started her sad journey home, bringing the remains of her sister, to be laid beside other loved ones in Maple Grove Cemetery. Mrs. O'Connor , (mother of the deceased), who was visiting in Wheeling, unfortuately did not reach Lancaster, but met the body or her daughter at Columbus and came on to Tiffin with Mrs. Stoner.

The funeral services were most impressive, and were conducted by Rev. Dr. Kefauver, of the First Reformed Church, assisted by Rev. Dr. Williard and Rev. J.H.W. Blake.

Mrs. Henry left but one child, a bright little boy of twelve years, whom she entrusted to the care of her sister Mrs. Stoner.

To the sorrowing ones, the writer can only say: "Not my will, oh God, but Thine be done" - DVM in Tiffin

Mrs. Henry was born and raised in Clarington, this County, was the daughter of the esteemed and well-known Dr. D. J. O'Connor. Many friends here will regret to recieve the sad message of her unexpected death.

Death of John S. Holliday

Died - Monday August 29, at his residence in Woodsfield, John S Holliday aged 68 years, 8 months and 17 days

The death that the foregoing lines announce, while a severe blow to his many friends and relatives, was not entirely unexpected, as for some years, Mr. Holliday had been in frail health. He was born at Morristown, Belmont county, Ohio, in 1818, and at the age of 13 left to clerk in a store at Birmingham, Ohio, where he remained until he attained the years of manhood. After leaving Birmingham he located at Carlisle, Noble County (then Monroe County) where he engaged in the mercantile business until 1842, when he married and returned to Birmingham. In 1850 he returned to Woodsfield, where he served as Deputy Treasurer, Deptuty Clerk of Courts, and Deputy Sheriff. In 1854 he was elected County Auditor and re-elected in 1856. In these various positions, he was faithful and true to the peoples' interest, and efficient in the discharge of his official duties. At the expiration of his term as Auditor, which position he filled until 1863. In that year he removed to New Castle, this County, and there re-engaged in the mercantile business until 1879 when he returned to Woodsfield, where he resided until the time of his death. For nearly half a century Mr. Holliday had been a citizen of Monroe County, and in that time witnessed many changes in its history. His position as a prominent citizen gave him ample opportunities of understanding the different phases of its growth. He was respected as a man of pure and noble purposes, and athe successes of his life are strong arguments in favor of Honesty being the best policy. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church - not only at the time of his death - but for many years thoughout his life. The Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. W H Day, of the Presbyterian Church of this place, at 4 o'clock p.m., on last Tuesday.

The remains were interred at the Woodsfield Cemetery.

The subject of this sketch of Jesse Everett, little son of William J Miracle and wife, of Quarry, Ohio, who died on December, 1887, after an illness of a short time.

His remained were interred in the cemetery at Hopewell Church on the 31st.

A large concourse of people gathered to witness the last sad rights of little Jesse. The gathering all deeply sympathizes with the bereaved friends, as they stood beside the grave of their son and brother, and as the coffin was lowered in the grave, little Jesse Everett's soul was safely housed in Heaven, singing with the angels.

Look up bereaved ones to God, who is able to comfort the broken hearted, and to heal all our sorrows. He is the friend that sticketh closer than a brother, and as little Jesse has gone, it is only one more dear friend that has past over the dark river, and is waiting for his father, mother, sister and brother on the other side.

Moore, Samuel M Moore

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield Monroe County, Feb 8, 1887

It is with feelings of the deepest sorrow that I record the death of Samuel M Moore. The deceased who was born near Jerusalem, Monroe County, Ohio. was in his 22d year and was a member of the M.E. church. Some 24 months ago, when in the splendid prime of manhood, that much dreaded disease, consumption, crossed the horizon of his life. The best medical aid that could be procured was found. The physician saw too well the work of the destroyer, but cherished the hope that if he would go to the fine climate of Colorado, he would have a partial restoration to health. But, alas! a country whose spring brings life to all nature, brought no life or hope to him. The clouds grew dark ad darker, and in the ascent of the hill of life, he fainted and fell, and on January 12, 1887 the conflict was over. The approach of death had no terrors for him - no cloud overhung his future. He met the end with composure, and his pathway to the grave was brightened by the immortal hopes which spring from the Christian's faith.

Sammy, as he was called, was a young man of promise, ambition, and of an ardent and impetuous temperament. he was persevering and firm of purpose. He was charitable, honorable and patient, bearing his afflictions without a murmur or complaint.

The deceased leaves an only brother and three sisters, and a large circle of friends to mourn his premature death. His father and mother crossed the chilly river of death years ago.

His remains were followed to the cemetery at Woodsfield, by relatives and friends, and they committed earth to earth and dust to dust, but with the blessed conviction of the truth of that divine revelation which teaches us that there is life and hope beyond the silent tomb. EJG

Mrs Ann V. Morrill was born in Franklin County, Tenn., March, 1825. While she was quite young her father (Hardin S Adams) moved to Harden County of the same state, and then to Memphis, where she was married to Jno. C. Morrill in 1844. They settled in Holly Springs, Miss., where they remained until 1854, at which time they moved to Des Arc, Ark. Sister Morrill was the mother of seven children, three of which died when they were young. She is now with those and other dear ones that have preceded her to the sun bright clime, where sickness and sorrow never come. The other four are left behind with many friends and relatives to mourn her absence and tarry a little longer amid the conflicts of this misty lower land. I heard this expression at her grave. "She was a good woman." She had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South for many years in Des Arc, Ark. She was a great sufferer for two or three years before her death. And she became so feeble that she left the old home and went to live with her son in Batesville, Ark., last summer. Before she left us I visited her frequently and her conversatio was mainly about the Bible, religion and the church of God. May the Savior of the good name she has left behind bind her children closer to their mother's God.

She was a great sufferer from childhood with the dreadful disease known as Asthma, yet she bore all her affliction with unparallelled patience and Christian fortitiude. She was a member of the M E Church from her youth, and showed "by her daily walk and conversation that she had been with Jesus and learned of him." Although we sadly miss her, and feel her loss deeply, in our disconsolate home, yet we are resigned knowing that our temporary loss is her eternal gain, that shis is released from sorrow and suffering, that she is gone to enjoy that rest that remaineth to the people of God, that she now breathes easily and freely the pure air of Heaven, that she again enjoys the company of that dear sister, from whom she was never separated but for one long sad year, - finally that she now enjoys the presence of the Savior in whom she so constantly trusted. May the God of all grace sustain us, and enable us to meet her in the realms of bliss above. SPL

Pearson, Mary A Pearson

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio December 6, 1887

Mary A Pearson (nee Jackson) was born September 6, 1825, at Centerville, Belmont county, Ohio, and died at Beallsville, Ohio, November 29, 1887

She died of that much to be dreaded fell destroyer, consumption. Mother Pearson was married November 20, 1844 to her surviving husband William L Pearson, with whom she moved to Beallsville January 3, 1855, where she continued to reside until her death. Her remains were interred in the M E graveyard in Beallsville. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W Darby, assisted by Rev. John Jeffers.

Mother Pearson leaves nine children, four sons and five daughter, all of whom are grown to man and womanhood, most of whom are engaged in battle of life for themselves; and, together with the husband and companion of her youth, mourn the irreparable loss which the ruthless hand of death made in their home circle. Mother Pearson was the oldest child of a family of twelve children, nine of whom have preceded her to the bourne from which no traveler e'er returns. She was happily converted to God and united with the M E Church 35 years prior to her death. Her influence over her children seemed to be unlimited , while the regard which her children had for her was illimitable(?). Her devotion to God as well as to her husband and children was truly unbounded, she being one of the most unselfish and self- sacrificing Christian women we have ever known. She died as she had lived, forceful, emphatic, definite and wholly trusting in Christ; with clearest consciousness of present and full salvation and with profound confidence in Christ as her Savior, this good woman awaited the summons which called her to the presence of her glorified Lord. The poet has well said;

"Jesus, thy blood and righteousness

My beauty are, my glorious dress."

Her religion shone out in her every daylife, but with particular luster in the hours of trouble and disappointment, while health permitted she was always found at her place in the house of public worship, a noble example to the survivors of her family. She died as she had lived, with heaven in full view. May each of her children, together with her aged husband, be so unspeakably happy, as to meet wife and mother in that heavenly home to which she has already gone. A Friend.

STABBED IN THE NECK

Concerned it a Cutting Affair

No news spreads so rapidly as news of a sinister nature. The town is so excited over the grave affair which occurred at Horne's Gallery on Saturday afternoon last, between one of our most prominent citizens, M. W. Horn, the photographer, and Mr. Hy Price, somewhat known around town. Mr Horn skipped out for Coshocton county, and the affair is now in everybodys mouth. It has been a matter of general knowledge and discussion for some time past that Mr. Horn has borne feelings of the gravest animosity toward Mr. Price, and it has been predicted that the feeling would lead to serious results. Mr. Hy Price has, for a long time, been an annoying loafer in many of our places of business and on Saturday afternoon he sauntered into Horn's place of business. A short but sanquinary contest ensued and we are pleased to report Mr. Horn the victor. Every one familiar with the facts fully justifies his conduct in first stabbing Hy Price in the neck and afterward ripping him up the back. Hy Price is dead. Mr. Horn, his slayer, will receive the congratulations of his friends in Woodsfield all summer (and make cabinets at bottom figures)

Sawyers, Clara A Sawyers

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio November 22, 1887

Died - On Irish Ridge, Sabbath evening, November 6th, 1887, after a few days sickness with diptheria, little Clara A Sawyers, aged 5 years, 8 months and 12 days.

She was buried Monday evening in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. W H Day, of the Presbyterian Church assisted Rev. Rutledge, of the M E Church. She was the youngest of ten children of William and Agnes Sawyers, members of the New Castle Presbyterian Church. She was a bright little girl, much loved by the family and people of the community. Although so young she, like the older members of the family was regular in her place in the Sabbath School and church service, and strange as it may seem she knew more of the catechism of the chuch than many of our people who are past the meridian of life. To the family, chuch and community, she will be greatly missed. But God being a Father of Love and All Wise, we are resigned to his will. These visitations are simply this Father's love manifested in a way we cannot at the present comprehend. Still this we do know, that God who gave her to us for a seasdon, for a good reason, called her to himself.

.

Little Clara has passed from earth away;

No more she'll know of grief or care;

The summons came, she could not stay,

And those she left behind should not despair

.

She lives again in light and love,

She's free from grief and pain;

She passed from earth to Christ above

To heaven with him to reign.

Smith, Georgie Smith

Published in the Spirit of Democracy August 30, 1887

Died - George Lloyd Smith Aged nine years

It is with deepest regrets, and with a sorrow felt alike by the entire community, that we chronicle the death of Georgie, little son of William Smith, Jr. of this place. Death is always sad and the wisdom of it hard to understand; and especially at the crushing out of so young and innocent a life. It is no surprise when the aged and middle-aged pass away; or when nature becomes exhausted by the rigors of the sick bed, and the youthful spirit returns to its Maker, but when called away withour a moments warning, it is especially hard to bear. But consolation whispers that after all, "God in his infinite wisdom and mercy knows best." Georgie had gone after the cows, and the horse he was riding, in a playful mood, made a sudden spring throwing him high in the air, and he fell, striking his head with such force that the skull was fractured.

All that the loving attention of parents and friends could suggest, as well as the skillful services of the family physician, was done but to no avail, and in a short time after compression of the brain set in, the sad intelligence was made known, that Georgie was dead. The funeral services took place at the family residence on Main Street on Tuesday, and were conducted by Rev. W H Day.

Kind friends furnished beautiful floral decorations from whose purity could be drawn a fitting comparison with the young and silent form beneath them, and which suggested beautiful lessons full of comfort and hope to the stricken parents and friends, who have the heartfelt sympathy of all in this sore bereavement.

Smith, Osta S. Smith

Smith, James S. Smith

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, OH June 21, 1887

Osta S Smith and James S Smith left us to join the angels on the other shore. Osta died May 30, in the 9th year of his age, and James, June 5, in his 4th year. The disease that plucked these buds of more than ordinary promise was scarlet fever. The blow falls with unusual severity upon the bereaved parents and little brothers and sisters, but they have the promise of the blessed Jesus wehre he said, "I take these little lambs and lay them in my breast. Protection they shall find in me, in me be ever blest." May the Lord satisfy this mysterious providence to the good of the friends.

On the 6th inst., little Jimmie was followed by a large procession of friends and neighbors to the Bracken Cemetery, where Rev. Geo. Wilson, of the M. E. Church, conducted the funeral services, and addressed the audience from Mark X, 14-16, as a last tribute to the little brothers who had joined each other beyond.

Stage, Henry Stage

Published in the Spirit of Democracy Woodsfield OH January 17, 1887

The death of Henry Stage occurred at the Albert House last Friday. Some two weeks previously he came from his home in Barnesville on business, apparently in his usual health, and just as he was leaving town was stricken with paralysis one side being entirely paralyzed. - He was taken to the Albert House, where he received the best medical aid, and good nursing from his family and other friends. He. however, continued to decline and died on Friday. He was about seventy years of age and had always been recognised as a conscientious man. Nearly the whole of his three score and ten years were spent in the neighborhood of Fairview and he had many friends in this vicinity. He was one of the fathers among the Masonic Fraternity and was made a member of that order nearly forty years ago. A large number of the members of Friendship Lodge of this place accompanied the remains from the Albert House on Sunday morning. Interment was made in the cemetery at Fairview, The Masonic Lodge of that place taking charge of the services. - Barnesville Enterprise

Steward, George Grover Steward

Published in the Spirit of Democracy, October 18, 1887

Died - George Grover, little son of Dr. S L and Amanda Steward of Brownsville, Monroe County, Ohio, died of brain fever, Aug. 30th, 1887, aged 3 years, 1 month and 12 days. George was one of the brightest children we ever met, yet often do we see our dearest earthly joys taken from us. His father's hopes clustered round him as being his comfort in his declining years. Death has taken from you the idol of your home, but remember, "this beautiful flower, plucked from your breast, is but the budding of the ripening fruit which you may gather in the life beyond the grave."

No more his voice will greet you at the door; no more you'll bathe his feverish brow; yet weep not for Georgie, for Christ has said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

This precious blossom that you've tended with such care, has withered ad left a void in your heart that no earthly tie can fill, but could we hear the sound of his angelic voice, no doubt the notes which would fall on our ears would be

My body rests beneath the sod

My soul to God has risen

Then weep not for me, dear parents now

No more on earth I'll meet you,

But wen on earth your work is done

At heaven's gate I'll greet you

Published in the Spirit of Democracy September 13, 1887

Died - On Sunday, September 4th, 1887, at his residence near Cameron, Monroe County, Ohio, James Ward, aged 78 years, 2 months, and 19 days. The death that the foregoing lines announce, while a severe blow to his many friends and relatives, was not entirely unexpected. For some years Brother Ward had been in frail health. He was born in Belmont County, Ohio, June 16th 1887. (?) He united with the Christian Church over 50 years ago, and ever since has lived a consistent Christian life. His walk and conversation have been circumspect. He possessed the rare qualities of being slow to speak, slow to wrath, and speaking evil of no man. He was a good neighbor, a kind and indulgent husband and father. He leaves a wife and seven children (all married) with many relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was taken to the Church House Sept. the 5th at about 4 o'clock P.M. and after appropriate services was followed by a large concourse of relatives and sympathizing friends to his last resting place on earth: We would say to the bereaved weep not, but take fresh courage and press onward, for Heaven and immortal joys.
